Chapter 6
A Bracelet for Kirsty
When Kirsty woke up in her four-poster with all her curtains closed around her it was Saturday evening. She was lucky it was weekend because she would have slept through all the lessons otherwise. As soon as she made an effort to move her body made its protest’s known. Her entire upper body was stiff and sore and the pain between her legs, that first seemed to be almost gone, came back to her the moment she tried to sit up. She felt weak from the long sleep and not having eaten in a while. She decided that regardless, it was time to get up and catch dinner in the great hall. Thelma, the girl occupying the bed next to her saw her walking pass and jumped off the bed.
”What the hell happened to you?!”
Kirsty looked tiredly down at herself. She noticed she had some bad, visible bruises on her neck and arms. Catching sight of herself in the mirror she saw another bruise in her face where she had hit the table. She didn’t answer the girl and simply continued on her way to the bathroom. She tried her best to cover up the more visible of the bruises; in an effort to avoid further questions she couldn’t and wouldn’t answer. “Get a grip.” She told herself and decided to make sure she looked and acted as she normally did.
When, shortly after, she sat down at the Slytherin table in the Great Hall and saw all the food in front of her, she realised that she was not at all feeling hungry. She looked over all the different dishes and eventually settled for something simple and served herself some tomato soup. She noticed that Draco wasn’t there. He was probably spending the weekend at home as he often did... but she was worried about him. Yes, she didn’t care for his sexual attention, but she still liked him. He was only a boy and she had no idea what his father was going to do to him because of her. She felt guilty. With the first few spoons of soup, her brain slowly started to work again. She was back at Hogwarts, nothing seemed different. When she looked back on last night, it was hard to believe it had really happened. It was more like a bizarre dream. But her pain was still real.
Looking around herself, taking in the sight of the other house tables and the students, the teachers up at the high table, the candles floating above and above them the ceiling charmed to look like the sky… it came to her mind that she could pretend that nothing had happened and she would just forget about her crazy desire that made her want to be a Deatheater. She could go back to just being a Hogwarts student. This possibility seemed reassuring; but deep down she knew it would not work. There was a reason why she had gone there last night, despite all the risks and warnings. She remembered Lucius telling her that she had wanted it. She knew that she had not wanted to be raped, but she had known it was going to be dangerous. Yet she had pushed the risks aside. She realised she really had not thought about what could happen to her at all, showing up unannounced and uninvited at a Deatheaters meeting. The warnings from Professor Snape and Draco had made no impact on her determination to follow through with her plans. Deep down she had wanted the danger that was why their warnings didn’t mean anything to her. Lucius was right, as crazy as it seemed, she had even wanted to be raped. At the moment of her revelation, something dropped on the table right next to her plate startling her. She jumped in her seat. It was a package; an owl had dropped it and flown right away again without even landing. Some students looked up curiously. Kirsty stared at it for a while. Somehow she knew she did not want to open it in front of everyone else. She had a bad feeling that this package was from someone she was not supposed to have any contact with. She dropped her spoon and as casually as she could, grabbed the package and went straight back to the common room.
Once she made her way, unhindered, back to the dorm; she rushed to her bed and closed the curtains around her. When she was sure, no one could see her she opened the package. She pulled out a letter; it was rolled around a broad leather arm bracelet. It was so broad it would almost cover the entire lower arm. It had three buckles to fasten it. She unrolled the letter and read;
Here is your own portkey. It will only work for you. It will notify you shortly before you are to port-key; so you can find a place where you can travel unnoticed. It will also notify you of your tasks. You will wear it at all times. This is your Dark Mark, the real one you have yet to earn. Expect your first task soon.
The letter wasn’t signed, but it didn’t need to be, she knew who had written it. She looked back at the bracelet. She could just throw it away and there would be nothing Lucius could do, if that famous twat Harry Potter was safe at Hogwarts from You-Know-Who, she definitely was safe from Lucius Malfoy.
She decided to put the bracelet aside for now and hid it under her pillow. But for the rest of the day she could not take her mind off it. She kept thinking that right now there might be a task; one that she didn’t know about because she wasn’t wearing it. Hogwarts was safe, yes, but she wanted something different. She didn’t want to be safe actually. She wanted the adventure, she wanted to be important. She wanted to be a Deatheater. She had gone through the pain and humiliation not only to save her life, but to become somebody, to be worthy. She realised she had made her decision when she went after the Deatheaters in the first place. She grabbed the bracelet and put it on her arm. She liked the feel and the look of it. But she realised it would be hard to hide and might invite questions. She pulled her sleeve down over it and checked in the mirror that it was hidden from sight.
It wasn’t until in the middle of transfiguration class on Monday that the bracelet started heating up. At first Kirsty tried to ignore it, she was in the middle of transfiguring a pigeon back into a dustpan. But the bracelet started to burn so badly, she bit her lip to prevent herself from screaming, dropped her wand jumped up and ran out of the class room. She only barely heard McGonagall screech after her; “Miss Flame, for goodness sake….?!”
As soon as she was in the hallway, Kirsty pulled off the bracelet. The skin on her arm was deep red, as though burned. She turned the bracelet around and looked at the inside. There was something written into the leather as thought burned in with a pin. The words were still glowing.
“The Book of Forgotten Curses is at Hogwarts. Find it. You have two days from now.”
