Chapter One

“Psss, Hermione! Wake up!” Hermione stirred, but wasn’t able to wake up anymore than she had before when Harry had tried previous to the class starting. “Professor Lupin…”

“Is right next to you, so don’t bother to whisper, Mr. Potter,” Remus said, frowning as he looked down at her. He kneeled next to her. “Now what do we have here?" He pushed her hair out of her face. “Miss Granger?”

She tried to wake up, making an irritated humming noise at the light now reaching her face thanks to her curtain of hair not keeping it at bay. She turned her face the other way, trying as she might to lift herself up from the table.

“Hermione?” But she didn’t budge. “Has she been like this for long?” Remus asked of Harry.

“She said at breakfast she was exhausted, but she was able to make it through potions awake, but just barely.”

Severus Snape charged into the medical wing, half expecting it was some sort of lark that had him ordered to come in. But when he saw Minerva, Remus, and Poppy all looking disheartened he knew that they meant business when they claimed that it was an emergency.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“It’s Miss Granger,” Minerva said, twisting her hands together in such a way that they held a slight resemblance to a Celtic knot. “Something is terribly wrong with her.”

“What?” he asked, but when he didn’t get an answer he restrained himself from snapping at them. “You mean to say you don’t know what’s ‘gravely wrong’ with our resident know it all?”

“She can’t wake up,” Remus said serious tone that had Severus looking over to her on the bed. “She’s tried. I’ve seen it. Severus, sunlight hurts her.”

That had him rushing over to her side, checking her neck. When he saw that it was unmarred, he asked, “I assume you inspected the rest of her as well?”

“Yes,” Minerva answered. “Poppy did as soon as she heard the symptoms. She hasn’t a mark on her.”

“When was her birthday?” he asked.

“What does…?”

“Did it occur to any of you that this might have been her attaining her magical inharitance?”

Remus blushed even as Poppy stammered, “That’s not likely!”

“Why not?” Snape asked her. “Because she’s a muggle? She’s still magical thus has the same chances of inheriting as any other.” He looked over to Minerva. “I was a half blood and I inherited a trait that it was thought only pure bloods did, if you recall. So I don’t put much faith into what is or isn’t.”

Hermione’s hand moved in a flash, catching hold of Snape’s that was near her own. Her eyes opened slowly, looking over to him as he watched her to see what she would do next.

Taking a deep breath, she whispered, “Harry and Ron are coming. Tell them I’m fine.”

“Of course not. Anything else you wish for us to do while we’re at it?”

His dry sarcasm had her smiling to herself. “Sorry. Using all my energy to tell you this. Can’t be polite with so little…” And she was asleep again.

He moved her hand back over, carefully petting it as if to settle her down and assure her that he would be doing as she had asked of him.

No sooner had he done this that Harry and Ron charged in with Ginny on their heels. They got them out of the hospital room, telling them that she was in no shape for visitors. Minerva assured them that she would update them when things changed.

“How did she know that they were on their way over here?” Remus asked Severus, who shrugged.

“I don’t know. It’s the last thing I’m concerned about at the moment.” He looked over to the young woman in their charge. “What did she inherent and is she going to be a threat to the students as a result?”

Hermione awoke slowly, sighing heavily as she did so. Blinking she noticed that the sun didn’t hurt her eyes. This was a relief, she thought, as she sat up and looked around the room she was in. There were no other students with her, as it now appeared that she was in a room by herself. Swallowing thickly, she wondered what could have been so wrong with her as she had to be put into isolation.

Pulling her knees up to her chin, she thought over what it could be, but she could think of nothing. Sighing heavily she was about to get up when not only Poppy came into the room, but Professor Snape as well.

“Miss Granger, you’ve decided to rejoin the conscious,” Snape muttered, thinking about how inconvenient her timing was as he was just falling asleep as she did so. “Madam Pomfrey will need to give you a full examination.”

The mediwitch glared at the potions master, snapping, “You forgot to ask the most important question, sir.” She then looked over to the girl in front of them. “How do you feel, dear?”

“Fine,” she answered. “Better than I have in a time. Why?”

“That is a standard question, Miss Granger, given you’ve been asleep for three days straight,” Poppy told her gently.

“Oh.” Hermione swallowed thickly. “So that’s why I have to go to the bathroom so badly.”

The older woman showed her where the W.C. was and they waited. Hermione joined them after washing up, blurting out to Snape, “Pansy’s pregnant, but she doesn’t know who the father is. She hopes it’s Draco’s, but she has a bad feeling it’s Goyle’s.” She flushed after she finished. “Where did that come from?”

“That’s what I would like to know,” Snape muttered, but added, “When did you know this information and how do we know it’s the truth?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I suppose it was when I was taking care of business as it were.” She looked over to a blushing Poppy. “I need to get back to my classes…”

“That will have to wait, Miss Granger,” Snape told her. “You will be given the work assignment list come the morning, but for now, Merlin I can’t believe I’m even suggesting this, you need to get some more rest.” He held up his hand to stop her protesting. “Let me remind you, Miss Granger, that it is two forty in the morning. Even if I was inclined to give you the work load, it wouldn’t happen now as most of your professors have the good sense to be asleep.”

Hermione didn’t say anything as the two left, closing the door silently behind them.

“Poppy, a question,” Severus said as soon as they were out of the room. “Is Miss Parkinson pregnant?”

“Yes!” she whispered in an excited tone. “But how did Miss Granger find out?”

“I don’t know,” he answered. “But I plan on discovering how she did so.”
