WEREWOLVES AND WANDS
Amber felt guilty about lying to him, but she knew that somehow He would find out if anyone else knew about the baby, and then her nightmare would come true. Little did she know what harm she was doing.
Dumbledore had found some key to Voldemort’s destruction and was constantly searching for it, leaving the school in McGonagall’s care. The school’s Defense Against the Dark Art’s teacher had exposed himself as being a Deatheater and she had brought in Remus Lupin to take his place and give extra protection. Harry was thrilled to see his surrogate godfather again.
“REMUS!” Harry called as he entered the classroom first. The older man embraced him and smiled.
“You know, Harry, I’m still your professor, so this kind of behavior is not acceptable.” He teased.
“I’m just so glad to see you. Especially after everything.” Harry’s eyes saddened and Remus smiled.
“I’m happy to be here again. Sirius wouldn’t want you to feel so guilty Harry, nor do I. Now, since I’m here, let’s have some fun shall we?”
Harry loved to spend his weekends with the older man. They would spend hours talking and walking around the castle grounds or Hogsmeade. Harry was becoming happier while Amber was becoming more introverted and quiet.
The two were desperately trying to get enough potions to use against Voldemort when the time came. He had a suspicion that his friend was lying about being pregnant, but every time the subject was brought up she would get angry that he would think that. So he was content to work with her in almost silence. He wondered where the happy and sarcastic girl he had known had gone.
“She’s just different.” Harry said to Draco one evening.
“I know. She’s been acting so weird lately. She’s not the same girl she was.” Draco replied sadly.
A small dark figure pulled the Wolfsbane potion off the shelf and unscrewed the cap. Small shaking hands dropped the white powder in and swirled the bottle to mix it in. Then capped the potion and placed it back on the shelf. The figure ran out of the potions storage closet and ran into the Slytherin common room. But no one was awake to see it happen.
“Thank you Severus.” Remus said as he took his potion from the taller man. Severus gave him a curt nod and turned to put the potion back. Just moments after he heard his door close he noticed the odd appearance of the bottle in his hands.
“What in the world.” He whispered as he removed the cap and sniffed the potion. His eyes widened as the realization of the situation hit him. He dropped the bottle, letting it shatter and spill all over the floor, and ran out into the hallway his eyes scanning the crowd for Remus.
“REMUS!” He screamed, knowing full well what would happen if Remus were to stay in the building under the influence of the tampered potion. All the students looked at their usually icy professor to see extreme concern on his face. Snape ran through the halls towards the werewolf’s quarters but was unable to find him. He ran out and kept searching. He noticed that his time was running out as he saw the sun begin to disappear beneath the horizon. McGonagall, who had been informed of the Potions professor’s odd behavior came running to catch up with him.
“Severus, what’s the matter?” She asked.
“Someone has tampered with the Wolfsbane potion. If we do not find Remus and get him to go to the forest for the night, I fear for the students’ safety.” He said gravely.
“What has been done?”
“Someone, another student I fear, has added a large amount of powdered hellebore.” McGonagall’s face paled and she ran off in the opposite direction to gather the rest of the teachers and search for the man.
As the sun set further, they had no luck finding the man who was at that moment, playing wizard’s chess in Hagrid’s hut with one Ron Weasley. Remus could feel the change coming on, but he thought that the potion would suppress it like always. This time, he was wrong. The change was accelerated and he had no time to warn the others to leave.
“Remus?” Ron asked the older man when he stopped playing and went still. The redheaded young man stood and walked around the table to touch his shoulder. The others in the room looked when Ron stood. Fang started growling and Harry knew something was wrong.
Remus looked up at Ron and his body began a rapid change. Hermione screamed and hid behind Hagrid. Harry started talking to Remus.
“Remus, remember, you are not the wolf. You are Remus Lupin!” Harry yelled at him as he became the wolf. Harry ducked away, trying to take Ron with him, but Remus had a firm grip on the red head. Harry fell backwards and Hermione pulled him to her. Hagrid tried to stop the wolf-man, but he had already begun to tear the young man in his grasp apart. Ron screamed loudly and Hermione began to cry.
Snape, having heard the young man’s screams began running at full speed towards the noise. He burst through the door to Hagrid’s with McGonagall and several other teachers behind him. Harry was up and shouting spells at Remus but none seemed to hit him. Severus, catching Remus in a moment where his full attention was on his victim, shot at him a Stupefy and a Petrificus Totalus. Hermione screamed when she saw what had been done to her boyfriend and promptly fainted into Hagrid’s arms. Harry just looked down on him and began to cry.
“Is that a student?” McGonagall queried.
“I do believe that is Mr. Weasley.” Severus replied. McGonagall’s face went stark white and she immediately levitated him and rushed off to the hospital wing. “Mr. Potter, I am sorry, but as he attacked a student, the proper authorities must be notified.”
“What happened? He’s never usually like this.” Harry countered. “He would never attack a student unless something went wrong.”
