Harry and Lialani stepped out of the stairwell. Neither had spoken. At least up until then.

“Harry? Do you know what happened up there?” Lialani asked, a bewildered expression on her face.

“I do know that I watched as you destroyed my least favorite teacher’s classroom. Which was completely cool,” Harry grinned at her.

“Yeah, I know. I just wish I had been completely conscious when it happened.”

“You mean, you were like passed out?”

“Sort of. When I was in the the hospital wing afterwards, I couldn’t remember a thing that had happened.”

“Nothing?”

“Zip. Dumbledore said it was because it was the first time my powers had surfaced, and the sheer force of them knocked out my acting conscious, and that left only my subconscious.”

“Wow, you are one powerful girl!”

“Yeah, so Malfoy, beware!”

They laughed. But their laughter was cut short as they noticed that Professor McGonagall had spotted them from down the hallway and immediately rushed to them. When she realized that it was Lialani and Harry in front of Dumbledore’s office, she knew that Lialani’s power had been revealed.

Minerva hadn’t been there when her power showed, but as she was Lialani’s Head of House, she had a right to know. So she watched the incident unfold in the Pensieve, breath hitched in her chest. She remembered reading about people who had those powers, but they also had other powers. If Lialani had those other powers, she would be subject to a prophecy made 300 years ago that said the next Magnesius would turn evil at a very young age and grow up to be a very powerful Dark wizard. However, Albus felt assured that they could stop her from converting over to the other side. Over the next four years, Lialani would spend her summers at the castle, being tested for the remaining powers. And in her fourth year summer, she proved to be a Magnesius. So her fifth year summer she worked for the Order.

“What are you doing out?” she asked sharply.

“We were just coming out of Professor Dumbledore’s office, Professor,” Lialani replied.

“And why are you dilly-dallying? The feast is over so you will have to go to your common room.”

“That’s where we’re going,” Harry answered, and he tugged Lialani behind him as he walked hurriedly in the direction of the common room.

“Oh, Potter, Turowsky?” she called.

They stopped reluctantly and slowly turned around.

“Next Saturday, report back to Professor Dumbledore’s office to talk about your training.”

They looked at each other, bewildered. Then realization dawned on Harry: Minerva was in the Order so of course she would know. In addition, she was their Head of House so she would know about Lialani being a Magnesius.

Someone tugged on one of Lialani’s pigtails. When she turned around to see who it was, she immediately shrank back. It was the Ravenclaw she datedated last ear, Steven Hauffman, and she had broke up with him because he was abusive. Ever since then, he never left her alone, and when she used one of her powers to send him flying into the wall when he cornered her one night, the only reason she got out of punishment was by saying her power had reacted to her fear.

Harry immediately noticed her fear, and patted her arm.

“And who are you?” asked Steven, angry that someone else was there.

“A friend of Lialani’s. But who are you?” Harry asked back.

“I’m an old friend of hers. Name’s Steven,” he replied.

“Steven…The Steven who was hurtled into the wall last year?” Harry wondered.

“The one and only. And that little bitch” he pointed at Lialani, “is the one the caused it. I’ve come for revenge.

“No, you haven Har Harry stated calmly. He may have just met her, but she was stirring feelings in him that he once knew with Cho, and he wasn’t going to let anything happen to her.

“Who says?” Steven put his face r in in Harry’s.

“I do,” Lialani said.

“Oooh, what are you going to do, send me into the wall again? I don’t think so,” and with that his hand came up slowly to slap herwevewever, before it could move to her face, Steven gaped as Lialani went slightly transparent and walked right through him. He looked at Harry, who didn’t look at all surprised. He looked back at Lialani, she was completely transparent and she had become ghost-like. He took off running, not looking back, running as fast as his legs could carry him.

Lialani grinned at Harry as she became solid once again. However, the grin faded as her eyelids fluttered closed and she crumpled to the floor. Harry managed to get to her before her head hit the floor. He picked her up easily and headed for the hospital wing. But before he got there, he ran into Severus.

“Potter! What are you still doing out?” he hissed. Then he noticed the limp form in his arms. “Miss Turowsky! You didn’t let her use her powers, did you?”

Harry looked away and shifted his weight from foot to foot. Severus took this as a ‘yes’.

