A Perfect Plan

9. A Perfect Plan

“A calling?” Hermione asked her revision notes forgotten to the side. Harry had found his friends in the library, Hermione busily going through her text book and Ron almost asleep next to her.

She got up and disappeared into a row with book leaving Ron to groan.

“Great mate, give her something more to torture me with! Honestly I have a headache and I think I am going to be sick if she cites one more way to vary a cleaning charm.”

Harry snorted softly shaking his head.

“Just ask her Ron.” When the redhead frowned Harry leaned back. “If she wants to go out with you.”

Ron blushed. “Am I that obvious?”

Harry nodded but they were interrupted when Hermione returned a thick book in her hands. Placing it on the table she began to leave through it obviously searching for something. Finally she looked up, nodding.

“I knew it was covered in Hogwarts, a history.”

“How come?” Harry asked wondering why something like that would be in a book about the history of the castle.

Hermione huffed. “If any of you had actually taken a look at this book as I advised several times in the last years, you would know that Godric Gryffindor experienced a calling just before the beginning of the Goblin War.”

Ron was staring outside the window but Harry was now interested.

“With whom?”

“Salazar Slytherin.”

Baffled Harry stared at is friend trying to understand that.

“But they hated each other.”

“That's not the point, a calling does not care if you hate the wizard who you are drawn to nor does it care if you want it or not.”

“I don't understand,” Harry admitted.

Hermione sighed. “Let me try to explain it Harry. Do you know the concept of soul mates?” When Harry nodded slowly she smiled. “Romantic muggles believe that there is one person in the world who they are destined to share their life with because their soul in completing their own. Now what is the difference between you and a muggle?”

Feeling like in one of his classes Harry shrugged. Hermione huffed.

“Magic Harry, that is something nobody could ever take away from you. Other than killing you of course. In a calling your magic reaches out to find the one magic in the world who completes it.”

“Can you resist it?” Harry asked the beginning of a headache forming behind his temples.

“Of course you can for a while but I cannot think of a reason why a wizard would want that. It strengthens your magic considerably. Usually it only happens in times of great despair.”

When Harry was silent she closed the book silently.

“Why do you want to know?”

Harry shrugged, his thoughts already racing around the concept of a calling. He had been honest though- he would rather die than spent the rest of his life with Snape, of all people. Even Draco would have been easier to somehow endure but the sour potion master who harboured nothing but hate for him.

Without another word Harry rose from his chair, ignoring Hermione and walked out of the library. He needed time to think, space to breath and so he left the castle and walked into the direction of the lake.

Rain was pouring down from the sky and he did not wear a coat but the gushy wind managed to clear his mind quiet effectively. It was all so unfair, the way everybody made decisions about his life without even deeming it necessary to inform him.

He stood there forever while his eyes changed their colour- from the greenest of green to scarlet red an then back to green.

When he walked back into the direction of school he ignored students who greeted him, his stony face set in determination.

This was the perfect opportunity he had been waiting for. They would all pay- Snape who had dared to betray him, Harry who so foolishly tapped into his trap and Dumbledore who had no idea that in the guise of the boy-who-lived Lord Voldemort was marching up the stairs into the great hall.

*walks away humming a tune*