“The batch of Wolfsbane potion I took today’s vial came from had been tampered with. I am looking into it as of this very moment. Hagrid, take Lupin to the dungeons and make sure he is secured.” Severus said tiredly as he left.
“Oh yes Mr. Malfoy, I did just as you asked!” The young Slytherin said jovially. The older man looked down on her.
“Good. Which one of the Golden Boy’s followers did he attack?”
“Ron Weasley.” She sneered. Lucius smirked and put his hand on the girl’s shoulder.
“Does this mean I can be a Deatheater now?” She bounced and he simply nodded and took her inside the meeting room to meet the Dark Lord. She saw all the other Deatheater standing there in their black robes and masks watching her from their positions around the Dark Lord. He led her straight past them to the front of the vast hall to where stood Voldemort, and he shoved her to her knees at his feet.
“Milord.” Lucius Malfoy bowed and kissed the older man’s hand before kneeling at his feet. “This young woman has weakened the Order by removing the werewolf Lupin from their services. He will be a prisoner of Azkaban before the night is over.”
He looked down on his most loyal Deatheater and this impatient looking young woman and smirked ever so slightly.
“Rise young one.” He said to her. She stood nervously. “You have proved yourself worthy of my mark. Do you swear to be loyal to me, at any cost? Do you swear to give your life for our cause?” She nodded and he took her left arm and placed his wand to her forearm. She nearly screamed in pain as the Dark Mark began to appear on her once flawless skin. Silent tears fell down from her eyes but she did not cry out, as that would be a sign of weakness.
As soon as the meeting was over she raced to Malfoy’s side. He just looked down on her and noticed the hopeful look on her face.
“Mr. Malfoy, you will talk to Draco? Make him see that Amber is trash and he should be with me?” She asked him desperately.
“Miss Parkinson, I would rather my son was a homosexual than to reproduce with the likes of you. However, you are preferable over the Thibodeau vermin. I will talk to him.”
“Will he survive?” Molly Weasley cried as she sat by her youngest son’s hospital bed.
“Yes, he will survive, and with little scarring as well. However, he will become a werewolf himself.” Molly began to cry hysterically.
“Oh, Remus. Who has done this awful thing?” Molly cried, bravely not blaming the man for what he had done, but the person responsible for tampering with the potion. Arthur just stood behind his wife with his hands on her shoulders silently crying for his son, their youngest, Ginny stood next to her mother, her body shaking from the sobs. Harry and Hermione were on the other side of the bed, Hermione in Harry’s arms. It was in that moment a, very, hormonal Amber came rushing into the hospital wing.
“Oh, no.” She whispered. Harry looked up at her sadly as she joined the two other students. Tears began to fall down her face and she knelt next to Hermione and hugged her as tightly as she could. The group stayed in those positions for what seemed to be forever, but what was in reality a little over an hour. During that time, hundreds of thoughts passed through Harry’s head. He was infuriated that another person was being taken away from him. He wanted revenge on whoever had done it, and he would get it by any means necessary.
The search was on in Hogwarts. Severus used the following day’s upper class Potions lessons to brew the veritaserum. A potion he intended to use on near all students when they were finished. That evening after dinner, all the seventh year students were asked to stay in the Great Hall. They would begin the questioning immediately.
Dumbledore went alphabetically down the list and not so much as one student said anything remotely useful. That is until they reached the letter P.
“Parkinson.” But Pansy was trying to sneak out the back of the hall. “Parkinson, get your ass over here right this instance.” She turned to look at them.
“Did you honestly think that some stupid little Gryffindork would do something like this? Please, only a true Slytherin like me would do it. I did it for you Draco, so we can be together again.” She attempted to run out of the building. However, Dumbledore, Severus, and McGonagall caught her with three different spells. Harry was infuriated. The aurors that had been overseeing the investigation took her away to Azkaban where Remus was already sitting in a cell.
“I could have killed him.” He kept repeating over and over again to himself. He sat there in a corner of his six foot by six foot cell rocking back and forth on the cold hard floor. With each pass of a dementor he let his mind go, little by little. He wished they would kill him already. Tears began to fall down his dirt covered cheeks.
Days went by and Ron showed no signs of waking up. Madame Pomfrey said it was for the best so his body could heal. Ginny and Hermione spent as much time as they could together sitting by his side, talking to him. Harry delved into his work on his spells for Voldemort.
“Hermione and Ron will most likely never have children now.” Amber said out of the blue one evening as she and Draco were sitting by the lake.
“That’s not such a bad thing.” Draco replied. Amber, shocked, turned up to look at him. “Well it isn’t. I never want to have children.”
“What is so bad about a family, having people who love you, who are not only a part of you, but of someone you love and who loves you too? What’s wrong with that?” She said and left before she started crying. Draco stared after her for a moment before getting up and following her.
“Amber! Why are you so upset about this?”
