“Stay, please,” Remus asked his friend and fellow Order member. “You never stay after the meetings, and I’d really like to have at least a little time to catch up with you.”

Severus snorted. “You won’t get to spend a second with me and you know that! Potter’s dogfather doesn’t give you room to breathe. I’m really surprised he’s not breathing down your neck at this precise moment. Did you throw him a bone to distract him?”

Remus stared at the dark haired man and shook his head in defeat. “Severus, why does it bother you so much that Sirius and I are together?”

With a sneer he spat, “It doesn’t bother me that you are with him. I promise you that.”

“Why won’t you stay for dinner then? Do you really hate him that much?” Remus looked up into Snape’s obsidian eyes pleading. “I know you can’t forgive him for the Shrieking Shack incident, and I don’t expect you to. Hell, I haven’t forgiven him either. I just wish you’d stay and eat, just once.”

“Hey Moony, where have you made off to?” Sirius called out from the kitchen.

He poked his head out of the door and saw the two men standing there in the foyer. Severus narrowed his eyes and growled, “I see he wasn’t distracted long enough.”

As Sirius walked up to the men, Remus quickly declared, “We’ll finish this later.”

“What? Couldn’t find the door by yourself, Snivillus? C’mon Moony, Molly’s just about done with dinner. It’s almost time to eat.”

Before he could protest, Sirius dragged Remus away from Snape by the wrist.

A week later, there was another Order meeting, but this time, as it ended; Sirius was called upstairs because of Buckbeak. Remus caught Severus’ eye and looked toward the stairs. Snape nodded his head in acknowledgement and the werewolf walked that way.

Remus pulled him into an empty room and cast locking and silencing charms on it. He looked hard at the tall man. “What is it? You tell me right now what the hell is so wrong with you staying and eating like a civilized person!”

Severus pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. “Remus, you wouldn’t understand.”

“Wouldn’t understand? Don’t you dare give me that bullshit.”

Throwing his hands up in the air, Severus sat on a moth eaten chair. “I give up! Fine, I’ll tell you.” Severus looked up with anger in his eyes.

“I don’t stay because I don’t think I could sit through a whole meal watching him treat you like he does! Black acts like you should be attached to his hip, among other places. He treats you like you are some kind of lap dog, when he’s the mutt! That son of a bitch parades you around this house like you are some kind of trophy he won. He won’t let you speak a word to anyone without him being present, and he’s cruel to you.” Severus voice got low and dangerous, “Shall I go on?”

Remus was expecting any answer but the one he got. He stood there with a look of pure astonishment on his face. His voice was not much above a whisper when he said, “He’s not cruel to me.”

In the time it took to blink, Snape got up from his chair and approached the wolf, grabbing his arm and lifting his robe sleeve. He revealed a dark bruise around his wrist. Caressing it gently, he asked softly, “He’s not?”

Remus jerked his arm away and looked up into his friend’s eyes. The usually emotionless black depths held more emotion than Remus had ever seen in them. Severus gently put his large hand on the werewolf’s face. “You don’t deserve what he does to you,” he whispered. “There was never any love loss between myself and Black, but you know that Azkaban has done something to him. He’s…different. Remus, he can’t love you like…”

Tears welled up in those large amber eyes. He knew that what Severus was telling him was true, but he’d never find someone to love him, simply because he was a werewolf. He was one of the inflicted. He cut Snape’s last sentence off as he leaned up and kissed his lips. It was a chaste kiss, but a kiss nonetheless. “I know, Severus. Believe me I know.”

Remus walked out of the room and up to the third floor to distract Sirius so he wouldn’t find Severus in the spare room. Severus knew. Remus knew. It was just too damn bad that Sirius didn’t.
