Transfiguration of the Living

Another chapter for you where we move the plot a bit further. I wonder if some of you can guess where I am going to plot wise. This baby is finished to the last chapter so humour me and tell me what you think is going to happen.

5. Transfiguration of the Living

The next morning Harry felt rested for the first time in weeks and was in a considerably better mood even explaining the situation to his friends without spilling Snape's secrets.

“You mean you see Snape's dreams?” Ron asked clearly horrified.

Nodding Harry followed his friend to their last lesson before lunch which was transfiguration. Both sat down at their desk to the back and pulled out their book.

“I am learning to prevent it though,” Harry answered as he tried to remember homework. “Do we had homework?” he asked Ron when Hermione turned around.

“Harry, we are writing a test today about variations on transfiguration of the living. Did you forget that? Professor McGonagall told us two weeks ago.”

Now remembering something along that line he was forced silent when the teacher entered the room, making all textbooks and notes floating to the front of the room.

“As I told you last week we will write a short test today about what we discussed during the last weeks. It is fairly easy so do not worry- if you learned and paid attention this should be no problem for you. Ms Brown please hand out the papers so we can begin.”

Staring at his empty piece of parchment Harry tried his hardest to remember what they had talked about in the last weeks but came up blank. In the first weeks of the school year he had found himself daydreaming a lot but surely he must have paid attention now and then.

Peeking at Ron he saw him writing something down. Not bothering to decipher his handwriting Harry turned to his parchment. Re-reading the first question he tried to concentrate on that question and suddenly he drifted some place where exactly this information was stored, among many others.

Not really caring whose mind he was accessing Harry began to eagerly write down the answers and when the text was collected by McGonagall he felt pretty confident that he had done well.

At lunch as he bit into the ham sandwich he peered up to the teacher's table and was not surprised to find Snape who was staring at him blankly.

There was something about his eyes that threatened to pull Harry in when Seamus asked him something about quidditch and so he had to look away.

He just wanted to rise to join his classmates for some relaxation in the common room when he felt a heavy hand on his shoulders. Not at all surprised when it was Snape he could see the barely concealed anger in the elder wizard's eyes.

“Mr Potter, follow me.”

When he spun around Harry weakly waved to his friends and followed the potion master into the dungeons to find himself in his office on the same chair as last night.

Snape stippled his fingers against each other and something about his attitude warned Harry that something was amiss.

“What happened in your last class before lunch?” His voice was even and calm not giving anything away.

Harry thought about that question. “We wrote a text in Transfiguration,” he finally ended up saying.

Snape nodded as he kept his eyes on Harry unnerving the boy.

“Let me guess- you were ill prepared and decided to cheat and access a more capable mind than your own.”

Guiltily Harry lowered his head. So McGonagall had noticed it, which was no real surprise to Harry.

“I am sorry and I am going to apologize to Professor McGonagall later.”

When for a while nothing was said he looked up to find Snape staring at him obviously contemplating something.

“You think you pulled that information from Professor McGonagall's mind?”

Now confused Harry nodded, aware that not even Hermione did know so much about transfiguration, so it must have been his teacher's mind he tapped into.

Again for a while nothing was said and Harry wondered if he should leave but then Snape leaned back, obviously having come to a decision.

“I was naturally gifted in potions during my time here in Hogwarts, something that caused considerable envy in other students but there was one other subject I was quiet capable in, even enjoying to read about it on my own.”

Once again Harry nodded not really sure why Snape was telling him this. However before he had time to consider that, Snape continued.

“That subject was Transfiguration Mr Potter and I accumulated a considerable knowledge in that area during the years.”

Beginning to understand where this would lead and not liking it Harry kept silent.

“It was my mind you tapped into this morning and I wonder how, as it is almost impossible to use legillemency on somebody who you do not face.”

When it was clear he expected an answer Harry shrugged.

“I do not know Sir. I concentrated on my will to find the knowledge and suddenly it was there. I did nothing special and even though I realized I was using somebody else's memory I had no idea it was you.”

Snape's black eyes stared at Harry until the elder wizard nodded.

“Very well Mr Potter, you may leave. However I have notified Professor McGonagall about your cheating and you will be adequately punished at her discretion. And please for the rest of the day, try to stay out of my mind- you are giving me a headache.”
