Hermione sat in her dark bedroom, the only light was from that of the streelight just down the road from her house. She had her knees drawn up to her chest and silent tears were streaming down her face. She sighed audibly and gingerly started moving down the bed, to get into a laying position. She laid there for a while, the tears still streaming, down the sides of her face and into her hair. Her last thought before unconcsiousness overtook her was "I don't want to face anybody at school."

*********************************

Morning dawned and Hermione was awake. She dared not leave her room until 10, when she would take a taxi to the train station alone, and aboard the Hogwarts express to go back to the one place that she was supposed to be happy. Luckily she was good at pretending by now.

She was to start her 7th year at Hogwarts.

She had been pretending since her 3rd.

****************************
At 9:30 she supposed it would be okay to go downstairs.

'Archie should be gone by now.'

She went down the stairs slowly and carefully, wincing if she stepped too hard. It would send a jolt through her entire body. She went as quietly as she could, and went into the kitchen. She poured herself a cup of coffee and made herself a peice of toast.

About 25 minutes later a little yellow taxi pulled in front of the house and Hermione struggled to get her trunk down the lawn. The driver came out and started to help her. He came up behind her, and touched her ever so slightly. She instantly stiffened.

'Relax' she told herself. 'He's just helping you'

The taxi driver chatted animatedley all the way to the train station.

Hermione barely replied. If she did it was either with a small "yes" or the nod of her head.

She paid the man, got out and got her trunk herself. 'Bitch' the taxi driver thought and sped away.

**************

Hermione slid through the barrier and quickly put up her mask. She spotted Harry and Ron and walked to them, a cheerful grin on her face.

"Hey Hermione" they said in unison and gave her a hug.

She tried to make herself relax in their arms.

"Hey Harry, Ron. How was your vacation?" she asked.

"Great, got lots of quidditch practice in" Hermione rolled her eyes, was this all they thought about?

"How was yours? I wish you would have came for at least a week and visited!"

Hermione eyes darkened just a twinge "You know I can't Harry. I need to stay with my father. He needs me now" she answered.

Harry exchanged uneasy looks with Ron. Hermione caught it but kept her panic down.

"So lets find seats then, shall we?" Hermione jumped at the idea and started walking hastily towards the train. She didn't want to seem disrespectful, but she really didn't want to run into Mrs. Weasley...she touched her way to much.

*************************

Mountains and lakes were slipping by the train and Neville Longbottom opened the compartment door to Hermione, Ron and Harry's compartment.

"You are wanted at the front of the train, Hermione" he said timidly. Hermione kind of frightened him now. Her eyes were either dark, or completely blank. No longer full of the life they used to withhold.

She got up, said a quick farewell and wandered slowly to the front of the train. 'Well here we go. I know Head Boy is Draco. It's not Harry, who else would it be?" She had gotten her letter recently, but the news just didn't make her as happy as she once hoped it would.

The people looking out of their corridors at her just stared. She looked so..dead. Her hair wasn't bushy anymore, it just hung in strands down her back. Her eyes were lifeless, creepy. She was wearing alot of clothes, but still managed to look sick, skinny. She just floated down the hallway not even seeing people. Not really caring.

She entered the head compartment and to her dismay her fears were answered when she seen the trademark blonde hair.

"Malfoy" she said when she entered.

"Granger" he replied, with a nod of his head.

She sat down on the opposite seat and stared at the blank wall ahead of her. The door opened and Severus Snape swooped into the room. He smiled at Draco (or the closest he could get to smiling) and scowled at Hermione (as usual).

"You are our new school heads. Let me first give you the schools congratulations. You will be housing together, in the head of house dorms. You will be shown there after the feast, and given your password when you are shown to it. Once again congratulations" and with that he turned on his heel, his cape billowing behind him, and swept from the room.

Hermione stood up and reached out to slide the door open. Draco just looked at her. For some unknown reason he reached out and grabbed onto her shoulder, spinning her around to look at him. She winced ever so slightly.

'Plllease don't let him notice that' she begged.

"'What was that about?' he asked himself. He looked into her face and was taken aback, her eyes were so empty of emotion.

He dropped his hand and she walked away.

*****************************

The train shuddered to a stop and Harry, Ron and Hermione climbed down the steps. It had started raining about an hour ago, they splashed their way towards a carriage and jumped inside. It immediatly began moving up the sloping drive to the castle.

"I forgot to ask you," Ron said "But who is head boy this year?"

"Malfoy" Hermione said, with a half shrug.

Both boys groaned.

"Sorry Mione" they said.

"Its okay, I probably won't really see that much of him anyway." 'I hope' she added to herself.

***********************

After the feast ended Hermione made her way towards Proffesor McGonagal. They waited for Malfoy and started towards their new home for this year.

Prof. McGonagal was rambling about something, Hermione wasn't paying any attention at all.

'Jesus ef christ!! Malfoy better not ask me any questions. I know damn well that he noticed me flinch in that compartment. If he asks, deny him, be a bitch, do NOT let him find out!' she told herself sternly

Malfoy also was not listening to the professor.

'I wonder whats wrong with Granger? Why is she so different..why didn't I notice it before?" he asked himself. "Oh well I DONT care, I never have and I never will." he reprimanded.

"Are you listening?" a very flustered Professor asked them. "No boys are to be in the Head Girls' room, and no girls are to be in the Head Boys. Do I make myself clear?"

"Yes Professor" they answered in unison.

She gave them their password and they went inside.

Hermione made a beeline for the couch. She lowered herself gingerly upon it and threw her arm over her eyes.

Draco decided to push her buttons early. He loved pissing her off.

"Soooo, hows Potty and the Weasel? Up to anything daring yet? They must have went a whole" *Gasps in mock shock* "2 hours without anything amazing happening."

Hermione shrugged.

"How was your summer mudblood? Boring I would suppose. Just sit at home by yourself all summer do you not?"

Hermione took her hand off of her eyes.

"I am NOT a mudblood, and no, it was far from boring" she snarled at him.

"Your a mudblood, admit it to yourself. Everyone else already knows...its not a secret"

"Stop calling me a mudblood Malfoy."

"Or what Granger?"

In one quick motion she was up and striding towards him, her mind on Draco, not her pain. She was right in front of his face.

"Or nothing! Im just asking you to PLEASE stop making my life worse than it already is!! So lets just make this easy. You stay in your room and I'll stay in mine, if we are in fact BOTH in the common room, we won't talk to each other. Okay? Okay!" and she turned to leave.

'Make her life 'Worse? What can possibly be so bad about this goodie-two-shoes' life?' Malfoy thought.
He remembered what happened in the compartment and ventured it again. He grabbed onto Hermiones arm and spun her around towards him, this time not releasing his grip, but not holding on too hard either. Her wince was, once again, noticeable.

"Why the fuck are you wincing Granger? I'm hardly touching you. Potty and the Weasel too rough with you?" he asked, mockingly.

"Im wincing because it hurts you idiot. Now let me go."

He didn't let go.

"Let me GO, MALFOY!" she said, suddenly becoming hysterical.

He still didn't let go. Instead he started backing her up towards the wall.

Slowly.
