Diaries of a Muggle Born's Cat
Why not me? I have been here as far back as I can remember. I am the only one left. My brothers, sisters, and even my mother have all been taken. They have been found and now reside with their own loving family. I have been forgotten. No one wants me. The shop owner cares for me but she has so many animals to care for it isn\'t the same as being loved by a real family. Today is just like the any other. People come and go, everyone ignores me. They want an owl, or a toad, or something exotic. None want a cat anymore. Here comes another woman excitement brimming inside her. What is it she could want? Wait, she is coming towards me. Mrs. Crowledge comes to assist her. They are discussing…me! I start exploding with hope. Will I finally be chosen? Yes! She does want me. Mrs. Crowledge lifts me and places me into one of those carrier things. It is stuffy in here. Not much room. It is worth it to finally have a family. The lady carries me out to a waiting car. When she gets in she hands me to a young boy. He stares at me wide happiness and love. He likes me. He does not like my name though, and frankly I don\'t either. He renames me. He calls me…Xavier. I like the sound of that.
I did not expect this long of a trip. I have been cooped up in this carrier for far too long. I cant wait to stretch my legs again. Finally I feel a stop on this…train. I am being taken down. Good, I was about to go crazy in this thing. I look for my new family but all I see are two huge eyes staring at me. This creature is weird looking. It is not much bigger than me but it has only two legs and no hair. Its big floppy ears, which remind me of a dog, lay back on its head. I notice there are many of them moving around and taking all of these boxes and such towards a fortress. I find us traveling up a set of stairs leading to darkness. I am then released from my carrier inside a room that houses six beds. I spring from the carrier eager to move around and get some exercise. I start searching the room, sniffing out any competitors and trying to find Lee’s scent. I then notice the odor. I look up and there beside one of the beds is an owl perched in his cage. Well, if I am going to have to share a living space with this bird there is going to be some rules. I find the bed that has the box with Lee’s scent and I mark my territory. This area is mine as I brandish my fangs in a hiss at the bird. I think he knows what I mean. I jump upon his bed and curl up to take a well deserved nap.
The seasons come and go. When it is warm and bright we are with the woman who came and taken me away from the shop. It is called home. And when it is cold and dark we are here in this fortress. In the fortress I have reign in his sleeping chambers and in an area known as the common room, which lies within the Smith dormitories, which lie within a place called Adams. I hear many things in this place. I am bearer of many secrets. I know much that many wish no one would know. Some tidbits like the Smith Donnie, who is a friend of Lees, is secretly seeing an Appleseed named Tessa. Apparently this would bring much disdain to him if anyone found out. And also the Smith known as Craig, who is mean to me and other animals, frequently takes items which do not belong to him. I personally keep him away from Lee’s territory. Lee is great to me; he is family I have wanted for a long time. He talks to me and tells me his tales. I listen and I know his heart. He pines so longingly for the female known as Sarah. I still do not understand the way these humans court their sexual opposites, but I understand how he feels. When he is down I try to comfort him as I snuggle up to him and show him that I care. He usually smiles and then tells me his troubles. Even with everything I know that is all I can do for him.
Tonight something is different. Lee has begun telling me about another female called Sheryl. I stare at the owl, Biswitch is his name, and I do not like his attitude. Lee continues with his description. He still wants Sarah, but he says Sheryl is good too. He tells me how pretty she is and how strong-willed. The way she makes him feel wanted. He is content for now, that is good. I purr contentedly.
Christmas is a special time for humans. They give each other gifts and Lee gives me one too. I watch him open a box that is covered in that strange paper he seems to like this of of year. I see him pull out a…MOUSE!!! GIMME! GIMME! He teases me with it. I must have it! He makes to…and he throws it. I take a running start and then stop. The mouse is doing nothing. I creep up so slowly I cant even hear myself. Just when I think the mouse is most vulnerable I pounce. The mouse is mine. It feels different in my mouth somehow. Wait! This isn\'t a real mouse, it is but a toy. He tricked me. But I enjoy it anyway. I watch him smile and laugh as I play.
I am curled up on his bed. It feels so good up here. Then I jump in a panic as Lee bursts through the door suddenly in a fit of…angst. Biswitch gives a disdainful hoot; I still do not like him. Lee lies beside me and starts stroking my fur. I can tell he is upset so I do my usual loving snuggle against his chin trying to get a smiling response. It doesn\'t work but he manages to become less tense and spin w yaw yarn for me. It seems Sarah has been suffering from a major bout of depression. Then to top it off Sheryl caught him comforting Sheryl when he was supposed to be with her. Now he knows he has lost Sheryl and has no idea what Sarah thinks. Like he ever did? He is really down so I give him another nuzzling to let him know he still has me.
“Yes, Xavier, I know I still have you.”
