Chapter Five

Lucius prodded her into the mansion gently, as he could tell that she was more than a little nervous. It was right at that moment that her personal force field popped up, knocking him back. He went forward casually knocking on the magical shield. The echoing of his action had her spinning around, a blush blooming in her cheeks. She wanted the barrier to drop, but if anything it became stronger.

“You need to relax,” he told her. “Miss Granger…Hermione, please, I know that you are scared being here, but until my probation is over this is the only place we can go to.”

“The memories…” she breathed.

“I know. I have horrid memories that took place here as well,” he answered. “That mad wizard didn’t just torture you in my family estate.” He shuddered. “Though Merlin knows you have reason for the terror, as well.”

“What did he do to you?”

“He raped…” but he couldn’t finish what he was saying to her. Before he knew what was happening, Hermione had taken his hand into hers.

She let out a harsh gasp, looking straight into his eyes as his memories poured through her mind unfettered of the time the dark lord took over his house and life. He caught her as she fell back, her small frame shaking as she was now clutching at him.

Lucius knew that there was no way to stop what she was going through. He scooped her up, carrying her over to the nearest bedroom. He sat in the bed with her cradled in his arms, rocking her as he did so. It wasn’t until he felt her going lax in his arms that he knew that she was finished going through his memories.

Lucius’s arms went tighter around her, as Hermione sobbed into his shoulder. She moved so that her face was now pressed into the side of his neck.

“I’ll protect you,” she whispered hoarsely. “If you protect me.”

He let out a shaking breath, nearly kissing her head. He didn’t know what to expect as far as her reaction went, but this hadn’t been it. For a short time he thought she would have told him that he deserved it. The thought that she could feel sorry for him also crossed his mind, but the truth of it was that only lasted for mere seconds.

She lifted her head, looking into his now opened grey eyes. Hermione caressed his face, her thumbs going over his eyebrows to his temples. Absently her fingers combed into his hair, feeling the texture.

“What now?” she asked.

“First, lunch,” he murmured. “Then I’ll show you where you’ll be staying while you’re here. And then, then we train.”

Hermione hit the ground, feeling the cushioning charm keeping her from being hurt. Squeezing her eyes, the young witch sat up on the floor. She opened her eyes, seeing the regal hand held out to her.

“Why are we doing this?” she asked him as she took his hand.

“The dueling focuses your powers and helps you learn control,” he told her as he helped Hermione to her feet. “And that, imp, is what you need—control. You cannot go about accidently performing magic like some juvenile witch who has never seen the inside of Hogwarts.”

Hermione sighed heavily as she knew that he was speaking the truth. “But do you have to keep knocking me on my ass? I know I’m well developed back there, but there’s a limit.”

Lucius stifled a smile as he said, “Then I suggest you become a better duelist, my dear.”

“What in the name of Merlin is she doing here?” They stopped and looked over to see Draco standing in shock at the doorway to the dueling arena that Lucius had set up. “Is this some sort of sick joke?”

“Draco, calm yourself,” Lucius told his son as he stepped off of the stage. He strolled over to him. “I would like you to meet my new student, Miss Hermione…”

“I know who she is!” Draco snapped. “What is Granger doing here?”

“As I just told you, she is my student,” he repeated, this time temper tightening his voice.

“Her? A student of what?” Draco looked over to Hermione, who was sipping on water as she was watching them. “What are you after, Granger? If this is your way of screwing money out of my father…”

“Really, Malfoy, you must give your father more credit. If all it took was fucking the man, he would be a pauper by now,” Hermione said dryly, gaining a crack of laughter from the older Malfoy. She looked over to Lucius. “My ass is sore and you need to speak to your son. Can we take a break?”

He nodded, saying, “Come back in fifteen minutes.”

She strolled out without another word, leaving Draco and Lucius alone.

“Please tell me you aren’t fucking that mudblood!” he demanded. “If you need a whore…”

“Oddly enough, my boy, she isn’t my paramour. She is, as I am now saying for the third time, my student.” He went over and took up his water. “And as long as she is a guest at least make the effort to call her ‘muggle born’?” He rolled his eyes. “I don’t want to hear her complaining.”

“Why is she here? It’s not like you are a professor of any sort, father,” Draco asked him. “And I know for a fact that she knows how to duel…”

“Wandless dueling,” Lucius cut him off. “It would seem that the brightest mud…muggle witch of our age has a magical inharitance that has never been seen before. That being said, Severus called me to help. Seeing as I owe him, thanks in large part to you, I had no choice.”

Draco’s face turned a bit red. “You owe him for yourself as well.”

“I know.” He looked over to Hermione walking back into the room. “I said that you had fifteen minutes off…” But he stopped talking when he saw that she was shaking and her pallor was too pale. “What’s wrong?”

“I touched a chair,” she muttered, going over to the stage. She sat down on the edge of it and put her head into her hands. “A very bad chair.”

Lucius went over to her and rubbed her back. “The next thing we must train you for is blocking. You picking up any strong memory by touch is unacceptable.” She looked up to him. “Go to your room. Training is over for today.”

With a shaky nod, she left the room. Frowning Draco looked over to his father. “She can pick up memories by touch?”

Lucius nodded.

“And what else?”

“Nothing you need be concerned with,” he told him, as he got to his feet.
