Chapter Eight
Two months later…
Lucius watched from the shadows as his Hermione strolled the gardens with one of the most unusual young women he had ever had the chance to make the acquaintance of. Luna Lovegood, a dreamy little witch with more intelligence than anyone gave her credit for having, arrived bright and early that morning. Though why she would, Lucius had yet to find out. Hermione had been so happy to have one of her friends come to visit that he hadn’t been given the chance to ask anything about her.
True, he remembered the young witch being held at his manor as a prisoner along with the wand maker and several others, but it wasn’t as if they had been given the chance to have a civil tea and conversation. It had been war, not a social gathering. As a result, he knew she was a stronger witch than most, but that was about all.

“He’s watching us,” Luna said casually as she sat down next to Hermione.
She nodded. “I think it has something to do with the fact that you are the only visitor that I’ve had other than Headmaster Snape since I’ve been here.”
“Yes, there is that,” she sighed. “I thought he might have something more to do with the fact that it was the beginning of the Scottish Crossbill’s mating season.”
Hermione frowned as she whispered, “That’s a real bird.”
Luna laughed airily as she said, “Of course it is.”
“But how do you know about them?”
“Gnargles eat their eggs and young, but the Crossbills are a very protective lot. So much so that I have to wonder why the gnargles bother them at all.”
“Gnargles,” Hermione replied. “I should have known.” Taking a deep breath, she asked, “So tell me what’s happening back at school. I miss everyone so much. I’ve written to both Ron and Harry, but neither one has written back to me.”
“Everyone is grand,” she answered. “Harry and Ginny broke up, but they’re both fine with that. She’s dating Neville and Harry is dating someone else. Though don’t ask me whom. All I know is that they are blonde. A blond that seems to shed quite a bit and likes leaving love bruises on his neck.”
Hermione chuckled at that. “And how is Ron?”
“Ron is as he always is—excellent at chess and totally without thought at the same time.” She sighed heavily. “And to think it is said nothing can exist in a vacuum.” Luna paused and added, “He’s dating Padma now, but last week it was someone else. He can’t seem to make up his mind.”
“He was that way before I left,” Hermione said. “He proposed marriage to Salt…”
“Pepper,” Luna correct thoughtlessly.
“Whatever—he actually proposed to her in the common room!”
She nodded. “So I heard at the time. Pepper turned him down flat after he said that the only reasons why he was asking her were because he wanted someone to take care of him, meaning feed him and take care of his house and sexual needs.”
“That idiot,” she muttered. “He’ll never learn…”
A large warm hand slipped over her shoulder, calling attention to Lucius standing next to her. She looked up at him, finding him watching her intensely.
“The house elves have prepared a lovely picnic that is to be served over at the rose garden,” he murmured. “Violet!” A tiny house elf popped over. “Please escort Miss Lovegood to where the picnic is?” He looked over to Luna. “We’ll be joining you shortly.”
Within seconds Luna was taken over by the elf. Lucius sat down next to her and waited. It didn’t take long for her to allow her temper to show.
“That idiot,” she muttered. “And absolute fool! I bet he saw me no better than a brood mare. Thank Merlin I had the good sense that I did or I might have ended up his keeper!” She let out a long breath, looking at him. “What’s for lunch?”
“I’ll tell you once you explain to me what a gnargle is.”
She stood up. “I would if they existed.”
“Ahh.”
Hermione laughed quietly. “Don’t let her fool you, Lucius. Gnargles aside, she’s a Ravenclaw for a reason.”
Lucius walked along side of her as they went over to where the outdoor meal was being served. Absently he watched as she glided without effort. This tended to amaze him, as it hadn’t been all that long ago that she was one to stride or march. Now she glided, almost drifted without effort. She reached out and took his hand, lacing her fingers with hiss.
“Your friends should come to visit,” he muttered.
“They’re busy,” she murmured. “But…” She stopped, making him do so as well. “But given the fact that Harry is sleeping with your son, the least he could do is drop in and…”
“What was that?” he asked sharply.
“Harry is having sex with Draco.”
He leaned in closer so that his nose was touching hers. “I would ask how you knew that, my imp, but I know better.”
“Actually, I’m just guessing at the moment. Draco has been so relaxed for the last five weeks and hearing that Harry is dating a blonde that likes to mark him…” She smiled slowly. “If I’m correct in my assessment, Harry should be grateful Draco hasn’t taken it into his head to piss on him.” She stopped him from talking with a casual touch on his shoulder. “I know. Some people get off on such, though why is a mystery.”
He took her hand within his saying, “I had the elves make your favorite.”
He pressed it into the crook of his arm and accompanied her the rest of the way over to where the meal was set out. And sitting quietly at the table, Luna was quietly enjoying the sun. Hermione figured she was more than likely on the lookout for gnargles raiding nests.
It was on her way out that Lucius pulled Luna aside and handed her an envelope. “If you could please pass on these letters to Hermione’s friends? She’s been here for two months and she has only received one visitor her own age. She’s…lonely.”
Luna looked to the envelopes and then to him once more. With a small nod she turned to leave, but stopped and looked over to him. “It was very difficult coming here.” She looked around. “I thought Hermione would have the same difficulty.”
“She did, at first,” he murmured.
She nodded. “I remember my time here clearly. It was a nightmare…”
“I’m well aware…”
“Please,” she said, her voice getting an edge to it that was so unlike her that he was sure that what she had to say was serious. “It was a nightmare, but not because of anything you may have said or done. If anything you protected us as best as you could. True, not for any other reason than self-preservation, but you did do so.”
“Why are you telling me…”
“Thank you,” she murmured. “That’s it.” Luna looked up to the sky and said, “I better get going. It’ll be raining soon.” She nodded goodbye and went on her way over to the carriage that Lucius had arranged to take her over to the train station.
Lucius didn’t know he wasn’t alone until Hermione whispered, “That took a lot for her to say.”
His head lowered slightly. She slipped up over to him, her hand pressing to the small of his back in a show of support.
“I don’t deserve your support. Not in this,” he muttered, walking away from her. “I was a monster.”
Left without a rebuttal, Hermione watched as he trooped into the mansion and slammed the door behind himself.

Time for the answer to the last sing-a-long. Tisk, tisk, tisk, katiekrm! Never assume anything. The last review song was based on "Lies, lies, lies" by the Thompson Twins. So yeah, it was based on a real song. If you don't believe me, look it up on Hypster.com.
