My Chemical Romance - Our Lady Of Sorrows

"We could be perfect one last night,
And die like star crossed lovers when we fight."

The battle raged on around Hermione. Bolts of colored lightning shot out of wand tips, some missing, but most hitting their marks. There was beauty in battle; the colors flying around like fireworks, the simplicity of life or death fighting. There were no grey areas. You fought for your life. You did everything you could to ensure the side you thought was right won.
Hermione felt exhilirated. She was ducking and dodging and casting spells left and right, and killing and people were trying to kill her, and through it all, she couldn't help thinking that this was the pinnacle of her life. This is what everything she had done and become led up to. This is why she was alive.

Then she saw him: Snape. The traitor who killed Dumbledore. She saw him pull his wand, aim, and mouth the dreaded Killing Curse. She raised her wand to cast at him, to try to hit him in a final act of rebellion. Everything was moving in slow motion, and she could see the jagged green light coming right at her.

TO her surprise, the curse missed. Snape's aim was off! The curse flew over her right shoulder. She glanced behind her, eyes following the curse. She saw it hit Antonin Dolohov square in the chest. Dolohov fell over, frozen, eyes wide in shock.

Hermione's gaze returned to Snape, who's mouth was set in a grim line. She raised her wand to attempt another curse. Snape suddenly shot another Avada Kedrava about two feet to her left, killing Lucius Malfoy. Hermione's eyes widened in understanding.

"And we can settle this affair,
If you would shed your yellow."

Hermione fought her way to Snape's side. She was shocked when suddenly he pulled her to him, so they were touching shoulders and fighting together. Hermione, however, had to solve the mystery.

"Why are you fighting with me?" she yelled.

"Because I'm on your side!" he answered, firing a few hexes.

"But you killed Dumbledore!" she shouted back.

"Woman, I don't have time to explain now! Please, just have faith in me for a few hours, and I promise I'll answer any questions you have. Right now we have to fight!" Snape was beginning to sound frustrated.

Hermione didn't have time to really think about it. He had, after all, saved her life twice, so what choice did she have? She continued the battle, with resolve to not only get out of this alive for her sake, but to get Snape out alive so her curiosity could be quenched.

"Take my hand and then
We'll solve the mystery of laceration gravity,
This riddle of revenge."

Together they battled, side by side, working together as if they were made from the same mold. They were perfectly synchronized in their war. He filled in the gaps she left open. She anticipated his movements, and together they flowed, as if partners in a ballet. They wrought a path of destruction before them, shooting and slicing and hexing, until Hermione lost track of which curses were hers, and which ones had come from Snape's wand.

"Please understand that it has to be this way and
Stand
Up fucking tall,
Don't let them see your back and
Take
My fucking hand,
And never be afraid again."

Suddenly, Snape grabbed her hand, and took off at a run, dragging her with him. They crossed the battlefield, feet splashing in pools of blood. Hermione tripped over a body. Snape didn't hesitate. He wrenched her to her feet by the hand he was still holding.

"We have to get to the front lines!"

Hermione thought they had been at the front lines, but he must've meant the battle between Voldemort and Harry. A deep part in the pit of Hermione's chest was terrified to finally see Voldemort face to face, but the adreneline coursing through her veins convinced her otherwise, so her feet continued to fly over the battle scarred ground.

"We've only got one chance to put things at an end,
And cross the patron saint of switchblade fights."

They reached the front lines just in time to see Harry throw his wand to the side. He had a fierce expression on his face. He pulled the sorting hat out of his sleeve, reached inside, and pulled out the sword of Gryffindor. He regally raised the blade, looked Voldemort in the eyes and gave a small bow.

Voldemort did something then that shocked everybody in sight. He grabbed Harry's wand off the ground and transfigured it into a viscious looking silver sword with a curved blade. In one fell swoop, he swung the blade sideways, decapitating Harry.

Snape shot Hermione a panicked look, and they took off in a run again, seeking shelter in some nearby woods.

"You said,
We're not celebrities,
We spark and fade,
They die by threes."

After running for what felt like miles, they stopped somewhere in the middle of dense forest. Hermione collapsed on the pine needle covered ground, and vomited violently. She heaved and coughed until she felt her stomach muscles give out. Then the sobbing started.

Hermione cried until she began retching again. She dry heaved, tears streaming down her cheeks. This cycle of heaving and sobbing continued for a while, when suddenly she felt a cool hand on the back of her neck.

"Miss Granger," Snape said, not unkindly, "You need to calm yourself. The giants will arrive soon, then we will have to flee again if we hope to survive."

Hermione stared at him incredulously.

"I have no wish to live in a world run by Voldemort. A world where everything I held dear is dead."

"How do you think I feel!" Snape shouted, making Hermione jump. "I am now regarded as a traitor by both sides! Do you think Voldemort will show me any mercy? No! I will be made an example of! I will be tortured and raped and Merlin only knows what else! For years, probably! He's not going to just let me die! While I didn't have as much to lose as you did, my life is over as well."

"And what do you think will become of me?" Hermione yelled back, "Harry Potter's best friend? Do you not think I will suffer the same inhumanities you will?"

"I'll make you
Understand,
And you can trade me for an apparation"

They sat in tense silence for several moments. Snape wrapped his arms around Hermione, resting his chin on top of her head. She relaxed in his embrace, seeking comfort from whatever source she could find it.

"Why did you kill Dumbledore?" she mumbled.

Sighing, Snape pulled away and answered, "Because he made me. He polyjuiced himself as me, then made an Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy, posing as me. You know how his hand was rotting?" At Hermione's nod, he continued, "That's because he made a vow that wasn't his to make. He then came to me and told me when the time came, I was to protect Draco and do the deed myself. To make things worse, he had drank poison earlier that night to ensure I would follow through. It's not so hard to kill a man you know is already suffering and dying. He asked me to do it, and as much as I've hated myself everyday since, I had to do what he wished."

Hermione had no words to reply to his confession. She just nodded and scooted closer to him, hoping he would put his arms around her again.

Suddenly, they heard loud crashing, like trees being pulled out by their roots.

"The giants are here," Hermione whispered, terror all over her face.

"Stand
Up fucking tall,
Don't let them see your back and
Take
My fucking hand,
And never
Trust."

Snape stood first. He wiped his hands on his robes and reached out to Hermione. He pulled her up, then pulled her close.

"Fight or flee? If we fight, we will surely die, but if we flee, we could suffer a much worse fate," Snape inquired.

"Fight," replied Hermione without hesitating.

Snape grimly nodded, and together they headed toward the uproar, holding hands.

"You said, who put the words in your head?
Oh how wrong we were to think
That immortality meant never dying."

They didn't last long against the giants. Snape was killed by a giants swinging a tree like a baseball bat. Every bone in his body was crushed by the impact. Hermione ran to his side, and was killed immediatly by the same giant. Together they lay on the forest floor, boneless and limp. The battle was over.