“You fool! How could you let her?” he hissed as he snatched her from Harry’s arms. “I’m going to take her. Twenty points for being out of your common room and for being stupid. Now get there before I deduct more points!”

Harry gave one sorrowful look at Lialani and then raced off to his common room.

Severus looked down at tnconnconscious girl in his arms. He sighed resignedly, and headed to the hospital wing.

On the way up, he turned a corner and collided with Albus.

“Albus, Potter let her use her powers!” Severus exclaimed, holding the limp form tighter to his chest.

“Well, Severus, you can’t yell at him to much. He wasn’t expecting her to faint,” Albus admonished.

“But he still let her do it!”

“And that’s what he’ll get punished for. Now calm down, Severus.”

Severus’ eyes had grown dark with anger and something that Albus couldn’t place.

“Well, at least she’s going to the infirmary. Poppy knows about her powers so when she wakes up there will be no questions asked.”

“That will be easier on her. But, Albus, I need to get a potion from my quarters that Lialani’s going to need to take when she wakes up.”

“Then give her to me and I’ll bring her to Poppy. You go on down and get that potion.”

Severus nodded and handed the unconscious Lialani to Albus. The old man smiled at the gentleness in which Severus handled her. The only other times he had seen the Severus exhibit such care was when he was brewing potions.

“What’s so funny?” Severus snapped after he made sure that Lialani was nestled safely in Albus’ arms.

“Nothing, Severus,” Albus just smiled and headed up to the hospital wing.

Severus watched him walk away with the girl, a whirlwind of emotions rushing through his mind. He couldn’t understand what possessed him to blow his top when he found out that Lialani had used one of her powers and fainted. Of course, there was always the chance that she might use her powers too much and collapse into a coma, but he had never cared before. At least before Lialani. He found himself captivated with toungoung blonde, always keeping an eye on her in class and it was not with a professional eye. She surprised him with her knowledge of potion-brewing and ingredient-properties, surpassing the knowledge of even know-it-all Hermione Granger. He would be lenient on her if he found her wandering the hallways in her invisibility cloak after curfew. She would seem surprised when he offered to walk her to her common room, but after a few times he had caught her, they would begin to automatically begin walking together. Everyday, when he set out on his patrols, he would secretly hope to run into her. And she never failed to be out there somewhere. They had such intelligent conversations, and she seemed to be able to match him his intelligence in every branch of potions, no matter how advanced.

However, even though he enjoyed her, she never ceased to annoy him with her positive out look on life. He didn’t understand how the young girl could be so optimistic about her life. Brightness and optimistic ways were the complete opposite of him and yet he still found himself drawn to her. He couldn’t stand the lightness and airiness of her and he still sought her out at night. Perhaps he didn’t care as much at night because, at night, she was always in a dark mood. He ed ted that her perky and bubbly personality during the day might be an act. But she never brought it up so he never asked her about it.

Severus found himself in his potions’ storeroom and searched the shelves for the potion Lialani was going to need. He found it, and clutched it to his chest, knowing that he found an excuse to visit her. He made a mental note to tell Albus that he wasn’t going to bring the potion up yet. He sank into a chair in his bedroom, potion vial still held tightly to his chest, and waited for sleep to overcome him, helping it along with a bottle of firewhiskey from the table beside him.

------------

Upstairs, Albus laid Lialani on one of the infirmary beds. She shifted slightly, but in a second was still. Albus sighed, not relishing the task of punishing young Harry.

“What happened, Albus?” Poppy asked as she bustled over to the bed where the unconscious girl lay.

“She used one of her powers fai fainted,” Albus replied.

“Well, she should be all set when she wakes up,” Poppy said, tucking the girl in snugly.

“Alright, but Severus needs to bring up a potion that she’s going to need to take when she wakes up.”

“Okay. When is he going to bring it?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Well, ask him, because I need to know so I have it when she wakes up.”

Albus nodded, and started toward the door when something behind him stopped him in his tracks.

------------

Sus jus jolted awake at the sound of frantic knocking at his door. He stumbled to the door, dropping the glass of fire whiskey he held in his hand, and opened it. Lialani stood there, eyes frantic and hair wild.

“Lialani?” Severus gasped.

“Professor Snape! Where am I? What’s going on? I’m really confused and I feel like my brain is melting!” she cried, wobbling on her feet.

