Draco Malfoy was staring at the ceiling in the rented room he had taken in Knockturn Alley. He never imagined his life would have turned out so badly. He believed that the Malfoy family loyalty to Voldemort would ensure safety and ultimate power. However the family even his aunt probably his most devoted servant, was singled out for humiliation their home taken over by Voldemort, virtually prisoners in their own mansion. His mother could not stand it any more and forced Voldemort’s hand publicly defying him; He killed her without a second thought. His father was a shell of himself.
Perhaps even half mad. He had to be to be so obsessed with his best friend’s concubine Hermione Granger. It was not unusual for the elder Malfoy to lust after Muggle borns, something exotic and forbidden in his world. However up until this point he would not have dreamed of betraying his friend whom he trusted enough to name Snape Draco’s godfather. Obsessed to the point where he tricked Hermione into bed with him. Draco was forced to drug Hermione with an herb to make her believe she was with Snape to make the encounter painless, his father was vicious.
Lucius is especially vicious when his conquests resisted him and Hermione suffered enough, even though she does not remember it. His former classmate accidentally killed her friend Harry Potter by a spell gone wrong scaring her both physically and mentally. Voldemort won easily after that killing or imprisoning those that opposed him. It was too much for Hermione to take on top of the death of her parents her mind broke and she retreated into her mind devastating Snape. In her mind her side won, her parents where alive, her friends were alive and she was Hermione J Granger- Snape.
Sadly for Snape it was not the case. He was legally married to Anna Zabini for Voldmort’s plan to breed “suitable” wizards of proper blood. The wild-haired witch was essentially a slave who had no rights, not even the right to marry. Snape was allowed to keep her as a reward for his loyal service. The older wizard bonded with her in the old way, the only type of marriage he could ever perform now. Draco could tell that he loved Hermione like no other and was truly in love with her. He only married another to appease the Dark Lord.
Draco was filled with dread and regret and sorrow thinking about his godfather who was one of the few people in this world he truly liked and respected. He had no illusion about what would happen next, he would be an orphan soon, it was just a matter of time. Quite frankly he could not blame him for being angry at what his father did or for what he did for that matter. His intention was show mercy to Hermione even though he never cared for her or her heritage and ended up hurting her worse than his father could have.
He did not have time to measure the potion before giving it to her. If he did he would have seen that he had given her too much and was poisoning her. Hermione now lay in what Muggles called a coma for the unforeseeable future. Snape postponed vengeance and risked ill will from Voldemort to personally attend to his beloved witch. It felt like an eternity ago that he used the drug on her when in was in fact only one day and a half. On the way home he had run into a ghost of the late Professor Lupin.
The ghost was Professor Lupin’s scarred, cynical identical twin brother Romulus Jerald Lupin. He had a plan to end this reality by going back to when things went so horribly wrong. Viktor Krum one of the men that took up the cause when the heads of the order ended up on the dark wizard’s wall, had a time turner. He could do nothing about it since he and his cohorts where captured and put in jail. If they were not dead now they would be very soon which left the unlikely duo of a Death Eater and a Phoenix, crusader.
The ritual to guide the time turner to two years in the past was a dangerous one and it would incur the Dark Lord’s wrath. However he had nothing to loose, he was dead either by Snape’s hand or by Voldemort’s hand. He was a Malfoy and Malfoys where masters of their own fate. He took one last visit to his home packed his things and joined Lupin in an inn in Knockturn Alley to get what was needed for the ritual. They would and rest for the night before their long journey to Victor’s homeland Bulgira in the morning.
