Synopsis: This story takes place after my previous story “The Lion and The Serpent”. In this story Harry and Draco are on their way back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when they are ambushed by Death Eaters, leaving Draco half dead. So distraught over Draco’s possible death Harry wishes he was never born . . . but will his wish actually come true?
Before Harry even had a chance to fall back into bed to think about all he had just seen, something struck Harry in his right shoulder, forcing him to stumble forward, almost to the floor.
“Hiya Harry!”
Turning around with his wand in hand, Harry saw the next spirit before him. Twice as tall as a normal man and five times as wide; the form of Hagrid stood in Harry’s dormitory.
“Hope I didn’ frighten yeh . . .” said the spirit with a great smile.
“No, I was just a bit surprised is all” Harry replied.
“Well then, we best be goin Harry.”
“Where are you going to take me?”
“To show you the way of things as they are now”
“But, I already know what happened today,” Harry declared.
The spirit only laughed joyfully at this statement, as if Harry said a very funny joke.
“No Harry, that was yesterday. It’s midnight . . .”
Looking down at his watch, Harry saw that it was true. It was still midnight, right on the dot.
“How . . .”
“We froze time,” the spirit interrupted, “that way no one will be able to interfere in our work, and nothing else can happen to change the frames that come next.”
“But, why are you all showing me these things? Who sent you in the first place? And most of all how do I know this isn’t some plan to kill me in the end?” Harry asked, finally voicing his fears.
“Now Harry if we were hear to kill yeh you’d already be dead. And as for who summoned us, I promise you, the Phoenix means you no ill will.”
“The Phoenix!?!”
The spirit shook his head, regretting everything he had just said.
“Who or What is the Phoenix?” Harry pressed with urgency.
“That you will learn all too soon! Now let’s begin!”
As these words were said, the world around Harry and the spirit faded, like the changing scenes in a movie. Then, out of nowhere, Harry found himself back at the Burrow. Mrs. Weasley was washing the dishes in the dark, crying as she scrubbed the dishes clean. Harry walked over to Mrs. Weasley expecting to comfort her, only to have his hand pass through her. Once again, Harry was forced to watch, and not interact. Suddenly, the light came on, startling Mrs. Weasley, making her drop the plate in her hands.
“Come to bed, now. You’re not going to do anyone any good exhausting yourself!” Mr. Weasley said.
Mrs. Weasley wiped a few tears from her face, as she began to pick up the broken pieces on the floor. Mr. Weasley walked over and pulled her off the floor and into his arms.
“Oh Arthur! What’s going to happen to Draco?”
“Don’t worry Molly; I’m sure somehow things will be okay in the end” Mr. Weasley said as he rubbed his hands over her back.
“I wish Dumbledore let Harry come back here instead of going back to Hogwarts alone. I can only imagine what he’s going through” Mrs. Weasley sobbed.
“If only she knew” Harry whispered to himself.
“She love’s yeh very much doesn’t she Harry?” the spirit asked.
“She’s the closest thing I have to a mother.”
Mrs. Weasley had always treated him just like any of her own children, and it was obvious that she loved him just as much.
“Come now Harry, there is still more to see” the spirit declared.
The spirit took Harry into the living room, where Ron and Hermione sat in silence. Hermione had clearly been crying not too long ago and Ron was clearly distressed.
“At least he never became a Death Eater like his dad” Ron declared as he tried to hide his face from Hermione.
“It still amazes me sometimes. I never expected Draco to ever do anything like that” Hermione replied, wiping away a fresh tear.
“I guess Harry really can do anything” Hermione said, which made her smile, but only for a moment.
“I wish there was something we could do. I can’t stand just sitting here doing nothing while one of my best mates is dying at St. Mungo’s while another is back at Hogwarts going through who knows what” Ron spat.
Ron began to pace and forth as Hermiontchetched him, trying to stop herself from crying again. Harry looked away, no longer able to watch them as they suffered. It seemed almost inhuman to Harry, that he was forced to watch his friends like this and not be able to do something about it. As if reading Harry’s thoughts, the spirit pulled them away from the scene into another. Immediately, as Harry saw the world rematerialized before him He saw that he was now back at St. Mungo’s.
“Why are we here?!?”
“Look . . .” the spirit said, pointing to a healer down the hallway.
The healer was wearing a surgical mask, and walking towards Draco’s room. Something about the healer was off, something Harry couldn’t explain only feel. Before the spirit had a chance to say anything, Harry ran after the healer, as Harry saw him enter, D’s r’s room. Jumping through the door, Harry realized what was off; the skull on his forearm told Harry everything he needed to know. The Death Eater pulled out a wand as he walked over to Malfoy’s bedside, making Harry do the same. Then as Harry tried to stand between Draco and the Death Eater, Harry painfully remembered that he couldn’t do a thing to stop what was happening.
“AVADA KEDAVRA!!!” the Death Eater yelled, bringing down his wand.
The curse hit Draco, right in the chest, killing him in his unconsciousness.
“NO!!!” Harry yelled as he saw his lover die.
In anguish, Harry cried out, as he felt a part of himself die. He promised Draco, that he would always protect him, and now he was dead. Instantly the spirit appeared behind Harry and dragged him from the scene, back to his dormitory.
“WHY? WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE?” Harry yelled.
“All the signs indicate. . .”
“The signs? READ ME THE SIGNS! TELL ME MY FORTUNE!” Harry yelled, as he began to throw things at the spirit, which went right through him.
“There’s still a chance to save him!” said the spirit calmly.
“HOW? HOW CAN I SAVE HIM?”
“Saving Draco Malfoy is not in our hands, Harry. It’s in yours . . .”
