Ch. 1: The Masked Shadow

The walls of the castle seemed to be carved from blocks of ice rather than stone the night that he arrived. Still, he pressed his fingers to the grooves of the gray matter to steady himself. It was late, nearly three in the morning, and he knew that no students should have been awake at this hour. That made this task all the easier for him. He had traveled a long, long way to get where he was and at great risk to himself and his dear friends. Still, they were in safety, and he needed to speak with his mentor.

Slowly, he entered the castle, his black robes and cloak rippling around him in a gentle hiss as he went. No one could see his face if he happened upon a careless student anyway. He wore a cowl over his mask that cast his features in shadow, and even if some stray light grazed him, there was a black mask just beneath the cowl. It was a plane mask carved of polished obsidian and it revealed only his eyes, which were yellow with slit pupils. Normally, the figure would have carried a staff, but he had to leave that with his friends. They needed all the protection he could possibly provide.

He took a flight of steps at a rapid pace, the ticking on the stone revealing that he did not wear shoes, not that he could if he had wished. Beneath his robes, his feet were angled so that he walked on the front of his feet, which were reptilian in nature with sharp black talons beneath. They were what made the soft clicking sound. He stopped and his breath caught as he entered the great hall. He had never seen such a sight as the ceiling here, rippling with stars and the dark clouds of the night sky. He couldn’t help but pause, and for a moment he gazed at it. His father had never spoken of that before.

He growled softly at the thought of his father and quickly banished it from his mind, racing silently across the great hall and through another door. He knew where to go because he could smell his mentor. His mentor was deep in the castle, very deep, nearly two floors beneath the main entrance. He had not known Hogwarts to have dungeons, but then how could he? He had never been here before.

The cloaked figure stopped as he rounded a corner and came face to face with a teenage boy. For a moment, they were both stunned, and stood staring at each other as though they had never seen other people before. Then the boy animated, whipping out his wand, and the dark figure raced away with the boy quick on his heels. He knew that face, that hair, and the jagged scar that marked his brow. The boy bent on hexing him was Harry Potter, and the man was completely caught off guard. This was the boy that he had longed all his life to meet, to thank, and here he was about to be hexed by him.

The man ran all the harder with Harry on his heels, “You won’t get away from me! You’re a Death Eater! I know it! You won’t escape!” Harry’s voice echoed after him and he couldn’t help but wince. It was all true, especially when it came to the lack of escape. He had no clue where he was running until he bowled right into a man wearing the nicest blue robes he had ever seen. He tumbled over, and quickly threw up his hand, bringing up a shield spell as the red bolt lanced towards him, reflecting the spell.

“Professor Dumbledore! It’s a Death Eater, Sir! I found him in the corridor outside the great hall!” Harry shouted despite the fact that the Headmaster was only a foot from him, his wand pointed at the now seated black figure.

Albus Dumbledore rose to his feet, taking out his wand as well and aiming it at the black robed figure, though he spoke quite calmly, “You don’t seem like a Death Eater to run from the boy Voldemort is so determined to kill. Explain yourself.”

“Please, I am a Death Eater, but not by choice.” The dark robed man hissed, his voice quite deep. “My name is Seneco and I came to speak with Severus Snape.” He rasped, continuing to hold his shield spell in place.

“You do not have a surname, Seneco?” Dumbledore commented, “Why are you here in Hogwarts, and what do you mean you did not chose the path of the Death Eater? I know Voldemort only takes followers who are devoted to him and his evil.”

The dark figure was silent for a moment before he whispered, “When I was born he gave me my mark. Seneco Riddle is my name. The Dark Lord is my father…”

For the first time in Harry’s life, he saw that the Headmaster was indeed quite stunned, “That is impossible. I have not received any information of the existence of Riddle having a son.” Dumbledore murmured quietly.

“Of course not. My father made his Death Eaters take a wizards vow never to speak of me. I dishonored him and left him ages ago with my friends. I have been in hiding ever since. I knew no one in the wizarding world would believe me or listen to me, so I just chose not to exist, but I need to speak with Severus Snape…” Seneco murmured, rising slowly and carefully to his feet, his shield charm fading as he lowered his hand.

“You’re Voldemort’s son? Bloody hell…” Harry gawked, his wand still pointed at the man, “Why do you need to speak to Snape?”

“Professor Snape, Harry.” Dumbledore said cheerfully, lowering his wand and slipping it into his pocket, “And lower your wand, boy, this is a guest.”

“But how do you know he isn’t lying, Sir!?” Harry looked at the Headmaster with a stunned expression.

“He hasn’t attacked us yet. We will simply need to speak with Severus.” Dumbledore said with a familiar twinkle in his eye, “Please, Harry, Seneco, come with me.”

Harry lowered his wand reluctantly and followed after Dumbledore, his eyes never leaving the black-cloaked man who followed them obediently. Here Seneco had managed to run into the one man his father was afraid of, and the one he had wanted to speak to in years. He knew that the next few weeks would be extremely interesting ones, to say the least.
