Chapter 9- Reality

Things were really starting to come together for Severus Snape and for the first time in his life he was not miserable. He had the position of his dreams, had his past worked out, people that he could actually trust and not feel used, and as a bonus, he had a sweet witch that agreed to spend the rest of her life with him. It really could not get much better than this. There would only be just a few moments to come in his life that would be greater than this moment right now, and he looked forward to those days as a child does Christmas.

Now that he and his angel were to be married, he wanted to share the news with his closest friend, Minerva, for he knew that she would be thrilled. She had been the one to encourage him to propose to Hermione in the first place, so it would only be fair if she were the first one told. After his last batch of classes that day, he made his way up to the Headmistress’s office to see if she could spare a moment to chat. The walk to Minerva’s office was a long one, so he took it at a brisk pace to make the trek shorter. Once he was at the stone gargoyle, he gave the password and was lifted up the stairs to her door. He rapped lightly and waited patiently. When Minerva appeared at the door to admit him, she looked flustered; Severus attributed it to just being another day’s duties.

“To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Well, as we have a bit before dinner, Minerva, I thought that we might have a drink and converse before our evening begins. Besides, you look like you could use some alcohol at the moment. Did you have a difficult day?” Severus strode in and promptly walked to her liquor cabinet. Finding the strongest Scotch, he poured them both a couple of fingers, and then walked over to the desk. She had half of hers drank before he had even touched his glass.

“Difficult does not quite describe my day. Merlin, Sev, it seems like the students these days are being yanked up instead of being raised properly. Some of them have no sense at all! I feel like giving our most unruly ones a good whack on arse if I thought it would do any good.” She began to rub at her temples to assuage the migraine that had taken residence in her.

“I can commiserate with you on that. Sometimes I just want to hex the dunderheads, but alas, I cannot, which is why I have a nice healthy store of Firewhisky to ease the pain. It also helps that I have a lovely witch at my side that eases my stress levels.”

“Speaking of which, did you ever get around to proposing to her, my boy? If you have not, you might want to.”

“Relax, Minerva, I already asked. In fact, as of last night, I am officially off the market, not that anyone else would have me, mind you. You should have seen her face once she had my ring on her finger; she lit up like the sun. I don’t think that I have had a happier moment in my life.”

“I am pleased that you have someone to share your life with now. Didn’t I tell you that she loved you? I could see it written all over her. So, have you figured out the details of when you are going to get married, and how you and she are going to tell everyone?”

“No, we have not, I figure we have plenty of time to decide, though the announcement of our engagement must happen fairly soon, lest she think that I am ashamed of her. I can’t wait to see the look on Weasley’s face when he finds out that the ‘greasy git’ got his girl.”

“Maybe you and Hermione could have a small party to make the announcement, that way everyone will know at once. The look on his face should be priceless; I would like to see it.”

“I am surprised at you, Minnie. I thought that you loved the golden trio.”

“Oh, I do, but let’s face it, Ron was a sweet boy, but he was never meant for our Hermione. Their chemistry was meant for lifelong friendship and nothing more, which is why it caught me off guard when they decided to pursue a relationship. I knew it was a mistake then, but I had hoped that one or both of them would realize it before it was too late. When they were betrothed, I thought that it would end badly and I had met with Hermione to discourage her from entering that unholy union. She thanked me for my opinion and left, things were not the same between us after that, well until they split; I was one of the first that she came to apologise to. I was appalled by Mr. Weasley’s behaviour, but it did not shock me; I knew that he would try to tarnish her image.”

“I always knew that they were not right for each other, and I had my own way of trying to talk to her. I sent her a letter shortly before she married the fool.” He watched her face for signs of anger, but there were none, thank Merlin for that. They continued talking for awhile longer before he made his excuses to leave.

In the wee hours of the morning when Hermione arrived home, Severus was sitting at his desk grading papers. She yawned widely, and then gave him a small smile before sidling up to him. When she rested her chin on his strong shoulder, he looked up at her to greet her with a kiss. His lips had barely brushed hers when she sighed and slid her tongue along his bottom lip, inviting him into her mouth. They stayed locked in their intimate embrace for several moments before breaking apart.

“Good even, love. Did you have a good night?”

“Of course, I always have a good time at the club. What about you? Have you spent all this time grading, or did you get to do anything else?”

“Other than patrol and grading, I have not done much, though I did visit with our dear Minerva; she and I talked and had a drink. I hope that you do not mind, but I informed her of our impending nuptials. She is pleased and sends along her congratulations. So, have you given any thought to when we should tell everyone, as well as a wedding date?”