“Draco, I love you, you know I do. But you have to be the most selfish man on the planet.” And with that she ran up to Gryffindor tower.
She didn’t speak to him for almost two weeks. He couldn’t understand why it was so upsetting to her. That was until one morning Harry let him in the common room and he went up to her room to see her getting dressed. He gasped when he saw her stomach and the very distinct, and very large pregnant belly. Amber heard him and turned.
“HOLY SHIT!” He couldn’t help but scream. Harry came running and stopped dead when he saw her.
“You’re pregnant? You lied to us?”
“Harry, it’s a long story that I will gladly tell you after I talk to Draco.” She said sadly. Harry nodded and exited, closing the door behind him.
“This is why you haven’t been talking to me.” Draco said.
“Yes. When you said that you never wanted to have children it hurt Draco. I love you, and I want this baby.”
“Do you know what will happen if my father finds out about this?” He practically screamed.
“Do you know what will happen if Voldemort finds out about this?” She screamed back. “Draco, I didn’t tell anyone about the baby because I know what will happen to him. I thought that if no one knew then it wouldn’t come true. But now that you know, you’re father will soon know and then my nightmare will come true.” She started shaking. Draco stood there looking at her.
“I can’t believe you. I asked you if you were pregnant and you lied to me. You said you weren’t. I can’t believe you.”
“You couldn’t possibly understand Malfoy. All you know is how to be selfish. I was trying to protect our baby by not saying anything, can you possibly understand that?” She cast the concealing charm on her stomach and put her robe on before storming out of the room.
“Come on Harry. We have work to do.” She said as she walked out of the common room.
“Talk to me.” Harry said once they were in the third floor bathroom.
“Ever since I got here I’ve been having this recurring nightmare that I’m tied to a table and surrounded by Deatheaters. Their all laughing as one of them cuts open my stomach and takes my baby from me. When it first started I wasn’t pregnant so I thought it was just some random dream. But then I found out about the baby, and I thought that if I didn’t tell anyone then Voldemort wouldn’t find out and take him from me.” Harry wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close.
“It’s going to be okay. I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise.” Just then McGonagall came looking for them.
“The headmaster has returned and requests your presence in his office immediately.” She said and led them off.
“Hello Harry, Amber.” Dumbledore said when they entered.
“Headmaster.” They each replied.
“Lemon drop?” He offered, when they each refused he continued. “You must be wondering why I have been gone for so long. Well, I have been searching for a very powerful artifact that if used by a powerful wizard on the light side could kill Voldemort. Or in turn, destroy us all if he were to have it in his possession.”
“What artifact?” Harry questioned.
“The Wand of the White Lady.” Harry and Amber exchanged brief glances, hoping the other knew what Dumbledore was referring to.
“What is that?” Amber finally queried.
“The White Lady was the Celtic goddess of death and destruction. With her wand at our disposal, we can turn the war around and defeat him. But, the wand will not work for just anyone; it will choose who it wishes to work with and who it deems unworthy.” Dumbledore said looking at the two.
“And you think it will choose one of us?” Amber asked.
“Yes.”
“Have you found it Headmaster?” Harry continued.
“Yes.” The twinkle in his eyes was back and brighter than ever as he pulled a box from his desk. He opened it to reveal a fifteen inch, white birch wand. Inlaid in it was fragments of opal and there was a diamond set in the end of the handle. “This wand was crafted with a strand of a unicorn’s mane, and the scales of an albino dragon. Amber, I want you to take it in your hand and try to cast a spell.”
Amber removed the wand from the box and tried a simple levitation spell on one of Dumbledore’s trinkets. It didn’t move, in fact, the wand leapt from her hand and sat itself back in the box. Amber shrugged and turned to Harry. Dumbledore nodded at him and Harry too removed the shining wand from the box. This time, when he tried to levitate the trinket, it shot up to the ceiling and hovered before the impact. Dumbledore smiled.
“I do believe it likes you Harry. Please, guard it carefully and tell no one of its existence.” The two teens left the office and headed back to the bathroom.
“That was interesting.” Amber said.
“Yes, quite. But if it will help us, then I’m all for it.”
“I meant that he didn’t say which spell to use against him.” Amber looked at Harry.
“Library?” Harry offered.
“Library.” Amber agreed.
They spent the rest of the weekend and any spare moment throughout the week in the library researching the wand and all its powers. They discovered that the White Lady herself had been the one to inlay the jewels into it, she had be-spelled them with protection spells so that the user would be automatically shielded from harm if a curse was thrown at them. It was noted that any spell used with the wand was heightened by at least ten times the normal power. Thus why the trinket had rocketed towards the ceiling. With this knowledge, they deduced that were Harry to use this wand to cast an Avada Kedavra at Voldemort, he would surely win; the only problem was getting to him.
*White Lady - all Celtic countries; goddess of death and destruction. Called the Dryad of Death and Queen of the Dead, this goddess was a Crone aspect of the Goddess
