Chapter 1: The Confession

Chiara Carmel Chalmers woke up early. She had hardly slept the night before she was bursting with anticipation to be back at her beloved school. She rose out of her bed and slowly began to dress in to the clothes she was going to wear for the day that were neatly set out on the edge of her bed.

Today was the start of another year, her 6th year at Hogwarts for Chiara. Chiara was a pretty girl, she was medium height and slim, her hair was long and black, her face pallor but her eyes and lips always overpowered her paleness as no one looked at anything other then her very mystical green and gold eyes.

Chiara walked out of her bedroom on the way making sure that her trunk was locked and she had left nothing behind around the room. She walked down to her kitchen to see her mother, Carmel, sitting at the dinning table alone with a letter in her hand.

“Morning mother.” Chiara chimed. Carmel looked up at her and smiled.

“Good morning Chiara.” She put the letter down. “Chiara please sit down. I need to tell you something very important.” Chiara began to feel her stomach turn. Her curiosity as to what had to be known flourished and she sat down opposite her mother. She looked at her mother steadily her heart beating at a million paces. “Chiara I know what I‘m going to tell you will be hard for you to understand but I have kept it from you for to long and you need to know now.” Chiara’s heart began to pound even harder if it was possible. Bile began to rise to her throat. “Aldrich isn‘t you biological father.”

That was it. Chiara felt as though her whole body had just exploded. She had lost her sight and she was sure that she had collapsed. How could this be right. The father she thought was her own for 15 years wasn’t? Carmel walked over to Chiara and held her hand.

“Why? Does dad know about this?” Chiara whispered, finding it hard to talk. Carmel nodded slowly, feeling sad about keeping the secret from her daughter too long.

“He knew before you were born but he took it upon himself to still marry me and take you on as his daughter. Just because he isn‘t you biological father doesn‘t mean he loves you any less.” Carmel comforted.

“What about Zach?” Chiara felt somehow that she was half a daughter, like she wasn’t really who she was supposed to be and now she knew that he brother wasn’t entirely her brother but her half.

“Zach is Aldrich‘s biological son and your half brother but there is no difference between how your father and I love you.” Chiara listened to her mother saying ‘your father’ it sounded fake, unreal, he wasn’t her real father she had just grown up thinking he was. “Listen Chiara Aldrich is more a father then your biological one will ever be do you understand me?” Chiara looked up at her mother silently. “And Zach must never know about this. It‘s just between your father, you and I.” Chiara thought for a moment. She wondered who her real father was. Her mother must have know who he was.

“Who is he?” Chiara mumbled.

“Sorry?” Carmel couldn’t quite hear Chiara’s question.

“Who is my father?” Chiara asked clearly, her stomach bubbling with vomit waiting to come out of her. Carmel looked at her calmly.

“His name is Severus Snape. Your potions professor.” Carmel replied. Chiara’s eyes almost popped out of her head.

“WHAT? He can‘t be my father, he‘s so mean and cruel, I‘m nothing like him!” Chiara was enraged.

“I‘m sorry Chiara I am. I was young and foolish.” Carmel picked up the envelope. “This is for you to give him, he doesn‘t know himself. I have decided to leave it to you to have a chance to tell him that you are his daughter, and when you do give him this letter. It explains everything.”

“No, no, no, no, no this is all a joke isn‘t it?” Chiara stood up and walked away from her mother. “A cruel joke for me just before I go back to school.” Carmel looked startled. She hadn’t thought of Chiara denying the whole truth.

“No Chiara sweetheart, this is all true. I know it must be hard for you to understand and believe.” Carmel walked towards Chiara again holding out the letter. “Please Chiara you must believe what I am saying.” Chiara felt her heart explode in to millions of little pieces, her stomach began to churn the vomit rising to her throat till she couldn’t hold it down anymore and then it was too late. She opened her mouth and everything that was inside of her landed on the kitchen floor.