“I just love Minnie, she is such a wonderful friend. I thought that we should get everyone together and tell them that way, maybe under the guise of a party. If we did it this way, it would all be over within a couple of hours, and then we could proceed to other things. As for a wedding date, how about Christmas? I know that is fairly soon, but there really is no need to draw out our engagement; we already know what we want from each other, so I do not see the point in waiting.”

“Minnie and I had the idea of telling everyone at once, it will take less time that way. I agree with your idea to get married on Christmas. The sooner we can start our lives together, the better it will be, though I can only think of one problem.”

“And what’s that, Sev?”

“With a rushed wedding such as this, they may think that we are marrying because you are pregnant, and even though we both know that is not the case, it will not stop the others from gossiping.”

“Sev, when have you or I ever cared what other people thought of us or our motives? It is not their business.”

The days that followed the engagement party invitations flew by, and before anyone knew it, the night had arrived. Hermione and Severus had chosen to have a private party in Hermione’s old flat above The Witching Hour. The Weasley’s, Ginny and Harry, Kingsley and Miriam, Minerva, as well as Hermione’s parents filtered in a little at a time, until everyone was present. Everyone was mingling, when Hermione cleared her throat and addressed all present.

“Thank you all for coming this evening; I have a very important announcement to make, and am pleased to share it with all of you. Many of you know that Severus and I have been together for over a year now, and we have finally decided to marry.” Severus was standing at her side and looking at her with obvious affection in his eyes as she spoke. He always knew that she had a commanding presence to her that made others listen.

“’Mione, when are you and Sev going to ‘tie the knot’?” Said Ginny.

“This Christmas, and you are all invited to share our special day with us.”

Many gasps went about the room, whilst the others stared at them like they were covered in boils. Hermione was beginning to get nervous, when Severus took her hand in his to reassure her that everything would be okay. A male in the back was talking loudly and Severus looked for the source of the interruption. His eyes immediately fell on Weasel; there was going to be trouble, he could smell it. The boy made his way to the front with an evil glare on his face, and then stood directly in front of Hermione and Severus.

“You decided to marry the greasy bastard then, didn’t you? I bet you were even seeing him whilst we were married, weren’t you, you little whore?! That git is the reason we divorced, and now you are going to be with him. He’s probably only marrying you because you got knocked up by him...”

Instead of speaking, an enraged Severus Snape hit Ron in the face so hard that he flew backwards ten feet. Ron, looking stunned, rose unsteadily to his feet, and then proceeded to try to hex Severus. The hex ceased to exist when Severus raised his hand. Ron stood there with pure hate in his eyes as Severus began to speak.

“How dare you speak to my fiancée in such a manner, you fucking loser! You are just mad that she had enough sense to leave your arse when you illustrated the fact that you truly have no brains.” Severus began laughing as he spoke his next words. “You actually think that you can harm me, little boy? Remember Weasel, I was a Death Eater, and I took on people like you for fun and sport. You would not stand a chance against me in a duel, you pathetic excuse for a human being. You were not invited to this gathering, and as such, get out!”

After Severus finished speaking, there were quite a few people to applaud him, then Harry bodily removed his former friend from what was supposed to be a celebration. Instead of the party being about Hermione and Severus, it ended up being about Ron.

Many of her friends and family were angry with the event that had taken place. They were not upset about the fact that their Hermione was marrying the former ‘greasy git’, instead, they were mad that Ron had the gall to crash the engagement party, perform a character assassination on Hermione, and then attack Severus. Sure, many of them were not fond of the man, but no one deserved to be treated in such a manner. They could not understand what had gotten into Ron, he used to be such a nice guy, but this new person was someone they did not recognize.

Later that night after everyone left, Hermione and Severus curled up in their bed and began to reflect on their day. They thought there would be some to not approve of their union, but that was not the case; they had overwhelming support from their family and friends, which was surprising to say the least. However, as pleasant of a reaction they received, no one expected Ron to outright physically attack Severus, though it was pretty funny when Ron got exactly what he deserved. Hermione had tried her hardest not to laugh when Severus humiliated Ron. Now the Weasel knew how she had felt when he tried to ruin her. Tonight’s events only served as one more example of the point: you get what you give.

It could be said in the future that Ron only acted like a prat because he could not accept the consequences of his actions, or that he was jealous, or even the fact that Hermione had officially moved on and he would never have a chance to make things right between them, but whatever the case, it would not matter. One day in the future, Ron would look on all that he had done and know that he had forfeited his chance, and that it was just a little too late.
