The character of Lucius Malfoy belongs to J.K.Rowling. I am only borrowing him for a while. No copyright transgressions are intended and no profit is made.

Chapter Five - Bonding

Olivia asked the elf to show her how to find the route back to the drawing room and walked beside the little elf a few seconds before asking her, “What’s your name?”

The little elf said, “My name is Minnie, Mistress.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Minnie. I hope we’ll get to know each other better soon,” Olivia said,” to which the little elf just looked at her oddly.

Olivia thanked Minnie for her help, and rejoined her father in the drawing room. He looked a question at her. “Let’s go out to the terrace first,” she said enigmatically. They had noticed the many portraits who actually conversed with them both in the drawing room and in their sitting rooms. Olivia wanted to talk to her father without possible tattletale portraits.

“Well?” her father asked as the French doors out to the terrace closed behind her. The White family had not been entirely forthcoming with Wizard Malfoy in their negotiations.

“I think it will be okay,” she replied. “He is very complex, very hard to decipher. He has a great emotional range with the major ones currently being anger, sadness, and fear. Fear seems to ride him the most. But when I was able to touch him and hold him, his predominant emotions changed to desire and lust. The others were momentarily blocked from his psyche. In time I feel his desire and lust could move forward into love. He does have the capacity for it, but he’s walling that part of himself off very effectively.

She bit her lip, “The other reason I wish to stay and marry him is I have just now bonded to him.” She smiled at her father’s dismay, “He will be a very difficult bondmate, but now I have no choice. As an empath yourself, you know what it means. I’m permanently linked. I didn’t expect that at all. I was going to enter into a union unblessed by a true empathic match for mother’s sake, but I guess the Goddesses have blessed me with a bondmate after all. I’m sorry, Father, but it was over and done in an instant. I didn’t see it coming.” Olivia didn’t tell her father that it was just as well, since she’d fallen hard for Lucius anyway.

“Does he have an empathic bond with you, then?” James asked optimistically. He hoped his daughter could at least have a good marriage if she had to live so far from home.

“No, none at all – yet. He is protecting himself emotionally from everyone. There is a great deal of hate and fear overwhelming any other emotion. He likely won’t connect with me on any meaningful level for years.”

She went on, “I may not ever have the kind of bond you and mother have, but that is not of prime importance to me any more. He is the most important part of my life now. And,” she added thoughtfully, “He apparently has very strong healing powers as his gift. He hasn’t tapped into them very well, though. My impression is that he really doesn’t know much about his gift.”

“I guess the education over here dwells more on mastering the basic and advanced levels of wizardry and witchcraft rather than exploring the innate abilities of individuals. A difference in priorities, I guess,” James said.

“I think he’s too damaged inside to find his healing power yet. I’ll try to soothe his bitter emotions to let his gift emerge.” Olivia then gave her father the worst of her news. “He’s a very strong and stubborn person. But he’s also dangerous. I don’t think he would want to marry me if he knew I was an empath. His finding out anytime soon could mean a very unpleasant time for me. And tainting his bloodline with empathic genes may make him either feel vastly superior or homicidal. I don’t know which, but the bonding is complete, so I haven’t any choice any more.”

“I understand. We’ll keep it a secret then.” James White kissed his daughter goodnight and they both returned to their rooms, James to call his wife with the news of the marriage. The wizarding community in the U.S. had found a faster way to communicate between their long distances. They had designed a magical adaptation of the Muggle cell phone that worked quite well. The older wizards were not happy, but the younger ones wanted to move with the times.

Lucius had a miserable night. He felt completely unsettled and couldn’t relax. His emotions were running riot. He finally created a slumber spell to help him fall asleep. He never indulged in them because he didn’t like being in unnatural repose, but he decided tonight needed to be an exception.
