The Taste of Revenge – Chapter 7
Severus was happy.
School had become nicer after the werewolf incident. Sirius Black had toned down a little, not constantly seeking to confront and humiliate him, and Potter... Well, Potter was still the same annoying prick. There were times when Severus caught him staring at him, and then the boy looked away, but also usually found some reason to throw a hex or a jinx at him later. Sirius had been told off by the Headmaster, but Potter was most likely the big hero in Dumbledore\'s eyes.
Severus was happy, even though he deeply resented owing his life and health to James Potter.
He spent long hours, as often as he could, together with Lucius. Severus felt free with the aristocratic young man, even when he was tightly tied up on the bed or over a table. Lucius forced him to be free – free of inhibitions, free of indoctrination from his parents, free to enjoy anything he secretly wanted to explore – and Severus loved every second of it.
He certainly enjoyed the time they spent together dressed as well; there was more to their relationship than sex. Severus had even succumbed to his emotional nature and had, one early morning, when the first rays of the sun found their way through a gap in the heavy curtains, said the words \'I love you\'. Lucius had looked surprised at first, but then he had smiled. It was one of those rare, warm and genuine smiles, and then he had kissed Severus after whispering, almost inaudibly, \'I love you too\'.
Yes, life was infinitely better than it had been, and yet, Severus still got a hateful look on his face every time he laid eyes on Sirius Black or James Potter. He wondered sometimes if Potter didn\'t regret his heroics, perhaps thought it would have been better if he hadn\'t tried to prove his nauseously shining Gryffindor heart by saving the poor Slytherin in distress. But of course, Potter had to save his friends. Had Lupin infected or killed... had Lupin had time to sink his slavering fangs into Severus\' flesh, there would have been no way that Dumbledore would have been able to sweep it under the rug.
It was as if Potter blamed him for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, for having been tricked into following Lupin. Why Potter didn\'t blame his dear friend Black for putting Lupin in danger of exposure, for actually sending a potential kill his way, was beyond Severus. He hadn\'t tried to turn his own friend into an instrument of death, like Black had. Yet, Potter and Black were as inseparable as always, strutting around the school grounds like peacocks during mating-season. Pettigrew hadn\'t changed and was still the eternal onlooker who applauded and cheered when his friends had the upper hand, whereas Lupin had taken to actively avoid Severus, averting his eyes when he couldn\'t.
Outside of school, Severus was happy. At Hogwarts, he was even more determined to find a reason to get the boys expelled. As it was, he had to settle for Black and Potter getting detentions when he revealed some of their pranks. It was also quite a good way to practice counterjinxes and becoming faster at throwing hexes. Duels were of course frowned upon, but what the teachers didn\'t know, they couldn\'t give detention for.

It was close to graduation, already June, and the seventh year students were about to take the examination for the final N.E.W.T: Defence Against the Dark Arts.
Severus walked into the Great Hall quite eagerly. This was his favourite subject, and to tell the truth, he knew a great deal more about it than was said in the schoolbooks, and then not only how to defend against the Dark Arts, but also how to use them. The few times that someone had questioned him about his obvious interest in the Dark Arts, he\'d sneered at them and asked how they proposed to defend themselves against something they had no knowledge of. It was easy to hide behind the old adage of \'know thine enemy\'.
The questions on the written part were interesting. Some of them were a bit easy and the replies quite obvious in Severus\' eyes, but on the whole he enjoyed taking the test and wrote detailed descriptions on how to handle the most varied things, showing real depth to his knowledge of the subject.
~.~.~
The N.E.W.T\'s were behind them, and there was an air of joy and relaxation at Hogwarts. Some were happy to leave in no more than a week\'s time; others displayed sadness or melancholy, not wanting to be separated from their friends. It was a time when a stage in the lives of the seventh years were closed, finished, and they would never be able to go back.
Severus displayed neither joy and relaxation, nor any regret or sentimentality. He was pleased that school had finally come to an end, but was not about to show it. Now he would be able to turn his attention toward the things he really wanted to study, but hadn\'t had as much time for as he would have wished, due to classes and homework. No longer would teachers dictate what he should study and learn. Granted, many things had been basic, useful, and Severus would be able to build upon that knowledge as well.

Lucius traced the curve of Severus\' collarbone with his fingers, and Severus smiled.
\"You look content.\" Lucius smiled back. They were both in a blissfully relaxed state after their lovemaking.
\"How could I not be? After coming Merlin knows how many times... I won\'t be able to sit for days, you satyric brute.\" Severus tried to sound annoyed, but the sated smile belied the tone of his voice.
