Recovering

A/N: I must apologize in advance, my stories have always tended to start strong then taper off. As for the whole Harry thing, that is the most we will see of him, I just grew tired of Harry siding with Ron in stories and wanted him to beat the snot out of Ron. Now we can focus on Snape/Hermione. I do have a fun chapter coming up soon. My husband actually gave me the idea…a fun surprise you could say, for all of you lovely people. Hermione is a strong girl, she will recover, with Snape’s help of course!

Ch. 6 Recovering

Severus found himself at Hermione’s bedside several times over the next few days, and actually enjoying himself. Surprisingly, he discovered she had extremely intelligent opinions on many things and was well verse in the area of potions. This was where he found himself today, debating a potential potions problem with her.

Her injuries were healing well, and she was almost her old know-it-all self at times. At this moment, she was debating animatedly about the use of spell work to enhance potions. Severus had set her off by calling it foolish wand waving again. To his amazement, he was almost smiling.

“So, by using your so-called ‘foolish wand waving’ you could actually divide the time to create any number of potions as long as the stirring is done by hand…what?” she said as she noticed the look on her ex-professor’s face.

“It is just good to see you are well, Ms. Granger.” It was true; he had become quite concerned about the young woman’s well being. He was worried that she would never again have that fire in her. Though she still refused to let anyone touch her, she was finally talking and interacting with people again…though not enough to actually finger her assailant, however much everyone pushed her to.

She smiled at him, a pure, genuine smile that seemed to be rare lately. “How is Harry?” She asked with a concerned look. A snort was heard from the smirking man. “Mr. Potter was released from the ministry’s holding cell early this morning. If he can contain himself, he should be fine. Insolent bonehead.”

Hermione looked at the man in front of her, it was obvious that he still carried a great deal of resentment towards Harry, but this time, she saw something else. She wanted to say respect? No way. She laughed to herself. She had become accustomed to Severus’s company, often times waking to find him in the chair by her bed.

They shared a companionable silence for a few minutes. “Did the healers say when you would be free to go home?” he asked her with curiosity. She nodded her head, “They say if no problems arise, I can go home tomorrow.” Severus inclined his head in acknowledgement.

He still did not like the idea of the girl going home and being alone after what had happened to her, and with Mr. Weasley (as he had assumed was the attacker from Mr. Potter’s reaction) still on the loose. Hmm, he needed to speak with Minerva about perhaps bringing her to the castle until she fully recovered.

“If you will excuse me Ms. Granger, there is a matter of great importance which requires my attention, I shall return shortly.” She smiled at him as he gave his trademark twirl and with a billow of robes, he had gone.

She sat in her bed, happy to finally have some alone time, but already longing to have Professor Snape with her again. She couldn’t explain it, but with him, she felt safe, comfortable. Though she would never say anything, she was dreading having to go back to her lonely apartment…all by herself. She sighed and decided to try and get a bit of rest.

She had barely drifted off when the door to her room opened. Thinking it was the professor again, she sat up and smiled expectantly. Who she saw sent chills down her spine. She began to shake in terror. “What are you doing here Ron?” she spat at the redhead. “How did you get in?”

He looked at her with remorseful eyes as she covered herself with her blankets, trying to shield herself. “Mione, I had to talk to you, to apologize.” She shuddered hearing her name come from his mouth again. He started to walk towards her, she scrambled off the bed and ran to the corner, looking around for anything to defend herself as she still needed to replace her wand.

“Don’t come any closer, Ronald, stay there, leave even. Just leave me alone.” She began to cry in earnest, praying that Snape would come back and make the boy leave. He kept advancing towards her. She was trapped. Seeing her eyes wide with fear, Ron tried to pull her into what he thought to be a comforting hug. She shrieked at the top of her lungs.

In an act of desperation, she swiftly brought her knee to his groin and her fist to his nose. Effectively putting some distance between them. She was about to run out the door to find help when he gently grabbed her arm. Even though it didn’t hurt, she started yelling for help. Screaming and punching. She fell to the ground, shielding herself with her arms.

The next thing she knew, the shadow of Ron had gone. She looked up to see Professor Snape holding Ron against the wall, wand at his chest. Following him were a group of security wizards. They tried to pry Severus off the boy, to no avail. He looked Ron square in the eyes, “Get out.” He said in a dangerously low voice. “If you so much as think about her again, you will not know what hit you.”

Ron looked around Snape to Hermione. “I just wanted to apologize. I didn’t mean..” Hermione stood up. “Didn’t mean to what, Ronald? Rape me? Hit me and cut me to a thread of life?” she lowered her gown enough to show Ron the engraving. “To mark me?!?!” Ron’s face fell and his head slumped against his chest, defeated. “I only wanted you to love me, I didn’t mean to hurt you.” The security wizards eyes opened in shock and they moved in to take Ron into custody.

As they left with Ron’s hands bound magically. Severus walked over to Hermione and offered her his hand. “Are you alright Ms. Granger?” he asked, his eyes glazed with emotion. She wiped her sleeve across her face and sniffed.

“Yes, Professor, he didn’t hurt me, it just scared me.” She took his proffered hand and allowed him to lead her back to the bed. “Professor?” she sobbed slightly. He looked at her and nodded, showing her she had his full attention. “I don’t want to go home by myself tomorrow.” She wailed.

Severus did not know what to do. Comfort was not a quality that was imbibed in his character. He sat down on the bed beside her and hesitantly put his hand on her back, rubbing soothing circles. “Well, Ms. Granger,” he said as softly as a man as snarky as he was could. “I was just coming back to tell you that Headmistress McGonagall has agreed to set you some rooms aside at Hogwarts.”

Hermione’s eyes lit up instantly, go back to Hogwarts? That was like going to paradise! “Of course,” he continued, smirking. “It is only until you are well enough to return to your own place of residence.”

“But sir,” she began. “My work, I couldn’t possibly, I mean, it is a great gesture. Very generous, but.” She began to ramble. Severus held up his hand to quiet her. “Do not vex yourself. Your employer has been informed of your condition and that you have been offered temporary housing at Hogwarts. At which time,” He raised his voice as she was about to interrupt.

“While you are in recovery, you will be my assistant. Helping me with classes, potions, and other oddities.” He thought the girl would bounce clear off the bed at this news. He knew she would not take a hand-out. Damn Gryffindor pride. So he had arranged with Minerva for Hermione to stay close to him, safe, while helping a bit when she felt up to it.

“I take it, Ms. Granger, that you accept these terms?” He quirked his eyebrow at the excited young witch. “Of course, sir. Oh thank you Professor Snape!” Without thinking, she threw her arms around him and hugged him. Realizing what she had done, she quickly pulled away, blushing.

“Very well, Ms. Granger, I will arrange it. I shall escort you there tomorrow after your discharge.” He gave a soft smile to the girl and excused himself, leaving her to her thoughts. Hogwarts..she was going back. She was going home!

A/A/N: Whew, Severus is actually a hard character to write. Huge kudos to JKR for being able to keep him in character for 7 books!!! Hope you like this one. I try to update at least once a day, when my 4 year old naps. lol. Thanks for reading!
