Chapter 7

****

Hermione didn’t have much time to think about Snape after that. Professor Seerstram had arrived, and Hermione had to prepare for her interview.

Her first view of the man was at dinner, the night before her interview. Seerstam entered the Great Hall with Professor Dumbledore. A solidly built man with white-blonde hair, dressed in black robes with charcoal grey piping, Seerstram appeared to be in his early 60s, although with wizards, it was hard to tell. He greeted Snape enthusiastically, and received a toned-down, but not unpleasant response. Dumbledore then brought him over to meet Hermione.

“Ole, this is Miss Granger – one of the most promising students Hogwarts has ever seen. Miss Granger, Professor Seerstram. Hermione, why don’t you sit with us, and get a chance to get acquainted with the professor?” Hermione found herself sitting between Dumbledore and Seerstram, with Snape sitting next to the Norwegian professor.

“Miss Granger,” Seerstram began, “I must tell you how pleased I am to meet you. Albus has great things to say about you. Have you ever been to Norway?” Hermione shook her head. “Beautiful land. The people are wonderful. And, have you ever skied?” Again, Hermione shook her head. “We’ll have to correct that, won’t we? My wife is a beautiful skier; she raced on alpine skis in the Pan-Wizard Games when she was younger. Now, she mostly skis – cross-country – I think it is called here. I have to say it is a great diversion, and gives you a chance to get out of the laboratory, and into the fresh air for a while.” He painted a picture of skiing through the Norwegian forests, fresh snow underfoot.

“It sounds absolutely beautiful,” Hermione breathed, already enchanted with the Potions Master who was so unlike the one she was used to.

Dinner progressed, and Hermione began to feel even more comfortable with Professor Seerstram. She was able to participate in the brief discussion about his current areas of research, and the professor seemed genuinely pleased with the questions that she asked.

At the end of the meal, Hermione gave her excuses, and went back to her room; it was planned that she would spend most of tomorrow afternoon with professor Seerstram, and she wanted to make tonight an early night, so that she would be rested for the meeting. Dumbledore nodded as she left, and gave her a small wink. Hermione left the hall feeling optimistic.

Wanting to spend a little more time with a fellow Potions Master, Seerstram invited Snape to his guest rooms. Seeing no way to politely decline, Snape joined him.

“Soodkaodka, Severus?” Snape nodded. He knew that he was expected to talk with Seerstram for Hermione’s sake, and it had been a long while since he had had a good opportunity to talk with another Potions Master; while Hogwarts attracted faculty who had a great background in their selected disciplines, he hadn’t had much chance to ‘talk shop’ in a while.

Several hours later, as Snape stood to leave for the evening, Seerstram thanked him heartily for the conversation. “And Severus, I have to say, thank you for encouraging your student to seek an interview with me. Sometimes it’s easy to be selfish with the best ones, but I think she’ll be a real credit to our field.” Nodding, not wishing to correct the misunderstanding about who had encouraged her to look elsewhere, he left the guest rooms.

Only when he got back to his own rooms did he mutter uncharitably about skiing.

The meeting with Seerstram the next afternoon went exceptionally well. Seerstram was impressed with Hermione’s breadth and depth of knowledge, as well as her enthusiasm for research, and her strong interest in blending knowledge from different fields into her Potions work.

Hermione was equally impressed. Not only did Seerstram have vast stores of knowledge, and a technical ability that rivaled Snape’s, but he had a sense of humor, and had an interest in helping his apprentices develop as well-rounded individuals, and not just scholars. ”I must warn you, Miss Granger. Norway is cold and dark in winter.” Hermione’s face remained impassive as Seerstram spoke, until he broke into a grin, “But with plenty of torches, friends, good food and vodka, we keep the dark away, and the cold stays outside.”

At the end of the interview that afternoon, Professor Seerstram (“Call me ‘Ole’) made Hermione a formal offer of apprenticeship. “Miss Granger. Your professors have nothing but superlatives to describe you. Your work is impeccable, your mind is quick, and you have a demonstrated love of learning. Additionally, you are a pleasant young lady with a delightful wit, and a sense of fun. Miss Granger, I would like to formally offer you an apprenticeship with me, in Norway, for a period of 5 years following your graduation.”

A sense of excitement, mingled with relief flooded through Hermione. “Thank you, Sir. I am extremely honored with your offer. I have to wait until I have received word on my funding situation before I can give you a formal acceptance, but Professor, ouldould love to study with you. Thank you so very much!”

Dinner the next night had been a small celebration in Hermione’s honor. School was still out of session, so the remaining students joined the faculty in a lively dinner.joyijoying the attention from the faculty, Hermione couldn’t help but notice that Snape looked as though he was ready to bolt at a moment’s notice. His scowl only deepened when Hermione told Professor McGonagall that if it wasn’t for Professor Snape’s demanding teaching style, she doubted that Professor Seerstram would have accepted her.

At the end of the evening, Hermione retreated to her room to reflect on the events of the last few days.

Wow. The meeting with Professor Seerstram – Ole – was fantastic, and I am so pleased that he offered me the apprenticeship. While Norway might not have been my first choice, I think that having a Potions Master who actually laughs will make quite a bit of difference!

And speaking of Potions Masters, what is with Snape lately? He did nothing but glower tonight – even when I tried to pay him a compliment via Professor McGonagall, he had this look on his face like he would rather be hanging out with his Death Eater buddies than being there. Oh well. A few more months and I’m out of here. No more dealing with the bastard. “20 points from Gryffindor for having fun, Miss Granger. Is that a smile I see? Another 15 points. Potions can only be appreciated through suffering, Miss Granger.”

It’s funny. Part of me still thinks that the Real Snape is hiding in those black clothes, somewhere. But after tonight, I’m beginning to wonder if what we see with Snape really is how he is. Maybe he wasn’t hugged enough as a child, or something. Still, a waste of some fine hands, that is.

The start of school after the Christmas holidays was a busy period for Hermione. True to his word, Snape had become more relentless on her than ever. The first day back from the break, Snape deducted 20 points from Gryffindor because Hermione had failed to prevent Neville from causing a large plume of blue smoke to erupt from his cauldron. The second day back, he deducted another 20 points because Hermione had failed to let Neville do his own work, and an additional 15 points because Hermione wasn’t able to answer his latest question. “Miss Granger, I have no idea how you plan on carrying on any further study in Potions when you clearly lack even the most basic knowledge.”

Black-hearted bastard. He humiliates me in class, and yet he still haunts my dreams. At least I no longer have to wonder whether he’s human or not. He’s obviously not.

A/N: Yes, the comment about Ole\'s wife as a skier is mostly irrelevant. But I am a die-hard skier, and I never miss an opportunity to through it in when I can!

And no, I haven\'t given up on Hermione/Lucius, hopefully I can get some more posted this afternoon, or tomorrow at the latest.