“What are you talking about?”

But before she could answer, Albus came running down the corridor.

s Tus Turowsky!” he called.

She spun around, but lost her balance and stumbled backwards, right into Severus’ arms. They closrounround her immediately and she calmed instantaneously, her entire frame relaxing.

“Albus, what is going on here?” Severus asked, holding her tightly to him.

“She woke up, but was in a fr. Sh. She screamed when she saw us, and leaped off the bed and ran right out the door. I followed her all the way down here down here, and I must say that I was shocked when she stopped at your private quarters,” Albus replied.

“I don’t know how she could have known where they were, but at least she’s here and she can take that potion,” Severus ignored the look the Headmaster gave him.

Lialani turned in his arms and looked up at him. “I need to take a potion? Where is it?” Her eyes had calmed, and there was no fear in them, as most students had, only trust, absolute and complete trust.

Severus nodded and let go of her. She sighed softly, but immediately shushed when Severus returned to the door with a small, slightly translucent purple pear-shaped glass vial, filled with a white liquid. The vial was covered in small, glittering gems. Lialani fell in love with it immediately, partly because it belonged to Severus himself.

“Um, Professor Snape, when I finish the potion can I have the vial?” she asked, taking it from him.

Severus looked surprised that a student wanted something he owned, but nodded, histnestness for the girl showing through as he agreed to give up one of his possessions to her. Albus’ face betrayed nothing, but inside he was shocked that this man that he had known for twenty years and had never given a single thing to anyone else except for his allegiance was allowing a student, a Gryffindor one at that, to take one of his belongings.

“Oh thank you, Professor!” she cried and downed the potion in a few gulps. But just a second later, her eyes went wide and she began to tremble violently, tremors wracking her entire frame.

Severus took her in his eyes arms again, smoothing her wild hair. Slowly, her trembling hedged to a stop and she stepped back out of his embrace with a slight hesitation.

Albus watched the entire thing, his face blank but an all-knowing twinkle was in his eyes.

“Professor Dumbledore, I think I should go back to the hospital wing and rest for the night, just to make sure that I’m completely ready for classes tomorrow,” Lialani said.

He nodded, and she looked relieved.

“Thank you, Professor Snape, for the potion and the vial,” she murmured, meeting his gaze but regretting it almost immediately.

His dark, ebony eyes lit up as she looked into them, and from the reflection in them she could tell that hers did, too. She felt a heat rising in her cheeks as she stared into Severus’ eyes. Warmth spread through her.

He gazed into her eyes, the chocolate brown one looking warmly back at him and the black color of the other one drawing him in. He saw a sparkle fill her eyes as they met his. The blush creeping up caught his notice and the same warmth that spread through her swept over him at the exact same moment.

“Ahem,” Albus coughed and the two jumped, looking at him almost guiltily. The blush deepened on Lialani’s face and Severecamecame extremely interested in a spot on the ceiling. Lialani nodded a goodnight to the two men and fled down the corridor. Severus watched as her long blonde hair streamed out behind her as she ran.

“Severus, just what does that girl mean to you?” Albus asked softly.

“Why, Albus, she’s just a student! That’s all she’ll ever be to me!” Severus exclaimed.

“Are you sure, my boy? Because I think that something’s lying just beneath the surface, waiting to burst through.”

Severus blinked, wondering just what Albus didn’t know.

“Severus, Lialani doesn’t hate you. She did not struggle when you caught her today when she stumbled, nor did she struggle when you held her as she experienced some of the effects of the potion. She could have pushed you away both times, but she didn’t. She allowed herself to be comforted by you. If she had pushed you away and wanted nothing to do with you, I would be worried. However, she seems to respond to your fondness, and I’m not going to worry. But nothing can happen, Severus,” Albus said.

“I know, I know, Albus. And I won’t let anything happen,” Severus assured him, but his heart was objecting.

Albus nodded, stroking his beard thoughtfully.

“Well, Albus, it is late. I would like to get some sleep before classes tomorrow,” Severus interrupted his thoughts.

“Oh, yes, of course, Severus. Good night,” Albus headed down the hallway in the opposite direction that Lialani took.

At the corner that Lialani had disappeared around, a silent invisible re sre stood. As the shield of invisibility fell, it revealed a shocked Harry Potter.
