Chapter 7. Thoughts and Dreams
Hermione went to her rooms and got ready for bed. She couldn\'t get out of her head how long he had stared into her eyes. What was he looking for? And had he found it?
She sighed and flopped on her bed, upsetting Crookshanks, who was sleeping.
He gave a sleepy. \"Brrrrrrt!\" of annoyance and stalked to the end of the bed.
\"Sorry Crookshanks,\" his mistress said absently. She was staring off into space and the cat wondered what was so interesting. He briefly considered checking it out; but sleep won over and he lay his head down.
Hermione wondered why he had bothered to seek her out in the first place. And why he\'d warned her about the Slytherins. She lay down and fell asleep thinking about it.
There was a wieght on her chest. She couldn\'t see a thing and someone was holding her down. She struggled; but the weight stayed put.
Frightned considerably, she struggled more; but to no avail. She began to whimper and someone told her roughly to shut up.
Tears slid down her cheeks and she couldn\'t stop them. She was scared. Something was very wrong; but she still couldn\'t see.
She twisted and turned under the weight on her chest, trying again to dislodge it. She was finding it hard to breathe.
She stilled when she felt something sharp prod her chest. She lay frozen with her breaths coming in gasps. Whatever it was had more than one point and the weight was shifting slightly as the sharp points pricked at her skin.
Hermione felt that this was very familiar and was oddly comforted by it. Suddenly her brain cleared and her eyes opened to find that her head was under her blanket and Crookshanks was lying on her chest kneading gently.
She began to cry silently. She\'d forgotten the dreamless potion and had a nightmare. She pushed the blanket down and found her cat looking at her and purring while his front paws kneaded away.
She managed a watery smile at her pet and reached for her nightstand to take her potion. It was only around two AM, so she would be able to get some real rest.
Severus waited until Hermione had gone and left the small room to go to his chambers. He wondered at his own behaviour. Why had he stared at her for so long? He snorted softly to himself. \'You know, you horrid old bastard.\'
He saw a kindred spirit. He\'d never meant to get this close. He was beginning to become attatched to her, and that was not of the good. It might have been, if he didn\'t have other things to worry about.
She was so stong, and yet so weak sometimes. He supposed it was because she was female. Women tended to care more what other people thought. That was her weakness. He knew it from the way she had acted when he had found her that night and from mealtimes when his house had been giving her the evil eye.
\'If only things were different,\' he thought. \'She could be the one I have been waiting for.\' A potions assistant that could actually keep up with him. But this was her final year, and he had his spying to worry about.
Maybe if Potter actually succeded and killed the Dark Lord, he\'d ask Miss Granger to consider an apprenticeship with him.
It was strange; but she seemed to actually like him. She never flinched when she saw him anymore. Usually this would annoy him; but with her it was different. He wanted her to like him.
\'Severus you\'re reaching there.\' He told himself firmly. \'You want her to respect you. NOT like you.\'
His subconscious responded with a snort and a \'Riiiight. She already respects you, you git. You want more than that.\'
He sighed. That could never be either. She may like him; but she\'d never see him as anything other than her teacher, and maybe someday a colleague.
He got ready for bed telling himself that she was a pretty young girl with hopes and dreams, and that he was not a part of them.
He resolved to restrain himself more when in her presence. He would not, however, revert to being nasty towards her. He\'d simply have to keep his distance from the girl. No more touching her.
He hoped to recieve a letter back from his councillor friend soon. Then he and Miss Granger could set up her appointments and her days for grading his papers for him.
He sighed. That would be trying. As much as he hated grading papers, he wasn\'t sure if it was a fair trade. At least he could converse with the girl. He reasoned. Find out how much she was interested in Potions as a career.
He sighed and cleared his mind so he could fall asleep.
AN: Sorry about that. I just wanted to establish the fact that Severus has feelings for Hermione first. I\'m not so sure about this chapter, so let me know if you liked it!
