'Bout Time!
a/n-This is my first fanfic, so be nice. I hope you enjoy!
I never should have let it get this far! Why didn’t I say something sooner? Good going Ron. Now she’s with an international Quiditch player and there’s nothing you can do about it.
It was now the trio’s final year at Hogwarts, and Ron still thought about that fight he had with himself almost three years earlier. Until recently Hermione Granger had been dating the famous Bulgarian Bonbon, Victor Krum. Ron knew there was no way to compete with him, so he kept his mouth shut and decided to give Lavender Brown a go. He honestly didn’t like her much, but the snogging was a plus. Even Harry could tell that his two friends should be together. When the two of them were in a room together, you could cut through the tension with a dull butter knife. Harry had even on occasion heard Ron talking about Hermione in his sleep. You didn’t have to be a master at Occlumency to tell he was jealous of Krum. There were times that Harry wondered if he knew just how bad his friend had “it”.
Now that Hermione was head girl they knew they wouldn’t get to see her as much. Being Head Girl, she now shared a dormitory with the Head Boy, between that and studying, they would hardly ever get to see their friend. Harry prepared himself for Ron’s constant questions about where Hermione could be.
It was their first day back and Ron had already started in with questions. Harry had to hold back a chuckle from his obliviousness. Ron knew that now was the time to talk to Hermione. The two had just ended their long distance relationship. Krum and Hermione were still close, they even wrote regularly. The only problem Ron now faced, he was scared out of his mind. He was afraid she’d laugh in his face, afraid she’d run screaming, but mostly he was afraid of “I don’t want to hurt the friendship”. So now Harry was the only one out of the trio seeing someone. Even when Harry was with Ginny, he felt bad with any sign of public affection.
“Yes, this will do nicely.” Hermione was observing her new room. Her walls were covered in Gryffindor colors with a large shield on the wall with a picture of a lion on it. Her bed was a queen size with maroon colored sheets. She also had a wardrobe against the wall to put all of her things in. This room was bigger than her old one, but she certainly didn’t mind the extra room. She had enjoyed sharing a room with the other girls, but she preferred her privacy.
As she finished unpacking she wondered who the head boy would be. She had sent an owl to the headmaster, but she had refused to give her an answer. Her thoughts were interrupted by voices in the common room.
“That must be my new room mate.” She said, looking in the mirror one last time before stepping out to meet her new room mate.
“What?!” Harry and Ron yelled in unison.
“Draco Malfoy is Head Boy. I hate the idea as much as the two of you do. Why would Dumbledore make him head boy?” Hermione was still shocked that the blonde Slytherin was her room mate.
“Well, look at this way Hermione, his grades are the top in his house. And if you think about it, he is one of the best choices…Would you rather it was Crab? Or Goyle?”
“NO! I see what you mean. We’ll just have to have some ground rules. I will discuss them when we talk later.” Hermione nodded, giving one of her triumphant looks.
“So,” Harry said, breaking the silence, “What did he say when he found out he was with you?”
What did he say? Hermione thought back to when she stepped out of her room. The first thing she noticed was Draco standing in the room with his mother, looking around the room. Luckily, her room was on the other side of the room so they didn’t notice her. Draco ran his fingers through his hair, trying to find some sign as to who else was staying in the other room.
As if she were reading his thoughts his mother asked, “I wonder who the lucky girl is. I only hope she’s not a Mudblood.”
Hermione had no idea why she couldn’t move. She just watched as the two Malfoys walked around and let their house elf unpack. Soon after, they left the room leaving Hermione worried about how the year was going to go. She had never liked Draco, but like every girl at Hogwarts, she thought he was gorgeous. Quickly Hermione ran out of the dormitory to find her friends.
“Well, actually Harry… He doesn’t know yet.” Both boys looked at her astonished. “I saw him there with his mum, and I panicked!” Hermione looked nervously at Harry and Ron, worried what they might think.
“Yeah, that might have been best. Let him find out when there isn’t an audience. It might not be as bad.”
She thought this through, “You’re right.” Hermione paused, looking at Ron. “Ron, you’ve been quiet. What do you think?”
Great another guy that’s better than me. I’ve seen the way he looks at her. He likes her, a lot. She may not want to admit it, but she likes him too. Besides, he has everything that I can’t give her.
“Ron? Ron!” Ron was brought back from his thoughts by Hermione yelling at him. “So, what do you think?”
“Oh. Um, I agree with Harry, only time will tell.”
Harry and Hermione exchanged looks, noticing their friend was acting odd. Ron suddenly stood.
“I’ll see you guys around. I need to do something.” Then he walked through the portrait hole, not looking back at the confused looks on his friends faces.
“Well, I better get this over with…” She looked at Harry, thinking as usual. “Could you find Ron and see what’s wrong? He worries me when he acts like this. Please?”
“Sure.” Harry nodded, knowing exactly what was bothering his friend. “Come by later and let me know how it went.”
Twisting her fingers, Hermione slowly walked to the head dormitories not knowing what to say to Draco. Draco? Since when have I called him Draco? It has always been Malfoy. It’s not like we’re great chums or anything. He was always insulting her, calling her Mudblood.
Hermione sighed as she reached the portrait, mumbling the password. The door swung open, revealing the brightly lit dormitory. Climbing in she looked for Malfoy and spotted him in a black leather arm chair. Noticing the sound of the opening door, Draco stood and turned finding himself looking into the face of a nervous Hermione Granger. The Muggle-born he had secretly longed to touch.