\"Three. And it was no more than you wanted,\" Lucius said with an amused look on his face.
\"There are times when it\'s a bit disturbing how well you know me... At least there are no more classes I\'ll have to sit through with a sore arse.\"
Lucius nodded and put a trail of kisses following the path of his finger. \"School is over, and we won\'t have to schedule our meetings after that.\" He looked at his lover, resting his head in his hand, propped up on his elbow. \"Which brings us to the next point on our agenda this morning.\"
Severus searched Lucius\' eyes and mind, as deep as he could at that moment, but could find no clues as to what Lucius had in mind.
\"I have something for you.\" With a smirk, Lucius rolled away from Severus and got out of the bed. Their bed, as they both preferred to think of it.
Severus groaned. \"That\'s what you said before. I really don\'t think I can handle...\" Lucius\' laugh interrupted him.
\"No more sex, not at the moment anyway.\" Lucius crossed the room to his wardrobe and opened one of the doors, taking out a gift-wrapped parcel. He sat down on the edge of the bed and held it out to Severus.
It was fairly large and also quite heavy, as Severus discovered as he took the flat object after having propped himself up with a few pillows against the headboard. \"What is it?\"
\"A graduation gift, and you\'ll have to open it to find out what it contains.\"
Severus quickly ripped off the wrapping paper, a smile spreading over his face as he saw what Lucius had bought him. \"Lucius... this is too much.\"
\"Nonsense. You have talked about that book for months now, of course I wanted to give it to you.\" Lucius leaned close and put a soft kiss on Severus\' lips. \"You\'ve earned it.\"
\"Thank you. I\'ll have much use for this.\" Severus smiled.
Lucius nodded and put his hand on Severus\' leg. \"Have you thought more about what we talked about last week?\"
\"Joining your Dark Lord?\" Severus placed the book on the bed next to him and looked at Lucius. He had been thinking, weighing the possibilities and the positive and the negative aspects of the proposal. To have some leverage, to feel that he was more powerful than his antagonists – his father, the loud, harsh brute of a man, Potter and Black, the arrogant bullies, and there were others as well – was certainly very attractive. \"I have thought about it.\"
He looked at Lucius\' hand where it rested on his leg; it looked perfect there, felt perfect as well, and he didn\'t want to lose that. Would he, if he decided to not join Lucius and the others? It had never sounded like that. Lucius had sounded and felt like he was giving him an opportunity to play a part in the actual shaping of the future. It was tempting. Severus wanted to be acknowledged for his skills, for his learning and research. His father had never had any sympathy for this, lecturing that school was only there to teach discipline and what magic was needed for pursuing one\'s work. That Severus found the learning process in itself, research and the writing of essays to be important and satisfying hadn\'t sat well with him.
But this Wizard, this Lord, was looking for clever and skilled young Wizards to join his cause. Wizards like Severus. There had been rewards promised, recognition, and a possible position in the new society. A society where purebloods ruled, and mudbloods were relegated to their proper place; they were suited for menial tasks, not jobs with any kind of authority or influence. Many of them would have lived perfectly happy, oblivious, in their little muggle-world, so what was the point of sending them letters, inviting them to Hogwarts? Better to let them live their simple little lives undisturbed instead of dragging them here to upset and complicate things. They really had nothing to do here.
\"You\'ll have all the opportunity you want for studies and research, including test subjects,\" Lucius said and slid his hand higher.
\"Test subjects?\" Severus looked up into Lucius\' eyes.
\"Yes, for potions, or development and experiments with curses. No one will tell us that we can\'t use an Unforgivable there.\"
Ah, of course, the Dark Arts. Severus nodded. He wasn\'t squeamish, and he thought it could prove very interesting to have live subjects to study. Live human subjects, not only animals... The effects of some potions were very hard to discern when dealing with a rabbit for example, especially when the intended recipient was human. Research would be so much easier if it were not for all the restrictions.
\"No need to decide yet, Severus. Take your time.\" Lucius leaned forward and slowly licked a wet trail up over Severus\' pale thigh. He looked up at Severus and smiled faintly before teasing his flaccid cock with the tip of his tongue.
\"Lucius...\"
\"Mmhm?\" The sound caused a slight vibration as Lucius drew the awakening member into his mouth, and Severus reached down to thread his fingers through Lucius\' thick mane of hair.
\"You\'re killing me.\" There was no mistaking the air of amused satisfaction that Severus could feel from Lucius, even without eye contact.
