What do I have to do?

A/N - The song this fic is based on is by Stabbing Westward (I love them)

“Potter… Harry…”

Harry Potter turned to find the person who had called his name. He had recognized the voice immediately. He nodded in acknowledgement and waited. His face was bare of emotion but his heart was racing.

Draco Malfoy took a few steps closer. “I… how are you?” he asked hesitantly, taking another step closer.

Harry didn’t move back as he usually did. He had decided long ago that he would not let Draco see the way he affected him.

“I’ve been better.” He said shortly. Draco took another few steps closer until he was almost touching Harry.

“I can’t breathe, Harry. I miss you so much it’s suffocating me. I can’t sleep, I can’t eat. I need you Harry. I need to feel you next to me.” Draco said in a soft voice.

Harry stared into his grey eyes for a moment in anguish, before turning away from him. The hall was dark and quiet but at this moment, Harry wished for anyone, even Filch to interrupt what he knew was going to be a painful confrontation.

“It doesn’t matter, Draco. You don’t matter.” He said harshly, knowing he didn’t mean the words.

He didn’t turn to face Draco to say them. He knew the look that would be on the blonde’s face, the look of a broken heart and he couldn’t bear to face it. It was enough to see it in class and in the halls when they were surrounded by students. He could pretend to be strong then, not to care but with them alone it would be impossible.

“Harry, I can’t bear to think that this is all nothing. It meant something. It did!”Draco said insistently. “I wish you could see inside me, Harry. I have never felt this way about anyone before. Tell me what I have to do to make you happy. What do I have to do to make you understand?” he reached out and put a hand on Harry’s shoulder.

“What do I have to do to make you want me, Harry? What do I have to do to make you love me?” he said in a small hurt voice.

Harry flinched and tears spilled down his cheeks. He didn’t know how much longer he could do this. He couldn’t tell the truth because he knew Draco. He knew Draco wouldn't understand what he had to do and why? He had gotten to know him so well over the last few months and every look, every hurt word from Draco broke his heart some more.

He started walking away from Draco. It was the only thing he could do and he tried to harden his heart against the soft sobs he heard coming from behind him. He heard footsteps following him.

“Harry! I know what you think. I won’t let you down this time. I’m not that selfish person anymore. I wasn’t proud of it. I’ll do anything, anything Harry! Please, I can’t lose you. I just want one more chance.” Draco called out brokenly from behind him. Harry broke out into a run and quickly lost the blonde.

When he was sure he was alone, he sank down to the floor and wrapped his arms around his legs and sobbed. It hurt him to hurt Draco, who he loved but it was for the best. He may be hurt now but at least he would be alive later. He wouldn’t be a target for Voldemort. He would be safe.

Soon his tears dried up and he made his way to the Gryffindor common room where Hermione and Ron were waiting. They had argued with his choice, even Ron, who still disliked Draco, had argued that what he was doing was wrong. But they had accepted that he wouldn’t change his mind and left him alone about it. Maybe things would change after the battle. They would have a chance to be happy again.

Harry walked through the garden path, a white and a red rose in his hand. As he walked the brick path, he felt his heart get heavier with every step and finally he reached it. A large stone dragon statue marked the spot of his only love’s grave. Harry lay the roses at the foot of the statue and read the inscription aloud.

“Draco Malfoy, aged seventeen, who died for what he believed in and the man he loved, Harry Potter. May he rest in peace for eternity.” His voice seemed loud in the silence of the garden. Harry stood still for a few moments before he fell to the ground sobbing. His last encounter with Draco still haunted him, Draco’s frantic words in that empty hallway.

“I love you Draco. I always have and I never stopped. You did make me happy and I did understand you. I did want you.” He cried brokenly. “I did love you and I always will. I’m sorry for what I did. I’m sorry I never got the chance to tell you the truth.”

Harry lay against Draco’s headstone sobbing as the sun set on the Malfoy Gardens.
