RETURN

~Flashback~

“Jane Doe, perfect brain function, but has yet to wake up. Have the interns try to figure out who she is.” Her doctor said as he looked at her chart. After examining her and noting that she had just given birth recently, and seeing the claddagh ring on her finger he knew she belonged to someone and was hard pressed to find out whom. He planned to keep her alive as long as he could, even if he was to pay for her treatment out of his own pocket.

That he did, for seven long years. On Omra’s seventh birthday she awoke, however she had no recollection of who she was. She felt as if there was something terribly missing from her, but she could not figure out what. Even when her doctor said that she had, had a baby before she arrived, it did nothing for her memory. She did, however, move into Dr. Kiner’s home for her physical therapy and to work on regaining her memories.

“Dad?” The blonde young man called to his father who was busy in the kitchen with his Uncle Harry.

“Yes Ra?” Draco replied to him.

“What if mom is still out there? I mean, we never found her body, what if she’s still out there, alive, don’t you think it’s a bad idea to be dating again if she’s still out there?” Omra asked as he walked into the kitchen. Draco stopped what he was doing to look at his son.

“Ra, I love your mother, more than anything, but I just can’t keep hoping she’ll walk through that door. It’s killing me.”

“Uncle Harry says that you could still take the job as Potions instructor. I just don’t like the idea of you with other women.” Omra said finally. “Something in me just doesn’t believe she’s gone, I mean, if she's dead then WHERE IS HER BODY?” Omra loved his mother, even if he never met her really, he still dreamt of her often. He could just feel the love she had felt for him, trying to protect him.

“I know Ra, but it’s been ten years, I know she would want us to be happy.” Draco said as he hugged his son.

“At last, my love has come along…” Kiner started to sing the song one night, almost five years later, while cooking dinner. It had now been thirteen years since the incident. When she heard the words her brain sprang to life with all the memories she had forgotten. She dropped the salad bowl she had been retrieving.

“Draco.” She said. Kiner turned to look at her.

“What?”

“My boyfriend, his name is Draco. And my son, oh my god my son, what have they done to you?” She began to cry. “I have to go, I have to leave now, and I need to find my boys.”

“How did you remember?”

“That song.” She called as she ran out the door. She ran out the front door and apperated. She landed outside Hogsmeade on the road to Hogwarts, and then she started to run.

“Harry!” She cried. Harry turned to look at her. Immediately his face lit up at the sight of his best friend. He held open his arms and she ran into them.

“You’re here, you’re really here!” He whispered into her hair. “You saw him too then.”

“He’s back.” She whispered quietly.

“We can deal with him later. There’s something you need to know before you come inside, Amber.” She looked up at the DADA professor hesitantly.

“What’s happened?” She queried fearfully.

“Draco, he well, he sort of got remarried.” Her eyes watered at this news, but then she stopped herself and looked up at him.

“Then I’ll just have to be glad he didn’t pine away for me, that he did his best to be happy.” She smiled. Harry knew she was dying inside, but he didn’t say anything. He just led her into the Great Hall. All noise stopped when they saw who stood in the doorway next to Harry. Omra looked up and dropped his fork. Draco noticed the silence and looked and nearly choked when he saw her. His wife took his hand and held it possessively, sneering at Amber. Then, just as when she had been young, Dumbledore stood and began to speak.

“Everyone, if you’ll please welcome back, Amber Thibodeau. It has been far too long my dear. Omra, if you’ll stand up and let your mother see what a wonderful young man you’ve become.” Draco’s new wife huffed, clearly under the impression she was Omra’s mother. When Omra stood Amber broke into tears. He ran at full speed to her arms.

“I’ve missed you so much Mom.” He cried into her arms. Draco sat watching his son with his mother, regretting his marriage to Azalea Brown. Omra had been right all those years ago, she hadn’t died and now she was back and he had left her.

“I’m so sorry darling, I tried, I tried so hard to not let them take you.” She cried looking at him for the first time.

“It’s ok, you’re here now, and that’s all that matters. I’ve dreamed about you every night of my life.” She hugged him tight and saw Draco for the first time that evening.

