~Chapter Nine: Of Wisdom and Foolishness~
Isis wiled away the day by playing chess with Sirius who had a very woebegone set. “I play all the time against James and he’s a match for Arthur Weasley.”
“You know the Weasley’s?” Isis asked.
“Yeah, Molly and I are related by marriage and then she married Arthur… so yes. I know them. How do you know them?”
“Oh,” Isis blushed. “Arthur helped me and mom find a muggle house that we can go to when mom gets everything cleared up in the states.”
“So things are pretty bad over there then?”
“Yes. Mom has to meet with parliament and she’s trying to work things out with the muggle president so that elves are under federal protection, but it’s a risk for exposure if we try to obtain constitutional rights.
Sirius nodded. “It’s the same here. I wish we didn’t have to hide the way that we do. I mean witches and wizards born to muggles reveal our world to their families, what’s a few more people knowing?”
“That’s just the thing Sirius, it’s not just a few people. It’s a few million people knowing about our world. The person himself is intelligent, but groups of people are stupid and easy to control.”
Sirius looked at her intently. There was a something dignified in her voice now. Sirius genuinely thought that Isis would be a great ruler.
Isis shock her head, “Let’s not talk about politics. I’d rather not discuss it with you.”
“You’re going to be the queen Isis.” Sirius said. “Don’t you talk about theses things anyway?”
“I’m not going to be the queen.” Isis said.
Sirius looked surprised. “Why not?”
“I’m not smart enough Sirius. My mother and father knew things that I could only wish for. I didn’t even have the foresight to see that my actions were hurting my family and my country. My bad decisions killed my father and put my home, my country, and my people at risk Sirius. I’m not worthy of the throne. Besides, I don’t want that kind of power. I haven’t done anything to earn it.”
“You can’t earn that kind of power Isis. It’s either your blessing or your curse. Isis you have the wisdom you just need to be confident and apply what you know. Your people will need you.”
Isis just sighed and looked down at the chess set. “Knight to E 5.” She commanded dully.
Sirius looked at her sympathetically. “Isis you’re very intelligent. You just lack the confidence.”
Isis sighed again. “It’s your move.”
Sirius reached for her hand. “Isis…”
“It’s your move.” She repeated.
Sirius let go of her hand and moved.
In the end Isis won, but she stayed moody all day. After dinner she waited in the entrance hall, but Severus just walked past arm in arm with Bellatrix Black. Isis frowned slightly, but decided to wait a bit longer.
Isis kept waiting. She waited for almost two hours before Sirius came down to the entrance hall.
“Isis, I don’t think he’s coming for your walk.”
Isis’s eyes misted, “He walked down with Bellatrix.”
“Black?” Sirius asked venomously.
Isis nodded.
Sirius sighed. “I’ll talk to Bella in the morning.”
“Why?” Isis asked.
“Why not?”
“Sirius I don’t care how distant a relation she is, don’t embarrass me like that.”
“She’s my cousin.” Sirius lifted Isis’s chin with his forefinger. “Isis I care about you. I care about you very much. If Severus is cheating on you with Bella…”
Isis moved away from Sirius. “He’s not cheating. I’m sure he has a very good reason for not coming for our walk.”
“Isis don’t fool yourself.”
“He said he cares about me.”
Sirius walked toward her. “I care about you too.”
“I’m not going to cheat on him.”
“Isis.”
“No Sirius.”
Sirius took Isis’s face in both hands. “Isis you drive me crazy I really like you. If you would just give me a chance I would never bother you again. Please Isis. Please give me a chance.”
Isis moved away. “Sirius, you are not my boyfriend, Severus is. I want to be with him. You still don’t understand that, I want him even though I like you. I love him!”
“No Isis. You’re afraid of him. You’re afraid of his judgment, afraid of his anger, afraid of everything about him. That’s not love Isis.”
“Then what is love Sirius? The pulsing of blood to a muscle?”
“Love is something I have never known with a woman, but Heloise told Alleviant that love was her sacrifice for his well-being. What has he sacrificed for you?”
Isis blinked. “I’m sure he gave up something for me. However I don’t expect him to yet. I haven’t given up anything for him yet.”
“You’re giving up on yourself. No one else would wait two hours for a date that her boyfriend had forgotten. No one else would let her boyfriend tell her that she’s not smart enough to play chess with him. No one else would stand for what he says to you. You stood up for Lily, now you need to stand up for yourself Isis.”
“You are so damn arrogant Sirius. Why can’t you understand that I’m in love?”
“Because I don’t believe you are in love!”
Isis stalked away. “Just leave me Sirius, just leave me alone.”
Sirius considered leaving her alone for about a second, but he knew better then to think that Severus would treat Isis half as well as she deserved.