Carmel jumped back trying to stay away from the vomit that now covered her luxurious kitchen floor and comfort her daughter at the same time. Chiara was bent over she could taste the sick in her mouth as she began to spit it all out till she couldn’t taste it anymore. All this was hitting her hard. It was just to unbelievable. Severus Snape’s daughter? Why did it have to be her why not someone else who deserved him as a father. Chiara wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and stood upright and walked slowly over to a chair.

“Couldn‘t you have told me this yesterday. Why this morning when I‘m getting ready for school?” Chiara asked angrily.

“Because I thought maybe if I told you before you would have tried not to go back to Hogwarts.” Carmel took out her wand and flicked it towards the vomit which disappeared instantly.

“I wouldn‘t leave Hogwarts for anything. Everything I want to do in life I have to do by finishing Hogwarts.”

“I know.” Carmel gave Chiara the letter once more and Chiara took it in to her hand. “I am so sorry about this sweetheart.” Carmel took Chiara in to her arms and hugged her. There were footsteps coming towards the kitchen. Chiara looked up and saw who she thought was her father stand there.

“I see you told her Carmel.” Aldrich walked towards them not looking displeased but slightly relieved.

“Yes she knows everything.” Carmel stood up straight.

“I do not want you to think that I love you any less Chiara I did bring you up myself.” Aldrich said kindly in his posh accent.

“Yes I know.” Chiara slumped. Another set of footsteps came towards the kitchen. In came a boy with dark brown hair not as dark as her own and green eyes. A look totally different from Chiara and all. Zach was only a couple of months younger then her, about 10 months which made him 15 and Chiara 16. They were quite close in age.

Zach and Chiara were very close to each other. They talked about almost everything, they always had time for each other no matter what. Zach was very popular amongst the girls in his year and almost as smart as Chiara was at his age but not quite. She was better then him in all of the subjects when she was 15 as schooling was her first priority not Zach’s. They both were different people they wanted different things but somehow they were both just the same when it came down to them. They didn’t talk about everything, there was a line that they did not cross. The personal things that brother and sister don’t talk about were not brought in to any conversations unless it was dangerous.

“Morning all.” He chimed.

“Good morning Zachariah.” Aldrich smiled.

“Dad.” Zach nodded and sat down at the table next to Chiara. “What‘s up with you Chiara you look like you‘ve seen a ghost… Ha. That wouldn‘t make you pale we see ghosts all around Hogwarts.” Zach laughed at himself. Chiara looked at Carmel.

“Remember what I told you.” Carmel whispered. Zach looked up between his mother and his sister.

“Nothing Zach I just feel a little ill.” Chiara lied.

“Oh well cheer up. We‘re going back to Hoggies.” Zach mused.

“Yeah.” Chiara felt more ill at the thought of having to go to school and know her potions professor is actually her father. Chiara stood up and left the kitchen slowly heading back to her bedroom with out breakfast.

*************

Chiara sat at the Slytherin table . She had felt better now then she had this morning. She had thought of ways to tell Snape that he was her father over and over again but none seemed good. They were all bad ways. One was after a class and another was just a time where she walks in to his office. She couldn’t think of anymore. She didn’t talk to the people sitting next to her she merely just kept quiet and ate her dinner that had arrived after the first years sorting.

The hall was at its best, each house table was filled with a wonderful assortment of foods and cheerful students. The weather was dim, but the hall was lit with floating candles. Chiara watched as the house ghosts teased a few new students scaring them half to death. Chiara found Hogwarts to be the most amusing place on earth, to her it was her second home. She was extremely glad that she had gotten a chance to be at Hogwarts.

Chiara looked up and down the Slytherin table. Her eyes flicked over old students and new students that had only become a part of their house a few minutes ago. She didn’t like being in Slytherin, it just wasn’t her. She wasn’t mean or a smart ass, she was normal and very pleasant, she hated being given a bad name because of her house she suddenly realised why she was in Slytherin, it was because of Snape. She had Snape‘s blood running through her body that’s why she was a Slytherin.