“I need to go talk to your father now Aidan.” She said quietly to the teary eyed teen. Amber let him go and walked up towards the head table.

“Hello Draco.” She smiled. Azalea looked down on her.

“Don’t think that just because no one can kill you that you can come back and just start back up where you left off.” Amber turned her focus to the other woman.

“I’m sorry, I can’t remember, was I addressing you?” Amber smiled at the hateful woman. “Draco, can we please speak in private?”

“Y-.” he started.

“No, whatever you have to say to Draco you can say to me as well, he is my husband. Also, Omra does not need two mothers, he has one, me.” Draco was about to reprimand the woman but she had hit Amber’s one nerve.

“WILL YOU SHUT UP?” Amber hollered at the woman. “I’ve lost all of MY son’s life because of some idiot ‘Dark Lord’ and his faithful bastard of a minion! Now, Draco may have moved on and married you, I can accept that as long as he is happy. HOWEVER, after the welcome I just received from MY son, you will not tell me that you are his mother. I love that boy more than anything in this world.” Amber turned to Draco. He stood up and walked around the table.

“We can talk in my office Amber.” The two walked out and into the dungeons.

“I’m sorry about her Amber.”

“Did you waste all your good taste on me Draco?” She joked.

“She’s usually a really nice person, a bit spoiled, but really very nice.” He said.

“I’m sure. And I’m sure she’s with you for more than your money right?” She asked.

“I’m beginning to think differently.” He said as they walked into his office.

“Now, tell me what happened.” He said sadly.

“I was in a coma in Colorado for seven years. My doctor knew that I must belong to somebody as I was wearing the ring you gave me for Christmas.”

“What happened after you woke up; it’s been six since then?”

“I woke up and for almost seven months I was learning how to do things over again. Being magical I rehabilitated much quicker than normal, but I didn’t know who I was or where, or anything. Kiner, my doctor, called me Jane since he didn’t know who I was. Then tonight, he was making dinner and started to sing. And immediately I saw you and our son, and I remembered, I knew I needed to get here as fast as I could. And here I am.”

“What was he singing?” Draco looked confused.

“Do you really need to ask?” Amber looked at him and began to sing. “At last, my love has come along…” She smiled a teary eyed smile.

“Omra has listened to that song every day of his life, hoping that one day he would play it and you would walk in the door. But it never happened, but he never gave up on you. Even when I did, he knew you were still out there.” Draco cried. “I’m sorry, I gave up on you. I married someone else.”

“Draco, don’t apologize. I’m the one who has been gone for thirteen years. Do not blame yourself for loving someone else.”

“You are too good Amber, how can you be this wonderful?”

“Easy. I want you to be happy, and if that means letting you go, then that’s what I’m going to do. Harry and I have work to do anyway, and I want to get to know my son again.”

With that said Amber gave him a peck on the cheek and walked from the room. As soon as she was clear of the door she let the tears fall. She walked back to the Great Hall with tears flowing down her cheeks. Harry was waiting for her outside the doors and ran to her when he saw her crying.

“Hey, what’s the matter?”

“It’s just hard you know! If only I had been stronger than I would have been able to fight back and not missed everything in my son’s life.” Harry wrapped his arms around her and let her cry on his shoulder.

Draco sat in his office staring after her. As far as the law was concerned, she had been gone long enough for the marriage to have been over, but he still felt married to her. He felt as if she had never left, his heart was aching to hold her again. But now there was Azalea and he felt love for her as well; a different kind, but she was in his heart. He let his head fall to the desk and cried silently.

Days passed and Amber avoided Draco at every corner while spending more and more time with Omra and Harry. Omra told her everything that had happened over the past twelve years. He wanted his mother to feel as if she had never been gone. Draco constantly wished that he had done things differently, but he was torn between his love for Amber and his love for his new wife Azalea.

“Mom?”

“Yes?” Amber said from her seat next to Harry in his quarters where she had been staying. Lately, the two had been working on defeating Voldemort, yet again.

“You and Uncle Harry are in my history book. It doesn’t say much, will you tell me about it?” Harry and Amber exchanged looks.

“When you’re older we’ll give you all the horrid details. But not today.” Amber said remembering.
