Chapter Six – The Ceremony
The next morning Lucius tried to understand why he had had such a strange reaction to Olivia. He finally decided it was intense desire he had experienced. He knew sometimes there was no rhyme or reason to physical attraction; it just was. He mentally shrugged and dressed for the day in one of his black raw silk suits, and a grey mandarin collar shirt with small Slytherin design buttons. He started to pull his long hair back with one of his ribands, but decided against it and left his hair loose. Any sensual advantage he could manage in this courtship he would take.
Lucius, Olivia, and her father sat together in the morning room with tea, discussing the wedding plans. They agreed to set the wedding for the next day. No one wanted a prolonged or elaborate ceremony, so Lucius arranged for a wizard cleric to officiate, and for the Minister of Magic to attend with his wife. That would be enough witnesses to get the word out and to make it legal. They would hold the ceremony in the temple on the estate grounds.
Olivia presented one small detail, “I haven’t a wedding dress. I would like to shop for a suitable dress for the occasion.”
Lucius had promised her a new wardrobe and he honored his promise, but he had no intention of letting her go out to the public shops. He had a couturier send a large selection of dresses in her size to the manor. She found one she liked immediately made of white gossamer material that floated around her ankles when she walked. A large array of clothing and accessories were added to the wedding dress, most of them more in keeping with Olivia’s normal styles, but Lucius required her to select several formal gowns for important social occasions.
After another delicious evening meal, Lucius stood to beat a quick retreat to his study, saying, “I have several things to finish in order to clear a few weeks of free time for my new wife after the ceremony.” He smiled distantly at Olivia. “My extensive business interests never stop needing attention, but after today I will assign my ministry secretary to take over most of it during our honeymoon.” He knew he was literally escaping her company, but felt that after the wedding would be time enough to try to overcome her impact on his senses. At least then he could do something about his attraction and perhaps assuage those inconvenient feelings.

Early on the morning of her wedding, Olivia wandered through the gardens looking for flowers for her bouquet. She soon found some gardenias and pale pink roses. She added some gardenia leaves to round out her bridal flowers. Then she picked a few more pink roses for her hair. She had no veil but she liked the idea of roses in her hair. She made a wreath of the flowers and took them into the manor. She asked Minnie to put the flowers in the refrigerator until just before the ceremony.
Meanwhile, Lucius and James White were closeted in Lucius’ study for hours working out the new business arrangements between their families, including the generous funds to be transferred immediately to the White coffers. James finally came out of the study looking a bit dazed, but he smiled reassuringly at Olivia letting her know empathically that everything was better than fine.
The ceremony proceeded right on time in the early afternoon in the garden temple. Lucius saw the flowers Olivia carried and realized he had not thought of procuring any blossoms for her, indeed of decorating the temple at all. To him the marriage was more due to pressure rather than pleasure, but he did momentarily feel he had not held up his part of their bargain. He resolved to at least provide her with a myriad of elegancies as his wife.
The Minister and his wife came for the ceremony, signed the witness papers and left for another engagement that they had previously promised to attend before Lucius Malfoy had suddenly required them for his wedding. They asked no questions and seemed relieved to be on their way quickly.
The house elves had laid on a beautiful banquet for the couple, her father and the cleric. Minnie had taken her cue from Olivia’s flowers and added several arrangements of blooms on the dining table. When Olivia complimented Lucius on the floral arrangements he looked blank for a minute, then said the house elves were responsible, he could not take credit. “I apologize for not making sure you had flowers for your wedding. That was entirely remiss of me,” Lucius said. “I will not prove so insensitive in future.”
Olivia smiled at him, “I know this wedding took place very quickly and you have many business interests to juggle. I found lovely blooms in your gardens, so in a way you did provide my flowers.”
Lucius had a qualm about her acceptance of his business interests causing his inattention. His real attention had been on errands for the Dark Lord, but that was not her concern. He hoped she would never know of his activities. The Dark Lord had been pleased at Malfoy’s quick compliance with his orders. For a short while, Lucius was free to pursue his new wife and secure another pureblood child.
After the meal, the cleric left and Olivia and her father were given a few private moments on the terrace to say their goodbyes. “Livvy, I want you to have this separate portkey to return home to California if you ever need it.” James handed her a frame with a picture of their family. “The portkey is the photo under the glass.” Her father hugged her and said, “I wish you all the joy in your marriage that I have found in mine to your mother. You know we love you, always.”
Olivia tried to keep her tears from falling but she knew she wouldn’t see either of her parents for a long time. She had much to accomplish in her new relationship. Olivia kissed her father and said, “I will be very careful, but I’m where I want to be, Father. I love him. It will work out – eventually. Lucius will allow me visits to you now and again, I’m sure. Perhaps he’ll visit with me. She wiped her tears and smiled. “I’ll know if things get too agitated with him, so that may help. I’ll miss you, but I’ll call often.”
“I’ll miss you, too Livvy.” She and her father walked back into the drawing room. “I’ll be leaving now, Lucius. Take care of my daughter. My wife and I will welcome you both to our home anytime you wish to visit.”
“Thank you, James. I appreciate the invitation,” replied Lucius while not committing himself to anything. Lucius gestured, “Your portkey is on the table. Whenever you’re ready,” he wrapped his arm around Olivia to show support and she leaned against him, surprising him with her acceptance of his small attention.
James grasped the portkey and disappeared immediately.