Chiara looked up at the head table, through all the professors that were teaching at Hogwarts this year. She stared at the professor with long, greasy, black hair, dark eyes and pale skin which made him look ghostly. Chiara was always so nervous aground around him, she was never nervous around anyone, just Snape. Now she and Snape had a very special bond that only she and her mother and her other father knew. Snape knew nothing of having a 16 year old daughter and Chiara was the one who was going to break the news which made her most nervous.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Meanwhile~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Snape caught Chiara staring at him for the past 5 minutes. He sat there wondering why she was staring at him, was there something odd about him? There couldn’t be though. She had been staring at him like this for the past 6 years in class, in hallways, at meals, all the time she would stare. He wondered if there was a bit of an infatuation going on with her. Was she obsessed with him? Snape scoffed at him self and stared back at Chiara angrily.
Chiara turned away hastily when she saw Snape glare at her, his eyes dark and angry. She had forgotten what she was doing as she had done so many times before. She felt someone push in beside her and looked up to see a tall platinum blond boy sit down beside her.
\"Hello Chiara.\" The boy smirked. His eye\'s were icy blue as they pierced Chiara\'s light green ones. His lips pointed in to a smirk as he moved closer to her.
\"Hello Draco.\" Chiara smiled, trying to be nice. She had known Draco for a long time, she was just never interested in him. She didn\'t go for the type of guy Draco was: he was an arrogant, bossy, cheating user.
\"So how were your holidays?\" Draco asked. His eyes ran over Chiara\'s face and down her body.
\"Good, how about yours?\" Chiara put a piece of potato in to her mouth. She had known for the past year that Draco wanted to get a piece of her, but Chiara wouldn’t let him. She wasn’t going to let a boy walk all over her and use her like Draco had done to all the other girls he was with. he had been with one of Chiara\'s best friends at the end of the last year and chucked her away like a dirty rag after she gave in and decided to sleep with him, one thing Chiara wasn\'t going to do was give in to sleeping with a guy, especially Draco Malfoy.
\"Ah they were ok. I didn’t do much.\" Draco said sadly, his eyes became shallow, almost made him look as though he was deeply hurt. Chiara had realised that Draco’s father was now in jail. Chiara didn\'t really care about Draco\'s father being in Azkaban, he was a death eater and that’s where they all should be no matter who they are.
\"I guess that your holidays wouldn‘t be so good. How’s your mother doing?\" Chiara asked softly. Draco looked at her and smiled again.
\"She’s good considering.\" Draco spent his holidays caring for his mother as the reality of Lucius being in Azkaban hit her. It was hard for Draco to watch his mother cry and sit alone in a room talking to his father\'s picture. For Draco, this had to be the hardest thing he had ever gone through and hated Harry Potter for getting his father in to Azkaban.
\"Well that’s good.\" Chiara began to eat some roast pumpkin and finish off her pate. She didn’t really feel like talking more, she just wanted to finish what was on her plate before it disappeared.
\"I heard you like Quidditch.\" Draco stumbled a little in changing the subject.
\"I love Quidditch.\" Chiara was a Quidditch freak, she loved everything about it, she just didn’t play it. She was to scared to play, to scared to get hurt and loose. Every time someone talked about Quidditch she had to be there to hear it all. Quidditch was her love and life and it was all due to her step father who played for a Quidditch team himself.
\"Why don’t you play for Slytherin? I’m captain you know.\" Draco flashed his Quidditch Captain’ badge.
\"Congratulations Draco, I knew you’d be captain.\" Chiara looked at the emerald green badge with a silver outline. \"I don’t play Quidditch because I can’t play for quids.\"
\"How can you not play? Everyone can play Quidditch, maybe not so well, but they can.\" Draco shook his fork after he ate the piece of meat on it. Chiara laughed at him and looked down the table and saw her brother smiling at her and moving his eyebrows up and down quickly. Chiara shook her head at him and turned back to Draco to see Pansy sitting next to him poking and prodding him.
\"Draco?\" Chiara looked over at Pansy. Chiara had despised pansy ever since she met her. She didn’t understand why she was popular, all she did was hang out with Draco and he wasn’t so great. Pansy always thought she was better then everyone else when everyone else was better then her.
