Creole Magic

Disclaimer: I do not own any thing in the wizarding world it all belongs to JK Rowling, (except for Katarina and Mojo they’re mine) I just like to play with them.

Katarina DeMonet sat looking out the window of her New Orleans home. It was a beautiful day outside; the sun was bright and everything should have been perfect, but it wasn’t. “Why today, Why me?” she thought. In less than an hour she would be leaving all of the things she had loved behind.

Almost a week ago Katarina’s parents, Jack and Marie, had received urgent news from the Ministry of Magic in London requesting Jack’s immediate services, for you see Jack was considered one of the top Aurors in the world. Marie on the other had preferred to use her magic in a different way; she owned and operated what appeared to the Muggle eye to be a small flower shop, but in all reality it was the number one witches’ fashion store in the entire United States. She did a brisk business in dress robes, garter belts that just happened to be wand holsters as well, and bewitched jewelry that would slightly alter ones appearance (these were especially popular with the younger witches who had slight acne problems.) Marie had in fact made the cover of Witch Weekly Four times now. Marie would now be moving her shop to Diagon Alley much to the extreme displeasure of her loyal customers. They would just have to order by owl from now on.

Alas, everything would soon be changing for Katarina and her family soon. They would be leaving their lovely Garden District home for a flat in London that wasn’t even ready to be lived in yet. The Ministry had informed them that they would be staying with the Weasley family who had enthusiastically offered their services for the time being . For you see Marie was cousin and best friend of Sirius Black. Marie had fled after the war began begging Sirius to come with her. She wanted him to travel the world with her, but Sirius had refused. Marie knew that if she stayed she too would have been killed; her family was deep in the inner rings of the Dark Lord’s circle. Marie had refused to take any part in the activity. She thought it to be vile and simply unacceptable to take part in the Dark Lord’s plan. The situation was rapidly escalating; talk of the Potter’s child being killed because of a prophecy that was overheard was what finally drove her to leave. She said her good byes on the same day that lily and James went into hiding. She begged Sirius one last time to come with her but he refused, claimed he had to stay for James and Lily, so with tears in her eyes she left never looking back. News reached her fast that the Potters had been killed leaving behind a boy that should have been dead but wasn’t, and then soon after the news of Sirius’ (what Marie thought was insanity) escapade in London. It had broken her heart.

“Kat you all packed” Jack called to his daughter in his thick Cajun accent. Katarina had been gazing out her window watching her large grey cat Mojo prowl the gardens below. She always thought that he looked like a panther when he hunted. “Yeah dad I’ll be down in a second just got to snag Mojo out of the Garden” she called back. “Well hurry up cher that portkey thing will be ready in 20 minutes” he said. “Uggh! This is some serious bull shit!” She thought to herself as she descended the stairs into the luscious garden below. “Hey Mojo,” she called looking under random bushes for her beloved cat. “Come on, we have to hurry before they leave without us,” she smiled inwardly maybe that wouldn’t be such bad idea, but no she couldn’t cause her mom any more grief today. Marie was already having a tough time dealing with going back to her old home in London. Katarina wasn’t really too sure why though. Marie never talked about her old home or her family for that matter; all Katarina knew was that her mom had fled due to a war that was taking place at the time, which now seemed to be brewing all over again. Katarina remembered the day almost a year ago when her mom had gotten word that her cousin Sirius had died. Katarina didn’t even know that her mother even had a cousin. She remembered how miserable her mother was. For a long time it seemed like everyday her mother looked horrible. She had cried for days and had deep purple circles under her eyes (Katarina had the suspicion that her mother wasn’t sleeping). Marie had refused to go to work, her shop stayed closed for days, much to the dismay of her customers. Finally one day Marie reopened her shop, but it was quite apparent that Marie wasn’t the same anymore. It seemed that a piece of her was missing.

“Oh hey bud what you got there?” Mojo had finally come out from behind a large flower pot which held a beautiful assortment of wild flowers, holding what appeared to be a large potato with legs that was currently cursing at the top of it s lungs. “Damn garden gnomes,” Katarina grinned. “Mojo go toss it over the fence, but hurry back it’s time to leave.” Mojo nodded his head and bounded off toward the garden wall. Katarina turned in a slow circle trying to memorize every single detail of the exotic garden around her. “Gods I’m going to miss this place,” suddenly she felt a sadness that threatened to overwhelm her. She had spent so many hours just sitting on the swing in the garden day dreaming, and over there was the tree that she fell out of when she was nine and had broken her arm. Her mom had mended it instantly but it was still scary. She could feel the tears forming, this was quite possible the worst thing that could happen to a sixteen year old girl. She was about to move to a foreign country and start school in a place where she knew no one, as a matter of fact she had never even been to a real school, her mom had what the Muggle kids fondly called home schooled her, but the headmaster at her new school (Dumbleydork or something like that) had agreed to let her start in the sixth year with students her own age. After all her mother had been the number one student of her class at Hogwarts. Katarina was suddenly jerked out of her thoughts by something furry rubbing against her leg. “Oh its you Mojo, say your good byes and lets go get this over with.” Mojo gave a sad mew as they walked away from the garden.

Katarina and Mojo entered into their now empty house ( their belongings had been sent along earlier today) to find her mom and dad standing in the living room around what Katarina was shocked to see was an old empty soda bottle. “That thing is going to take us to London?” Katarina asked with a sarcastic edge to her voice. “Yeah I’m skeptical too cher” her dad said with a grin “ but your mother assures me that it will work” he said as Marie gave her husband an exasperated look. “I promise both of you that this thing as you so lovingly call it will take us straight to the Burrow.” “The Burrow? What the hell is that?” Katarina asked. A little annoyed that no one had even bothered to tell her the details of their trip. “The Burrow,” Marie patiently explained, “is where we will be staying until our flat is ready. Molly and Arthur Weasley, some dear friends of mine have graciously invited us to stay with them until we have a place of our own. As I understand it may be a little crowded, but please no complaining, from either of you.” at this Marie gave Jack a scathing look. “Mom?” Katarina cautiously asked, “doesn’t your family own a house in London? Couldn’t we stay their instead?” Katarina knew before the words even left her mouth that this was a bad, bad idea. Her mother turned slightly pale and she could visibly see the vain pulsing ever so slightly in Marie’s throat. “NO! We will not be staying at Grimauld Place; now put that damn cat in his box it’s time to leave.” Katarina knew she had crossed a line. When she went to apologize her father squeezed her shoulder and whispered “later darling give her time.” Katarina placed Mojo in his traveling crate promising him a nice long romp when they got to where they were going. “Alright her mother said it’s time. Now when I say so everyone place a hand on the Portkey and we will be off. Ok now 3...2...1 go!” Katarina placed a hand on the bottle and tightly gripped Mojo’s box with the other. The last thought she had was, “good bye warm days and spicy food, hello freaking cold and bland mush.” suddenly she felt like someone had grabbed her with a hook behind her belly button and yanked, hard.

When they finally stopped moving Katarina looked up to find herself in the midst of a bunch of people with the brightest red hair she had ever seen. “Let the fun begin,” she thought.
