New Loves Old Enemies

Ginny Weasley breathed in the crisp late summer evening air and smiled. She had gotten an owl from Headmistress Minerva McGonagall that day telling her that she had been accepted as the new Charms teacher and she would also be Head of Gryffindor House. It seemed that Professor Flitwick had decided to retire and spend a few years traveling. Ginny was so happy. Her father had told her that at 28 she would be one of the youngest teachers ever hired at Hogwarts in the past 100 years. She wasn’t intimidated though; she knew how to handle kids. She had to handle six brothers while she was growing up.

Ginny sent an owl to Hermione the next day telling her the good news. Ginny and Hermione became good friends after Hogwarts when they both went to University. It was little known that Cambridge had a Magical Studies Department and only the most promising and highest scoring students were invited to attend. Hermione had met Victor Krum there and renewed their friendship from the Tri-Wizard Tournament; that took place during Ginny’s third year. By the time Ginny graduated they were married, both working for the Ministry of Magic in Magical Charm and Curse Breaking and expecting their first child. Hermione sent an owl back suggesting that a couple of weeks before the term started they meet in Diagon Alley for a long over due day of shopping. Ginny owled right back agreeing to the shopping trip. She really needed some new robes for the new school year, supplies, parchment, quills, & a few extra books on Charms.

Ginny and Hermione met for lunch at the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley. They spent the day gossiping about the other members of the golden trio. Harry was already Head of the Magical Law Enforcement Agency. His position kept him so busy that he had yet to marry. Hermione speculated that he hadn’t even had a date since they graduated Hogwarts; he worked too hard trying to arrest the last of Voldemort’s supporters. Ron was a diplomatic attaché with the French Ministry of Magic working to promote closer relations with the Magical community there. Ron had also reacquainted himself with Fleur Delaclour, Ginny and Hermione were expecting to hear wedding bells very soon from the continent. Soon they began talking of their old teachers.

“Well, I am sure you heard that Dumbledore finally retired and McGonagall is headmistress. I believe that he is somewhere in the South Pacific chasing scantily clad witches on some island paradise though that image makes me shudder.” As if to prove her point Ginny shook herself making Hermione laugh. “Herm, you haven’t heard the most shocking thing, yet. The posn ofn of Defense Against the Dark Arts was open again and they brought in Neville Longbottom to teach. Snape got so mad he quit and went to teach at Durmstang.” Ginny and Hermione were both aware that after Hogwarts Neville became an Auror and a quite powerful one at that.

“I can’t believe that Snape just quit. I am sure that he was counting on getting it this time and Neville was the straw that broke the camel’s back huh? Well do you know who they have to teach potions then?” Hermione inquired

“Not a clue. I probably won’t know until next week when all the teachers have to report. Though, I am getting really curious. As soon as I find out I’ll owl you.” Ginny smiled at her friend.

Finishing their food that two friends went into Diagon Alley stopped at Gringots Wizarding Bank then shopped till they could shop no more. They were just leaving Flourish & Blotts when Hermione grasped Ginny’s arm and gasped. “Ginny look is that who I think it is? Is that Lucious Malfoy? He’s supposed to be in Azkaban.”

Ginny looked up in alarm, her hand on her wand. Her green eyes met the stormy grey eyes of the person in question and breathed a sigh of relief. “No Herm. That’s Draco. It is really disconcerting how much he looks like his father though.”

Days before the final battle with Voldemort, Draco Malfoy had come to Dumbledore bloody and beaten. He had witnessed something that had turned him from becoming a Death Eater. Draco gave over all the Death Eater’s plans and had actually fought right along side Harry, Ron and Hermione. Ginny looked at the man and decided that now there was gentleness about Draco that was never there when they were in school. He was also incredibly handsome. His silver-blonde hair was long but pulled back in a leather thong. He was dressed in an expertly tailored Muggle style suit in soft grey linen, a crisp white shirt and black leather shoes polished to a mirrored finish. Ginny decided that he looked quite dashing; like a cover of the Muggle magazine GQ. As he approached the two witches a genuine smile came across his features making him look nothing like the elder Malfoy.

“Miss Weasley. Mrs. Krum. How are you both today?”

Ginny was almost surprised at the almost warm tone in his voice. While they were in school he had always had a touch of a sneer in his voice whenever speaking to most anyone who was not sorted into Slytherin. “Draco Malfoy. My, my, my, aren’t we handsome? Where have you been keeping yourself?” Ginny drawled, hoping against hope that he couldn’t tell that her heart was beating a mile a minute.

“Here and there, Miss Weasley. I’m sorry ladies that I can’t stay and chat. I am dreadfully late for a business meeting.” Thus excusing himself, Draco Malfoy smiled at the two women and sauntered down the road toward Gringotts.

“My, he has a nice looking bum doesn’t he?”

“Hermione! You’re married.” Ginny gasped.

“Yes, Ginny dear. I may be married but I’m not dead yet. Don’t you think he has a nice bum, Ginny?” Hermione said to her friend in her most innocent tone. She had not missed the way Ginny had watched the former bane of their existence walk away.

“I do not want to talk about Draco Malfoy’s bum... but on the other hand you are absolutely right.” Ginny said as seriousl she she could, sending her friend into great gales of laughter.
