The Truth

Chapter 9 – The Truth

Well, hello
You say you want to taste the truth
Just swallow it down
And it will all be over soon
Don’t try to fight
Just listen to the sound of my voice
I know you want to run, baby
But you really don’t have the choice

The Truth – Alex Band

Hospital Wing

Hermione sighed loudly for the third time since Madame Pomfrey had entered her office. Honestly, this was ridiculous. Well, maybe not that ridiculous. She couldn’t do magic, and that hurt. So much so that the very thought of it was overwhelming. And because it was overwhelming, she refused to dwell on it for any longer than necessary. What was ridiculous though, was the amount of research she still had to get done for Harry so that the search and destroy mission could begin once school let out for the Christmas Hols.

Her jailer, sorry, Madame Pomfrey refused to allow her to do anything other than convalesce in the bed. She had run test after test, spell after spell, and the only thing that was clear was that Hermione’s magic had been somehow subdued. No one dared used the word gone when speaking about her magic.

Draco had been curiously absent since he had abandoned her to the care of the school Medi-Witch. That was another thing she tried not to think about too much. In the few short weeks that had passed she had come to rely on him much more than she should. She knew that Harry had questions for her, but how to explain when she didn’t understand it herself? Perhaps it had to do with how vulnerable she had been feeling ever since Nott and Goyle had attacked her and then had attempted rape.

Draco had been the one to save her from a fate she would have considered worse than death. Perhaps her reliance upon him stemmed from that. Yet that thought, while true was not the entire reason she wanted him near her. With a jolt, Hermione realized she actually enjoyed spending time with him.

He was as much into learning and debating wizarding laws, culture and life in general as she was. It was mental stimulation she certainly did not get from Harry and Ron, or anyone else for that matter. Though she often wished she could pick at Professor Snape’s brain as she felt he too would be an interesting person to debate with. Draco was simply the counterpoint to her point in the smarts department.

There was also no denying his attractiveness. He was tall, lean, but muscular leading her to think that all those years of Quidditch had certainly been good to him. His eyes, once a cold, menacing form of gray ice, were often times a pool of silver liquid she could drown in if she stared long enough. But it was his arms that often captured her thoughts. In them she was safe, whole, strong, and the last few mornings she had woken up with the need to get closer to him. Physically closer to him. She blushed as her thoughts began to wander in a forbidden direction.

The biggest change in him though was his acceptance of her and all of Dumbledore’s Army. It was strange not hearing insults pass from his lips. Hermione sensed though that there were times when he held back from offering his thoughts. There were moments she knew he wanted to speak his mind, and she wondered if there was some sort of mistaken fear that he would be kicked out, left out in the cold with no protection and no way to save himself.

She could not see him ever admitting that, nor did she think he would want someone to point it out to him, but she added getting him to open up and talk to her onto her ever-expanding list of things to do. Hermione sighed loudly for the fourth time. Perhaps her list wouldn’t be so long if she could get out of here and start working on solutions!

The sound of approaching footsteps caused her to turn her head towards the doorway and she smiled when she saw Professor Dumbledore make his way over to her.

“Good morning, Professor,” She knew the cheerfulness in her voice rang false, but if the Headmaster noticed he did not say anything. A small smile graced his aging features as he returned her greeting and asked how she was feeling.

“I’m doing as well as can be expected, Sir.” Dumbledore reached out to pat her hand in a fatherly manner then accio’d a chair so that he could sit at her bedside.

“Madame Pomfrey tells me that you are eager to leave so that you may return to your studies. You will be released after I speak with you. However, I find that allowing you to go to class while unable to perform magic is not safe.”

“But, Sir –,” she tried to interrupt.

“You are not being banned from Hogwarts, Ms. Granger. Instead you will be given course work from your teachers that you will work on independently. Obviously you cannot do any of the practical lessons at this time, but you will still need to learn the theoretical side of magic.” She nodded her understanding and was relieved that she would not be sent away from her beloved school.

“However that is not what I have come to speak to you about. Professor Snape has explained to me what transpired two weeks ago, Mr. Malfoy has also spoken with me in regards to it. You have made poor error in judgment by not speaking up. You could have died, Ms. Granger, and as Head Girl you know the rules better than anyone. Professor Snape is already working on finding the antidote, and by not speaking up you have cost him two precious weeks of research. Therefore I must take fifty points from Gryffindor and another fifty from Slytherin, Mr. Malfoy should have spoken up as well.”

