Chapter 1~
“Severus,” came the hissing voice of Voldemort, “You have betrayed me.” All of his surviving “loyal” Death Eaters had retreated, leaving their Lord and Master to face his enemies alone. “I will not leavis wis world without killing the traitor. YOU WILL DIE SEVERUS!” The Dark Lord raised his wand to cast the killing cruse on his once loyal servant.
Severus would have welcomed the killing curse with open arms, but there was one small problem. The Dark Lord’s sight had been damaged by a curse, so his aim wasn’t perfect. Voldemort’s wand was pointed at Severus’ left side, where Neville Longbottom stood. “Avada Kadavra.” Severus saw the green light at the tip of Voldemort’s wand before the curse was fully spoken. He grabbed Neville and fell to the ground, pulling the boy with him and effectively dodging the fatal curse.
Voldemort must have thought that Severus fell because he was dead for he laughed harshly. “Not only have I killed you Severus but I have killed the Longbottom boy as well.” The laughter became louder as the Dark Lord saw the members of the Order closing in on him. “I’ll see you in Hell Severus.”
That’s when it happened. The Potter boy stepped forward shouting “redimio animus,*” a spell which trapped the soul in the body. Several shouts of “Avada Kadavra” followed, causing Severus to stay on the ground so he wouldn’t be hit by a curse. It was then that he noticed the pain in his leg, the cause of a slicing hex he had not noticed until now. His attention was brought back to his surroundings when Neville gasped. Severus looked up just in time to see the Dark Lord fall to the ground, dead at last.
There were many shouts of joy as the once powerful dark wizard fell in a crumpled heap to the ground. Severus slowly raised himself from the ground, helping Longbottom up as well. Neville was pulled into the embrace of his grandmother seconds later, and Severus walked over to Albus Dumbledore. The headmaster was leaning heavily on Minerva McGonagall, who was looking rather tired herself. “Headmaster,” Severus said, nodding.
He took the headmaster’s arm, supporting the old man, and nodded to Minerva. She rushed off to check on the other Order members, leaving Albus and Severus alone. “For a minute there,” the older man croaked, showing how exhausted he was, “when you fell, I thought we had lost you.”
“Just dodging a curse, Albus.” Severus said dryly. Then he smirked, “You can’t get rid of me that easily.” Albus laughed and patted the Potions Master’s hand. Severus supported Albus as they made their way across the battlefield that was just outside the Hogwarts’ grounds. “You need to rest Albus. I’ll help you back to the castle.” The old man began to protest but Severus cut him off, “I’ll tell Minerva and take care of things.” He said with a raret oft of concern and compassion in his voice and eyes. “You need your rest because you will have to make a statement at the ministry later tonight.” Albus relented after a moremore minutes of bantering, and allowed Severus to help him to the castle.
After settling Albus in his office Severus made his way back to the battle field. It was then he remembered his wounded leg, but he didn’t stop moving. His injury could wait. The wounded people laying on the ground outside could not. Over the next three hours he helped Poppy Pomfrey heal the injured, bring some people up to the hospital wing for examinns, ns, and burry the dead. A short prayer was said over the graves, a longer service would be held later that week, and the surviving Order members made their way back to the castle. Severus left the group and headed for his chambers as soon as they were inside the school.
Bringing down his wards with whispered words he entered his private chambers. A flick of his wand and the wards were back in place, leaving Severus in total silence, with no fear of being interrupted. He walked to his bedroom and collapsed onto his bed. His blood and dirt stained robes left spots on the sheets, but Severus barely noticed. He was too exhausted to care about anything other than sleep.
He lay on his bed for what seemed like hours, even though it was only a few minutes, staring up at the ceiling. His eyelids grew heavy with sleep as he lay there, perfectly still. His body was still but his mind was moving at hyper-speed. The face of every fallen person, both Order members and Death Eaters, flashed in front of his eyes. He could have saved some of them. The face of Draco Malfoy flashed in his mind the most. He could have kept the boy from taking the Dark Mark, could have kept him away from his father until the war was ended.
It was Lucius Malfoy that had killed Draco. He had killed his own flesh and blood because Draco had repented and joined the light. A single tear fell from Severus’ dark eyes. He hadn’t wept for so long it was physically painful now. As he finally surrendered to sleep, the faces of the dead still flashing in his mind, more tears fell down his cheeks. “I’m sorry...” He whispered before falling into the blackness of slumber.
