~Chapter five: The truth about David~

Isis went up the stairs and changed into her nightshirt. She lay on the bed that had been chosen for her and drew the hangings. She saw Sirius’s face swimming in front of her eyes when she closed them, but she had such a nice walk with Severus. Isis sat up and took out a photo album of her friends in New York. It was midnight in England so it was still a decent hour in New York. She took her small box of floo powder and went down to the common room.
The fire had burned low and there was a small figure picking up litter in one of the corners. Isis blew air into the fire and watched it slowly come back to life. Then she saw that the small figure was a house elf. She chose to ignore the hardworking servant. She needed to talk to some one. She put some floo powder in the flames and said, “Silver Hawk common room, Liberty Academy of Wizardry New York, United Sates of America.”
Isis put her head through the flickering green flames and saw her friends, Nina, Phoebe, and Zoë. Isis smiled they had obviously just returned from dinner. “Nina. Phoebe, Zoë.” Isis whispered.
The three of them turned. “Isis!” They shouted in unison.
“How is England?” Nina asked.
“Is the food as horrible as it’s supposed to be?” Zoë asked.
“England is great.” Isis answered. “As for the food I didn’t eat much. There are two guys here that I like and I was being a bit flirty with both of them.”
“Naughty girl.” Phoebe chided playfully.
“But I’m such a good bad girl.” Isis said fluttering her eyelashes.
“So what’s up?” Nina asked.
Isis noticed that her friend was just a thin as Remus from the night before. “Well, there is a small problem. One of the guys I like is really handsome, but lives in a personal hell and I’m not sure that it’s not just lust. The other guy is really mysterious, but he’s got a bad rep. He’s supposed to be a real jackass.”
“Well what matters more looks or personality?” Nina asked.
“Personality of course.” Isis answered, “…but I can’t help but wonder if I don’t like the handsome one for his personality. He’s really nice and works really hard for what he has. He’s a protector though. We’d probably bump heads.”
“Do you want to try with either of them?"
“I’m trying with the mysterious one already.”
“Whoa, so soon?” Phoebe inquired with shock. “But you’ve been at school what three hours.”
“Four.” Isis corrected. “Besides I met them both on the train.”
“Who were you more attracted to?” Zoë asked with a smile. “I’ll take the left overs.”
“I’m more physically attracted to Sirius, the handsome one, but I like Severus’s mind.”
“Be strong in mind and the body will follow.” Phoebe said with a smile.
Everyone turned to her.
“What?” Phoebe asked. “It was on my statement cookie last night.”
Isis giggled with the others. The idea of statement cookies was a bit of an inside joke from their first night at Liberty five years ago. They had a magnificent feast followed by fortune cookies with statements like, “You are brave and bold. Go and seek good fortune.”
“So you think I should stick with Severus?” Isis asked regaining her composure.
Everyone but Nina nodded.
“Follow your heart Isis.” Nina muttered. “You’ve never been good at following your head, it’s not a good idea to start when it comes to men.”
Isis nodded. “I’m still confused, but I’m so glad to see all of you.” She let her shoulders drop. “I’ve really missed you.”
“Well luckily we’re allowed to use floo powder even on holidays so we’ll still be in touch and all.” Zoë said with a crocked smile. “Besides, David looks really pissed when ever you say anything. It’s funny to watch actually.”
“How is he doing?” Isis asked.
“Well,” said Nina, “He’s been insufferable. He kept asking me when you were coming back…”
“Evidentially he still wants to fuck you.” Phoebe said bluntly.
Isis sighed. “Well as much fun as that sounds like, I have to stay pure…”
“We know, we know. A druid priestess must remain pure as to keep in touch with nature. She may only lose her purity for true love; this will be her honor and her curse. We do remember History of Magic lessons you know.” Zoë said stretching. “God, I ate way to much food tonight.” She added.
Isis laughed at her friend. Zoë had a tendency to go off on tangents and get angry when people couldn’t follow the conversation. Zoë had lost the point of so many threads over the years it wasn’t worth keeping track of anymore.
Nina looked into the flames. “I have an idea Isis.” She said. “Why not come here sometime. Use the floo powder. That way we can still see you in person, but you can easily get back to Hogwarts.
Isis turned and saw from the corner of her eye that the house elf was now watching her rather intently. “I’d rather not break any rules right now. Remus is a Prefect and so is my roommate Lily.”
“What’s a prefect?” Zoë asked.
“They’re like the student heads of house.” Isis answered.
Zoë nodded. “Prefect sounds nicer then student head of house.”
Isis smiled wryly. “I would have thought Nina would be the one to say that.”
“I do not have a crush on Remus. I’ve hardly spoken to him lately. I just said he was kind of cute in a very British way.”
“That is the lamest excuse I have ever heard.” Phoebe said. “I would have said something like, but it would have ended tragically because of what I am.”
Nina turned chalk white. “Not so loudly!”
Isis heard footsteps and noticed the house elf had vanished. She said good-bye and pulled her head from the fire. She wasn’t sure if she should be communicating in this manor at such a late hour. She had just pulled her head from the flames when Professor McGonagall the head of Gryffindor house swooped in.
“Using the floo network for no good reason at this late hour is very displeasing Miss Lupin.” She said sternly. “Unless you have a very good reason for using it I suggest you go to bed before I take away house points.”
