Hey
A big thanks to reviewers. They really mean a lot to me!
Chapter 5 – You know Nothing
“Malfoy”
“Zabini” Both boys nodded acknowledgment and good morning to each other.
Blaise Zabini was straitening his tie, he gave Draco a look of questioning and confusion.
“What was the Weasley girl doing here?”
“Not a lot.” Draco replied cautiously
“You two were acting rather chummy this morning” Blaise commented
“Don’t interfere with this Zabini it has nothing to do with you” Draco clenched his teeth. It was not that Blaise shouldn’t know, he was the son of a Death Eater after all, it was Draco was not accustomed to be questioned by anyone other than his parents and he didn’t like it.
Blaise rose an eyebrow at Draco, interested that he flared his temper so easily “But you see I am a Slytherin just like you and you can tell me or I will find out from her. There could always be something in it for me.”
Draco smirked, how wrong his roommate was. “Believe me, my friend, there is nothing in this for you, I still have doubts there is anything in this for me”
“Interesting”
“How so?”
Blaise looked him in the eye “Interesting because it means this was not of your doing. Interesting because it means you don’t think you can control the situation and interesting because from what I heard this morning the girl would be dead if it wasn’t for you. And we both know it would make your father very happy if she were to just up and die.”
Blaise, like Draco, didn’t understand Mr. Malfoy’s utter hatred of the girl, but there was something about her that made the older Malfoy lose his temper. It made both the younger Slytherin’s wonder what she had done, his rage when the Weasley girl was mentioned was far greater than that he kept for the rest of that family.
‘SHIT’ came Draco inner thoughts at Blaise’s comment, Blaise was not meant to be able to hear what was said this morning, which meant the other Slytherin took down Draco’s silencing charm and recreated his own so Draco wouldn’t notice the loss of magic. The sly bastard, but then again he was a Slytherin.
“You heard then?” Draco commented dryly
Blaise smirked, the dark haired Italian boy had known Draco most of his life. Blaise was not noticed, he kept it that way. He kept to the back of the class, his marks just above average but never anything to be noticed. He watched and observed and just like his father he would go into the ranks of the Death Eaters to watch what was happening in the Wizarding world, no one ever remembering his presence because he was always in the shadows. Draco wondered if anyone from another house even knew the other boys name.
“Of course I heard, when you were out of the room I woke and saw her in your bed still fully clothed and your blanket on the lounge, so I had to wonder what was going on. I switched the spell, as I am sure you have figured out, and lay feigning sleep and listening. It is my skill, as you know. I am surprised you had such a conversation in the presence of anyone, little lone me.”
Draco shook his head slightly, of course Blaise was right, he was stupid to presume he was sleeping or that his charm was still functioning and now he would pay for it. “It is hardly an exciting story Blaise” Draco offered. “How much did you hear?”
“Well then I guess you will be able to tell me before breakfast” Blaise smirked “So you can fill me in on what I missed.”
“Fine” Draco ground out. He might as well tell him the details at large than have him finding out himself, and he would if he wanted too. But he was glad he hadn’t heard anything about her little drinking habit. “It all started a few weeks into term, I was sent a owl from my mother asking about the Weasley family. I was told to look into where they were going.”
“What did you find out?” Blaise asked
“Nothing you need to know. But now you know why I am near the girl”
“But there has to be something in this for you or you wouldn’t be bothered and you certainly wouldn’t have saved her”
“I plan on destroying her. My father couldn’t destroy her father but I will destroy her, nice and slowly and if I am lucky enough she will actually be helpful” Draco smirked
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“A lot”
“Fine. So what happened last night that made you bring her here?”
“I followed her, she got cornered by an angry animal and like a stupid Gryffindor she didn’t have her wand. So I stunned the animal, healed her major wounds and she was unconscious so I let her sleep it off.”
“Why her? Wouldn’t it be far better to bring down Weasel? It is about time that git was brought down to size and you would get Potter at the same time.”
“But when I get her and I destroy her, it will also destroy her father like my father couldn’t. Weasel would be crushed because he couldn’t save her and Potter devastated that his little girlfriend is toast.” Draco smirked at the brilliance of his thoughts
“And when your father finds out you have been working against him?”
“He won’t”
“Are you so sure?” Blaise raised his eyebrow
“He will find out when the time is appropriate” Draco glared at his friend
“You wouldn’t be threatening me would you Draco?”
“I hardly need to threaten you, Blaise, we both know where the power lies here”
“It just goes to show what you think you know you don’t always know” Blaise stated in a non-committed way
“What do you know?” Draco asked intrigued
“A lot”
“Care to share?” Draco wondered if he was not the only one to get a letter
“It is possible”
“Spill Zabini” Draco said in a voice that would have sounded menacing to anyone else.
