Home is Where the Heart Is
Chapter 5: The Last Supper

Much to Remus’ relief, this moon’s transformation came and went in a much easier fashion than the others. Even the transformation itself seemed less painful. Sure, it still hurt like hell to have his human body change into that of a wolfen form, but there was a subtle difference this time. He couldn’t be positive, but something told him that Severus was playing around with the Wolfsbane Potion, as each batch truly seemed “better” than the last. He thought to ask the potions master, but then thought better of it. He’d only scowl and deny it anyway, thought Remus with a grin. His “friendship” with Severus was tenuous at best, and at this point, with him being the only other staff member at Hogwarts his age, indeed, the only staff member within 20 or so years of his age, Remus thought it best not to take anything for granted.

He entered the Great Hall for dinner that night, having slept through most of the day. He was aware that he looked worse than he felt. There were times when he couldn’t bear the looks of pity some of the staff gave him, even though they meant it with the best of intentions. He was what he was. Perhaps that’s why he sought out Severus’ company. Snape was what he was also, and made no excuses for it. There were only a few staff members present, the rest were arriving the following day, with students set to arrive the day after that. There was an extra place set at the staff table, one that was soon filled by the smiling Nymphadora Tonks. Tonight she had green spiky hair and matching eyes. Remus sighed. She was a good person, he knew, and a talented Auror for the most part, but she was also infernally optimistic and unbelievably graceless. She was also a metamorphmagus. She could change her appearance at will. Remus had worked closely with her in the Order of the Phoenix, but he wondered if he really knew the true Tonks, or if everything with her was an appearance that could change in a heartbeat.

“Well, hello all,” said Tonks brightly, “hello Remus, Severus…”

Severus scowled and grunted a greeting of sorts. Remus knew how much Tonks aggravated him. He smiled slightly and returned Tonks’ greeting.

“Aggravating girl,” mumbled Severus, “as I said, better you on this mission than me. One of us would not come back.”

Remus stifled a chuckle as he glanced at Severus’ dark scowl. There had long been rumors that Severus Snape just didn’t like females, that he took misogyny to a whole new level. Remus had never seen him like that. He’d actually tended to be one of the better mannered wizards, holding open doors and pulling out chairs for the female staff and treating them with respect and equality. Remus had heard talk of the potions master having even been involved in a relationship with a woman described as “absolutely beautiful, smart, and more than a witch”, but something had happened, something big, and he knew it had something to do with Voldemort’s downfall. No one discussed it much, though, just a quick mention by Poppy one night at dinner when Severus had heard something through an open window that caused him to leave the room abruptly.

“Poor boy. Can’t bear to hear the raven crow anymore since she left…” she had said. Later on, Remus saw hittiitting by the lake, looking into the sky. There was an aura of sadness around him. Remus did not approach, nor did he ever ask again about a relationship. Some wounds were too raw to ever heal, he supposed. Still Severus carried on, adding one more wound to his collection of battle scars.

“So, wolfman,” said Tonks, interrupting his thoughts, “ready for our adventure?”

Severus snorted into his soup, “Yes, Lupin, it should prove to be quite the adventure. If you can survive Nymphadora.”

Tonks looked at him with a smile, “Ignore Professor Snape, he’s just cranky,” she said.

“I’m beyond cranky, you silly girl.”

“I’m sure glad I’m not going with you.”

“You have no idea how mutual the feeling is,” said Severus with a glare.

“You’ll leave tonight,” stated Albus, “you won’t be able to apparate directly in, I would suggest apparating to these coordinates,” he handed Remus a slip of parchment, “and going in the rest of the way by foot. It’s a few days’ journey, I’m afraid, but I’m not willing to risk whatever shields, wards, and warning devices they have up. Once in the compound, you’ll have to take down their shields and wards so your backup can apparate in directly, should the need arise.”

“So, we open the place wide up once we’re in?” asked Tonks.

“I would suggest placing your own devices up. You’ll have to do this with the utmost stealth,” Albus reminded them.

Again, Severus snorted, “And you’re sending TONKS? Stealth is hardly her strong suit.”

“Maybe not, Severus,” said Albus, leveling his own glare at the professor, “but her ability to change form may be extremely important in the liberation of the prisoners.”

“Fine, it’s your decision.”

“Would you rather me send you, Severu

“No thank you, carry on. Ignore me,” replied Severus with a small shudder.

Albus completed the instructions and following a meal and a large dessert, Remus fwed wed Severus to the dungeons to gather together healing potions for the prisoners.

“I really do not envy you,” said Severus, as he packed up vials and jars of liquids and ointments that he had recently brewed, “still, you might get something out of it.”

“What do you mean?”

“She clearly has an interest in you. Has for awhile now.”

“She’s just a girl,” protested Remus.

“That means nothing in matters of the heart.”

Remus looked at Severus, “Matters of the HEART?”

“I do have one, you know, in spite of rumors to the contrary,” he looked at Remus for a moment, “perhaps ‘heart’ was the wrong term to use in this instance. Perhaps it would have been more fitting to say ‘matters of the loins’.”

Remus chuckled, “Definitely a better term. I’ve never thought of Tonks in either way, though.”

“Smart. Very smart. She is profoundly annoying,” commented Severus as he packed up the last of the bottles, “Stay safe, Remus. We’ve lost too many good people to this battle.” Severus shook Remus’ hand, leaving Remus somewhat speechless. Severus Snape had just used his given name.

“Thanks Severus, see you soon. And try not to scare my 4th years too badly.”

“I’ll give it my best,” Severus replied with a smile, one that quickly faded as he busied himself with his cauldron.

Remus took the dungeon steps two at a time as he quickly shrank the potions and stowed them in his new backpack. He slipped his wand into his pocket, glanced at Albus and Tonks, and grinned.

“Guess we’re off then,” he said.

“Take care,” said Albus, giving them both a quick hug. Minerva followed suit, and Remus and Tonks took off down the drive to the gates of Hogwarts where they disapparated.