\"Yes I know what she’s doing, I’m just trying to ignore her.\" Draco whispered to Chiara. Chiara wondered how could anyone ignore Pansy Parkinson?. She was probably the hardest person to ignore and she was so bloody annoying. Her little snobbish remarks and her lies always aggravated Chiara, especially when Pansy had started a rumour about her.
\"Why are you ignoring her?\" Chiara asked quietly.
\"DRACO!\" Pansy whined loudly, making a part of the table stare at her. Draco’s face turned bright red and he spun around to face Pansy.
\"Will you shut your BIG FAT mouth?\" Draco snarled angrily. Pansy moved away from him slightly, her face turning pink and her eyes puffing up and then she ran off sobbing loudly. Now the whole Slytherin table and a bit of the Ravenclaw table were staring over at Draco.
Chiara looked back down the table at her brother. Now he was winking and nodding as he moved his head between her and Draco, signalling that he thought Draco and Chiara were going to be together. Chiara shook her head again and mouthed ‘No’ then turned back to Draco.
Draco looked at Chiara. \"I’m sorry about that. She just never stops nagging me.\" Draco apologised.
\"Yeah I noticed.\" Chiara laughed. Chiara looked back to her brother again, he kept nodding and Chiara shook her head. Chiara could hear something pop up in to her head.
‘Oh come on Ara, you know you’re going to get together, you KNOW I’m right.’
Zach always told her things he heard and she had not. When he heard someone talking about her or which ever guys wanted to go out with her he always knew and told Chiara. One of those boys was Draco Malfoy. Zach over heard Draco talking to Blaise about Chiara. Chiara never heard anything about Zach, she never really listened to other people she was always to preoccupied.
Chiara then forgot what it was when Draco leaned over and asked her. \"Why is your brother nodding like that?\" Chiara looked at Draco going red in the face. Her heart began to pound as she thought of something to say.
\"Oh nothing, he’s just being stupid, you know what Zach’s like,\" Chiara fumbled. Chiara looked back at Zach and gave him a dirty look.
\"Chiara?\" Draco asked. Chiara looked at him again. \"Would you help me study this year?\" Draco muttered, seeming embarrassed. \"You’re good in all of your subjects I mean you have an O on your O.W.L’s.\"
\"Oh um…” Chiara looked down at her plate of food for a moment. Was this a plan for him to get closer to her? Or was this really for study sake. Chiara highly doubted that. She looked at Draco and saw a hoping look and didn’t know what else to say. “I don‘t know Draco.”
“Why not?” Draco looked angry.
“I just don‘t… know” Chiara shrugged, she was a little scared of becoming closer to Draco, fearing that she wouldn’t be able to resist him later on.
“Please, I need the help.” Draco didn’t look needy at all but he sounded it more then well.
“Ok… I’ll study with you Draco.\" Chiara sighed, wondering what she was getting herself in to.
\"Great.\" Draco grinned. He had, in fact, become one step closer to Chiara, the girl he’d wanted for a year. The one girl that every guy found so hard to get close to wasn’t becoming so hard for him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Meanwhile~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Snape’s eyes were still on Chiara. He had heard Draco and Pansy Parkinson’s little tiff and laughed at it, he just didn’t show his laughter. He also found Chiara’s conversation with Draco and her little gestures with her brother amusing. Clearly Draco was trying to get close to Chiara, but she was too naive to realise it. Her brother, however, was telling her that they were. Snape knew that Chiara was a very naive girl. Snape always thought Chiara was a bit frigid, she never really had a boyfriend. Not that she was ugly or anything, absolutely not, she was beautiful fighting boys off all the time. She was just reserved, preferring school over boys.

Every time she shunned a boy away, her work in the classroom became better. She was magnificent in all his potions classes, the best student he had ever taught. Snape knew that Chiara would slowly, but surly, fall for Draco’s charms. None of the other girls resisted. It was, what Snape liked to say, the Malfoy curse. He had spent many years watching Lucius seduce women and then throw them away. Like father like son, Draco had learned to do the same thing.

Snape then looked away, thinking that young people were so naive and stupid nowadays and was glad he wasn’t a young boy; glad that he did not have to go through the pain of love or being picked on anymore. He liked being his cold self, nothing to worry about in his life other than himself.