“Am I allowed to use it at all?”
“Professor Dumbledore would prefer if students did not use the floo network for anything outside of an emergency. Also tomorrow is your first day of classes. I recommend that you rest.”
Isis decided not to argue she’d just have to write to Nina, Zoë, and Phoebe. Besides, there was nothing keeping the three of them from contacting her through floo powder. But what was David so mad about? Isis wondered. Was he really just mad because Isis hadn’t slept with him? Isis had a feeling that there was more to it, but decided that sleep would be of better service then writing a letter would have been just then.
In the morning Isis was surprised to see Nina’s screech owl drop a letter in her sausages. Isis tore it open and her jaw dropped.
Dear Isis,
First and foremost we miss you and wish you could have come back to Liberty this term, but coming through the fire was an awesome Idea. Maybe once a month we can try to arrange a time to do it, but Phoebe, Zoë, and I want to do it since we have more floo powder between the three of us then you do in that little box.
Secondly there is something you need to know about David. He’s been reprimanded a few times now because he was denied student head, or Prefect as they would call it in England. He threatened poor old Professor Bards and a little first year girl. Plus he said something about wanting you no matter what the cost was, so keep your eyes peeled for any sign of him if your mom ever lets you come back. Honestly we’re all a little worried about him. Do you still suspect him of leaking information to the Dark Lord? Because I think you may be right. He really never seemed the spying type, but people can sometimes change, or show their true colors (probably more to the point in this case). Please be careful over there and write back soon.
-Nina Lewisham
So it wasn’t just her that suspected there was something fishy about David. Maybe he saw sex as a way to gain power, like Remus had been talking about. If he slept with her she’d be obliged to tell all her secrets to him. Isis had just finished the letter when the class schedules came down her way. “Divination first thing?” she muttered. Isis heaved a sigh and bolted through the rest of her meal and raced to find the north tower.
She eventually found it and was congratulating herself on getting there before the rest of the class when she consulted her watch. “Oh no, I’m late!” She sighed hopelessly and tapped on the trap door to the classroom.
A pair of hands reached down and pulled her up and Isis found her self-facing a very stern looking man who had obviously been handing out some kind of notebook. Isis took a seat next to Sirius and had one of the notebooks tossed at her. “Theses are, blue books. They are common in muggle schools for writing papers, and you will use them to the same effect. You will keep a dream diary and write your partners interpretation of that dream. I ask that you find your partners now and try to interpret the last dream that they remember.”
Sirius smiled at Isis who nodded, but this left James in an awkward position. He decided to ask Lily.
“Evans? Do you want to be my partner?” James asked. `
“No.” Lily replied shortly. “Go to Sirius.”
“Can’t. He’s hooked up with your mate.”
Lily looked back and shot Isis a look of disappointment.
Isis could feel her face growing hot. She knew what her latest dream meant. It was always the same dream. She kept thinking about the night that David tried to go farther with Isis then she could let herself go. Isis wasn’t sure if she wanted Lily to know that there was a third guy on her mind, she had already poked fun at the fact that Isis liked two men that were at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Isis sighed. “I think maybe I should work with Lily before she sees to it that James goes to sleep for good.”
Sirius looked over at Lily who was looking daggers at James. “Yeah maybe we should.”
Isis and Sirius immediately rescued James from Lily’s looks of disgust.
“You should listen to Lupin mate. She doesn’t like you as much as you like her.” Sirius said then dropped his voice to a whisper. “In fact I don’t think she likes you at all.”
Just then Lily stole a look at James before returning to her work.
“Then again…” Sirius said.
James smiled. “I wish I knew how to make her really like me.” He muttered.
Just then the professor interrupted them. “Dreams Gentlemen! What are your dreams?”
“Well Professor Morris, I hope to become a seeker for the English national quddich team.” James said with a smile.
“Cheek Mister Potter! You just lost ten house points. And earned a detention. What about you Mister Black what are your dreams?”
Sirius didn’t want to make James sit a detention alone so he too decided to make light of the question. “I don’t think my dreams are meant for certain ears sir. I am at that age.”
“What age is that Mister Black?”
“The age where I dream about women laying on the Riviera sunning themselves with out any inhabitation and the water…”
“Enough!” Professor Morris spat. “That is enough Mister Black.”
“You don’t want to hear the rest? I mean I think that even someone without the inner eye could interpret that one.”
“Yes Mister Black they could, and you sir do not have the inner eye.” Professor Morris walked away leaving Sirius feeling a bit exposed, but James had stood by him the day before with Regulus.
Isis looked back at Sirius and winked. She felt that he had been honest. Dream interpretation was simple. You just had to look for clues. Professor Morris made it all together to difficult and Isis chose to take on Lily’s dream with out the use of her book.
At lunch Isis sat down next to Sirius. “Hi.” She said.
“Hello.” Sirius said back attempting to reach the Sheppard’s pie.
“Allow me.” Isis said. “Accio Pie.”
The pie came flying down the table and landed flush with Isis hand.
Sirius gapped at her. “Wow, that’s some good charm work.”
“A bit of a specialty of mine.”
“I need to ask you something.”
“You can ask me anything.”
“Who’s David?”