“No, I don’t think so. I know things, you know things…. Why don’t we just leave it that way?”
Draco smirked at his roommate, “fine, I highly doubt you know anything worth while anyway”
“Tell me Draco, did it always annoy you that my father is willing to share more with me than yours will with you?” Blaise almost cooed at Draco
“What could your father know of interest Zabini? He isn’t even in the Dark Lords inner circle”
Draco clenched his fists at his side, it had always pained him that his father didn’t see fit to include him or tell him what was going on. Draco hadn’t even really understood his father’s involvement until the end of last year. The fact that Zabini knew more than him got under his skin, but Draco decided if Zabini knew then he could find out.
Draco had never decided before the moment he said it to Blaise that he was going to destroy the girl. It was an impulse comment, a dangerous impulse, but now he had said it, he rather liked the idea. What started out for a bid for information for his own personal gain was turning into a game of destruction. Pity that Draco had never attempted something like this before, but now was a good time to start, especially if he wanted to be a great Death Eater. And what better target was there than the weak, muggle loving, poor little Weasley girl? Draco smirked to himself
Blaise and Draco parted ways. They were never seen together. Draco was seen and heard, he was the voice of Slytherin and the face of evil. Blaise on the other hand was unknown, he was never really seen by anyone, but he was powerful even if he down played it. Blaise was possibly the only person who Draco actually considered intelligent enough to have a conversation with.
That however did not make them friends. They had been thrown together by their fathers and forced to be roommates. Draco hated how Zabini could act like he owned the world even though his father was not an important death eater. Blaise hated the fact that Draco was so full of himself. He also hated the way Draco believed his father’s power and prestige transferred to him when it really didn’t. The two young men would play each other if the advantage arose or stand at each other’s back if that was more profitable. It was all about business in Slytherin.
*~*~*~*~*~*
Luna was wondering through one of the corridors when Ginny passed her. Ginny was too preoccupied to notice the Ravenclaw girl and kept walking. Luna however did notice.
“You have been different since start of term” Luna said in a dreamy voice
Ginny stopped suddenly, spinning on her heel.
“Oh… Hello Luna”
Luna smiled at Ginny with crooked grin. Her blues eyes sparkling with knowledge and an air of craziness.
Luna often reminded Ginny of Professor Dumbledore. Eyes sparkling with knowledge while they dodder around seemingly dim.
“Yes defiantly different” Luna muttered
Luna waved airily to Ginny as she continued to wander her way down the hall.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ginny was cautious of her every move now. The trio were becoming secretive, they also watched her like a hawk who had spied breakfast. It was becoming harder to sneak out of the castle at night. Ginny had turned to waiting until everyone was in bed before taking off to try and drink herself numb, but that was leaving her tired and feeling sick. Hermione had tried to get Ginny to talk about where she went at night but Ginny always gave her a cold shrug and after a while refused to even acknowledge the question. Hermione then decided she would wait around in the common room until Ginny went to bed, so she could escort her up to her dormitory. Harry and Ron had of course missed this, just like they missed how tired Hermione was looking from all the late nights.
Both girls began to wear down, Ginny feeling sick from loss of the alcohol on a regular basis almost ended up in the hospital wing when Colin Creevy noticed her shaking badly in potions. Luckily Ginny had been able to shake him off telling him it was just the cold and there was nothing wrong. Hermione for her part had taken to sleeping in, barley leaving herself enough time to dress and eat before class, the boys having always done that didn’t notice that change in her friends behaviour either. But thankfully for Ginny, Hermione cracked that night. After a week of little sleep and fruitless questioning Hermione appeared to have given up. She finished her homework and went to bed. Ginny seeing her escape made her way out of the castle for only the second time that week.
Ginny usually would have sat near the castle in contempt of her being smothered, but she was not risking anything tonight. Her next choice would have been the forest, its appeal was that it was forbidden, but tonight all it held was pain. So she headed to the lake. Checking carefully for signs for Malfoy she sat down and took out her freshly refilled flask, she noted that there were some things Slytherin’s were good for. Raising the flask in mock salute she swallowed several large mouthfuls of the potent liquid and rested her head against a rock. The feeling washed over her more lightly than it use too, raising the flask to her lips once more she took several large mouthfuls again. Ginny sighed, there was something too this feeling that she loved. It had never made her forget like Harry had told her it would, but it made things seem easier.
Ginny sat enjoying her quiet drink, her quiet feeling of numbness. She would savour this, if Hermione kept up with her watching it might be a long time before she could savour it again.