Silently, Hermione nodded, as she knew she was wrong. She attempted to speak, to apologize, but Dumbledore spoke over her.

“There is also one other thing I must tell you, Hermione, I pray you listen well.” Dumbledore took a deep breath and then began.

“Long before the Dark Ages, before Merlin and Morganna, when magic was embraced by Muggle and Wizard alike, there was a seer. A woman of no known parentage, and no background. She was a healer, some said. Others swore she cursed them. But those who heard her speak, revered her. Her name was Isolde, and she was what you would consider a fortuneteller today.

“She would make random prophecies around villages, but there was one that she always repeated. So familiar did those around her come to be with this particular prophecy that it has been passed down by word of mouth ever since. This is what she spoke,

A thousand years to pass
And another thousand more
Darkness shall fall across the land
There comes a man of Death and War

Into the Light
An Element of Gold
Guardian of Right
Her future has been foretold

Fire and Earth
Water and Air
She must meet her fate
Else we meet despair

You see, Ms. Granger, what has been kept from you is that during the summer solstice of your 18th year you will come into your powers as an Elemental.” Dumbledore stopped speaking. Hermione was silent, processing all that the Headmaster had said.

“But, Sir, I don’t –,” Hermione was interrupted as Harry entered the room.

“Just consider what I have said, Ms. Granger, we will talk more at a later time. Your friends are concerned for you.” With a nod towards Harry, Professor Dumbledore made his way out of the hospital wing.

Harry reached her bedside and before she could speak he had gathered her up into a tight hug.

“Damn it, Hermione, why didn’t you come to me?” His words were muffled as he held his friend close. Placing his hand on her upper arms he eased her back and frowned. “And don’t say it’s because I have too much to worry about as it is.”

Hermione’s eyes welled up with tears. Harry saw and yanked her back into a hug, “Stubborn, witch, just promise you’ll never keep anything from me again. I’d rather hear it from you than Snape and Malfoy any day.”

She sniffled and nodded. “Let’s get Ron and head back to my dorm, I need to fill you both in on what Professor Dumbledore just told me.”

Blaise Zabini sat in the library working on an Ancient Runes essay. His mind however was not on his schoolwork. A letter from his sister was practically burning a hole in the pocket of his robes, but he had not wanted to open it at breakfast. There was no telling who would try to grab it or read over his shoulder.

Glancing around he realized that he was finally alone in the far corner of the library. Pulling out the note he unfolded it and quickly scanned the contents. When he finished a knot of fear had formed in his gut.

His mother was sending Rodolphus LeStrange to bring Sylvia to England for Christmas.

Author's Note

HG4EVA - Thank you for the awesome compliment! As a writer I'm sure you know how good it feels to have your stories really get the reader involved! (I'm still dreading the end of Struggling Through New Beginnings even though I know there's a sequal....I just love the amazing amount of personal growth that each character is going through!)

Snape was actually a bit difficult for me to write properly.....I have to thank Snapes_Goddess for her input on that. Now I just can't wait to here your thoughts on this newest chapter!

BLUE ARTEMIS - Thank you!! The story will always be updated first here, though I am trying to catch up on GE as well! I love the Malfoys..except Narcissa...and Draco is obviously a favorite of mine! =)

DREAMWEAVER - No Snape was definitely not pleased with either of them. He knows how smart Hermione is, and how stubborn (funny but she is a bit like him, isn't she?) so it pisses him off that she would take such a stupid risk, even though he admires her strengh. (Not that he's tell her that). Your description of Hermione was spot on though! I was hoping that would come through!

Snape wanted Draco present when he told Harry abotu Mione's predicament. He knows that Harry is aware of Draco and Hermione spending time together so he felt Draco's presence would keep Harry's hatred of Snape from clouding his judgement. There will be another chance for Draco and Snape to talk a little further down the road.

Hooray for Luna and Harry...LOL That was definitely one hell of a favor to ask! And I'm glad you enjoyed it! So what do you think of Hermione's 'fate'?
