Chapter
6: Dueling Club
Minerva
announced at dinner that the dueling club would be starting that evening and
the students should meet Ginny and Draco on the seventh floor at the tapestry
of Barnabas the Barmy. Ginny and Draco met afterwards the walked together up to
the seventh floor. When they got there Draco looked confusedly at the blank
wall opposite a tapestry of a wizard being clubbed by a number of large ugly
trolls in pink frilly tutus.
“Ok Professor Weasley, what do we do now? Are we
going to crowd the wee ones in the hall or what?” Draco asked her with a hint
of the sneer he effected when he was a student.
“Just wait Draco. I need you to trust me on this
and your help.” Draco cocked an eyebrow at her request and motioned for her to
continue. “Harry said tha...”
Draco interrupted her with a derisive laugh. “I
just knew that some how you would drag Potty into this.”
Ginny just sighed and pressed on with her
explanation. “As I was saying, Harry said that we have to walk by here three
times, focusing on what we need. Can you handle that Malfoy?”
“I’ll try anything and when this fails can we
just go back down to the great hall?”
Ginny just huffed and grabbed his hand. They
walked turning back at the window, then at a suit of armor that seemed to have
replace the vase that Harry had told her about. Each thinking about what they
needed for the dueling club.
An oversize polished door appeared in the wall
as they passed the third time with a soft pop. Ginny grinned as she felt Draco
startle at the soft noise. Ginny turned the brass handle to reveal a large room
with a padded floor to provide enough room so that students didn’t start hexing
ones other than their partners, a raised platform suitable for demonstration
and a first aid kit for patching up the accidents that were bound to occur.
There was also a shelf full of books on dueling, curses, hexes and counter
curses.
Ginny looked around and smiled. The Room of
Requirement was just as she remembered it from whenry sry started teaching
Dumbledor’s Army, the group the Golden Trio had formed in Ginny's fourth year
when the ministry had relegated the Defense Against the Dark Arts classes to
book learning with no practical training. Ginny said as much to Draco who had
been part of Professor Umbridge’s Inquisitorial Squad.
“I remember now, we almost got the lot of them.”
Draco smiled at the memory. “We never did find the meeting room again. Now, I
guess I know why.”
“But you didn’t did you and all of them got off
with nothing more than a couple of detentions.” Ginny looked up as students
started to shuffle into the room in groups of twos and threes. “Get ready Draco
here come our shining pupils.”
Draco grinned condescendingly at her and put a
comforting arm around her shoulders. “Don’t worry love, I won’t be too hard on
you. I promise our duel will be quick and easy.”
“What ever you say, Professor Malfoy.” Ginny
retorted with the sweetest of smiles and shrugged him off.
Slowly the room filled with students who looked
at the two teachers in anticipation. Many had heard stories of their teachers
exploits while they were students and their heroics during the war with
Voldemort. The children were looking forward to seeing their teachers in
action.
Draco decided that he would begin the meeting as
he thought that he had more experience in dueling that the mere woman beside
him. ‘What can she do to me, she’s just a girl.’ Draco thought to himself. When
he looked out on the students he saw the tight knot of the Weasley cousins
sitting together beaming at their aunt. When he looked over at Ginny he caught
the wink that she sent to the youngsters. He was some what surprised when they all
nodded at her in a kind of silent understanding and each of the children
laughed softly when they turned their focus to him
“Welcome to the first meeting of the Hogwarts
Dueling Club. This is meant to be fun and NOT a a way to settle petty
differences. If any one is caught dueling it will be one hundred points from
your house and a month of detentions. Now then Professor Weasley and I will
start off with a demonstration of proper dueling form. Ready, Professor?” Draco
smirked at Ginny across the platform.
As one, they nodded their heads to each other then raised
their wands as if their wands were swords in front of them then swept their
arms to the side. Ginny locked eyes with Draco and deliberately licked her lips
breaking his focus in a haze of lust which allowed her to spout off a couple of
quick hexes be fore he could recover. Ginny had first called “Impedimenta” which
stuck Draco‘s shoes to the floor and then she quickly called out “Babelen”.
Draco then started to sputter as the hex he was trying to cast came out in a
mish mash of intelligible syllables. Ginny took a quick look at the silent
students watching the “show” and saryinrying degrees of shock and surprise.
Ginny gave Draco one last evil smile and called out one last hex; “Changen
Canarias”. With a crack where the
illustrious Draco Malfoy once stood there was now a large yellow canary with a
very septic expression. Starting with a few snickers, the room soon broke out
in raucous laughter. Ginny let him suffer only a coupleminuminutes be fore idly
waving her wand saying “Finite Incantatem”. Within a moment Draco molted
and was left standing in a pile of bright yellow feathers.
“All right my lovelies,” Ginny said with only a touch of
laughter in her voice. “That is how you win a duel by playing dirty. You though
are going to learn the correct way. You are first going to learn to disarm and
block.” She then proceeded to instruct the students in a simple shield charm
and the disarming spell. After she and Draco paired the students off and got them
practicing Draco confronted her among shouts of “Expelliarmus”.
“That was a dirty trick.” Draco said to her with more than a
little bit of a smile in his voice. “So who taught you how to duel?”
“Who do you think taught me with those hexes? I have six
brothers, Draco. As a group they decided that their baby sister should be able
to defend herself.”Ginny smiled. “Then at university I was the intercollegiate
champion.”
Draco’ss wis widened at this revelation and felt like a
complete idiot. He raised his hands in defeat and gave Ginny a smile. “Ok, I
deserved every one of those hexes but if you ever turn me in to a canary again
I will not be responsible for my actions.”
Smiling widely at one another they wove their way through
the students ng cng clarification and instruction where needed. Soon they
called a hto tto the meeting as it was nearing curfew for the students. When
the last student was on their way to their respective common rooms Draco walked
hand in hand with Ginny to her rooms.
“I am sorry for what I said in there. It was horribly
pompous of me to automatically assume that I was the better dueler.” Draco said
as they walked up to her door.
Ginny waved away his concern and turned to say goodnight
when she was swept up into Draco’s arms. For a moment there was that same
searching expression he had given her as a girl then her eyes fluttered shut as
his lips captured hers. Her hands snaked up his back and buried themselves in
his hair. She shivered as his hands trailed down her sides and settled on her
hips and pulled her closer into his body. The kiss was everything that she
remembered. It was as if a case of Filibuster’s fireworks had exploded in her
mind.
A sudden fit of coughing broke the two lovers apart. Draco
and Ginny looked part way down the hall to see Fred and George Weasley standing
not ten feet from where they were embraced. The red-headed twins had identical
looks of ‘brotherly’ concern on their faces and both were fingering their wands
as if trying to decide whether or not they should put them to use.
“Now then Malfoy, care to explain why you have your hands on
our sister.”
