She was waiting for him in his quarters. Before leaving off, he had pointed out that the dungeons had the only decent bathtub in Hogwarts, and that she might as well make use of it. Which had been an excellent idea, she thought now, as she yawned and stretched out in his bathrobe, pleasantly tired after the hot bath.

An exhausted Severus came in and sat down on an armchair opposite her. “Well. I only just finished interrogating Remus…”

“Not as you interrogated me, I hope.”

“Not quite,” half-smiled Snape. “It wasn’t too difficult. The man’s completely defeated, he just collapsed and told us everything as soon as we asked. Apparently, Voldemort’s plan was to sow suspicion in the Ministry, and at Hogwarts, about my having really left the Death Eaters. So he arranged it so that you would turn up at Hogwarts claiming to have seen me” – here his voice dropped – “and to have been raped by me at a recent Revel. Even if Dumbledore explained it away as somebody using polyjuice, that would have been enough to cast serious doubt on my loyalties at the Ministry. Particularly, given my past history. Divide and vanquish, you see.”

“What about Remus? He… he said he had become a Death Eater because he loved me.”

Snape’s face grew dark with anger. “Right. He loved you. And he just stood by while you were brutalized at the Revel. Oh yes, he was there too. The choking reaction you had wasn’t only a resistance to my questioning, but also the result of a selective forgetfulness charm which the Death Eaters cast on you. Just in case you happened to notice something out of place. Of course, what they didn’t count on was that you´d repress having seen me, or that I’d try to access your repressed memories. That’s why Remus was so opposed to the whole thing – he was afraid of your reaction if forced to break the forgetfulness charm, and of what you might say.”

He looked down at his own hands. “That’s what I find unforgivable. That he claimed to love you and yet allowed you to be put through all that – horror.” He grimaced in distaste. “I suppose he thought that was the price to be paid to get you. Fool. If he thought Voldemort would have kept his part of the deal…”

“He’s had a pretty terrible life himself,” murmured Hermione. “He must have been very desperate.”

“Well, I suppose he really loves you, in a horribly deluded way. People do some very stupid things for love.” He looked up at her, and she blushed.

“So what happens now?”

“Oh, he’s definitely going to Azkaban. Dumbledore is going to put in a good word for him at the Ministry, asking them to consider all the mitigating factors – he did help Potter, after all. But he’s bound to stay in there for a long time.”

She turned and looked away into the fire. “And us?”

“What do you want to happen?” he asked very quietly.

“I… I want this shame to go away. Now you know how I feel about you, I can’t stand this shame, every time you look at me. I feel so ridiculous.”

“Why ever would you feel ridiculous, Hermione? You have nothing to be ashamed of. You have fought bravely, and won. You have withstood things which not many people would be able to. And all this out of love, with no selfish expectations. You have nothing but reasons to be proud of yourself.” He stood up and moved towards her. “Any man would be extremely proud to be with you, Hermione.” He paused. “I would.”

She looked up at him and stretched out her hand for him to hold, not saying one word. one one long moment, they stayed so, he holding her hand, she gazing at him, deep in thought.

“Hermione…” he began then, dubiously. “After all that has happened, I know I can’t expect…”

“Severus,” she interrupted him. “Don’t bother. Don’t apologize. I know how you are. I know you have little scruples to do what you think must be done. And I know too how bad you feel about it, and about the fact that at some level you enjoy being cruel. That’s the way you are, and I accept it. Gods forgive me, it turns me on. As you well know. I like it.” She smiled twistedly. “I like it that you are a calculating bastard who would sell his mother if need be.”

He stared at her in disbelief. Then quickly recovered his composure and smirked back: “My mother’s a real bitch. She would deserve it.”

“Well, no need to introduce me to her then…” retorted Hermione, but already Snape had grabbed her by the shoulders and hungrily pressed his mouth to hers. Then he drew back and smiled, stroking her hair.

“The first woman who doesn’t want me to introduce her to my mother. I think I’m falling in love.”

“Careful, Snape. Was that a display of affection?”

Roughly, he gathered her up in her arms and growled into her ear: “Never mind. Love or no love, that doesn’t change what I intend to do to you at all.” He carried her into the bedroom and dropped her unceremoniously on the bed. “Now what would you like me to do to you, my dear?”

“Why don’t you make me tell you?”

AUTHOR’S NOTE
For those readers who had been promised a smutty ending: a PWP, all-smut sequel – The Training of Hermione – is forthcoming this week. I felt that more smut simply wasn’t justified at this point in the story – I didn’t want to overload the plot. Smut for smut’s sake, by all means.

Oh. And I do like Lupin, a lot. I just thought it curious that nobody seemed to think it possible that he could have a dark side. I\'ll be kinder to him in the future - and he will probably be reappearing in the PWP. Cheers.
