Chapter 5: Thoughts to Live By

Two days later, a small group of Order members sat around the dining room table at Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Harry now owned the house and it still remained the Headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. Through the war and the aftermath, the security was never breached, in spite of the best efforts of Kreacher, the departed house elf who served the Black family and of old Mrs. Black herself, still residing in a portrait that none could remove from the premises, not that they hadn’t tried. In fact, Severus once attempted to blast the portrait off the wall only to have been thrown back into the opposite wall, earning himself a short stay in the hospital wing for his efforts. Mrs. Black was mostly silent now and Kreacher was dead, so there were no more saboteurs within the house. Usually, the Order met to discuss minor pockets of Death Eater-like violence, which were few and far between and easily quelled, or to discuss any hints of powerful wizards rising up through the dark. They met rarely, but Molly Weasley looked after the house, keeping it clean. This day, however, they were meeting for a very different reason. Remus Lupin had come home, though the Remus Lupin currently in a private room in the hospital wing at Hogwarts was no longer the Remus any of them had known. Albus, Severus, Hermione, Harry, Tonks, Poppy Pomfrey, Arthur Weasley, and Kyla Brennan were meeting over tea and discussion.
“Miss Brennan, have you every witnessed Remus speaking?” asked Poppy.
“Never. I’ve only worked with him a total of three time, but other mediwitch assistants and the medical personnel at St Mungo’s who have treated him for various ailments throughout the past several months have never heard him speak either,” replied Kyla, “and please, call me Kyla.”
Severus heard Hermione breathe a sigh of relief at Kyla’s answer and looked at her quizzically.
“I was afraid it might have been the C-factor potion that robbed him of his voice and of his magic,” she said, responding to Severus’ glance.
“His magic is still fully intact,” said Poppy, “he is just unable to access it, most likely because of the block on his memory.”
“Poppy,” asked Albus, “Is his los voi voice something physical?”
“Partially,” answered the mediwitch, “there seems to be something blocking both his voice and his memory. It’s not anything I’ve seen before, I’m not sure if it’s a curse, a potion, or something else. If we can unblock one, though, I believe that the other will follow.”
“Severus, Hermione,” said Albus in a commanding tone, “I would like for the two of you to look at the possibility of a potion that can unblock his voice, his memory, or both,” they nodded, “Poppy, I want you to monitor his physical condition, perhaps assign Miss Weasley to watch him when you’re not available and look for other sources for this blockage,” Poppy nodded, “Harry, I want you to locate Ron and the two of you run through your old contacts for information on what happened to Remus after the final battle,” Harry nodded, “Tonks and Arthur, look through the Ministry records for anything resembling what happened to Remus and perhaps contact BilIf tIf this is a curse, we could use his assistance.”
“What can I do, Sir?” asked Kyla.
“St Mungo’s has a great many resources. Tap into those. I know Remus was treated there, but not for this, correct?”
“Correct sir, only for minor injuries and the lycanthropy study. He refused admission and requested outpatient status in the study.”
With hasty goodbyes, the Order members left for their assignments, Hermione and Severus apparating back to the gates of Hogwarts.
So,” began Severus, “where should we start?”
“I’ll start by thoroughly examining Remus,” said Hermione, “do you still have that potion we worked on in my seventh year?”
“The one to determine if an illness is potion related?”
“Yes, that one.”
“Of course I do. It was useful during the final stages of the war and Poppy’s used it several times to determine treatment for some of the more…bizarre potions accidents.”
“Brilliant,” said Hermione, a smile lighting up her beautiful face, “I think we should start by working on that potion. I know it’s only useful within a week or so of receiving a potion, but perhaps if we can strengthen it…”
“I’ll get to work on that right away,” replied Severus, sweeping her into a deep kiss, “you are truly brilliant, you know.”
“If you keep telling me that, I’m going to get a swelled head,” giggled Hermione, breaking away from his kiss, “let’s get inside and get to work.”
“Yes yes,” agreed Severus, reluctantly relinquishing his hold on her, “but tonight, I want you to promise me that I will have your undivided attention for at least an hour.”
Hermione smiled at him slyly, “Since when does it only take an hour?”
“You have no idea what I have planned.”
“Hmm,” mused Hermione, as she entered the castle ahead of Severus, “you’re dead sexy when you’re all mysterious,” she commented, not noticing the two Hufflepuffs walking past.
At the sound of their snickers, Sev dre drew himself up to his full intimidating stature and fixed a glare at the two students, “10 points each from Hufflepuff for snickering at a Hogwarts staff. Now, move on.”
“I am so sorry, Severus,” said Hermione, glancing at him worriedly. She knew how important his privacy was to him.
“As if it were something to snicker at, the thought that I might be considered ‘dead sexy’”, he snorted, “how insulting.”
His comment was met by the tinkling of Hermione’s laughts shs she headed to the Hospital Wing. Severus grinned and turned on his heel toward his lab.
Hermione climbed the stairs to the hospital wing, steeling herself for the sight of Remus Lupin. He had been kept in a sleep state until the Order and the medical personnel decided what was to be done. When Poppy said the word, the charm would be lifted and the healing would begin. His mind was so very fragile. Hermione knew that the times ahead would be hard and that she would need Severus more than ever, both as a research partner and as a life partner.
Hermione halted on the stairs. She had never actually stopped to contemplate her relationship with the Potions Master beyond the here and now. Not in more than a fleeting manner. She realized that she thought of him as a permanent fixture in her life. She wanted to wake up every morning for the rest of her life next to him. She didn’t want to sneak through the floo to his chambers or have him sneak through the floo to hers. She wanted to be in the open with him. Only a few people at Hogwarts even knew about their relationship. Oh, she had no doubt that some suspected that there was more to them than just a professional relationship, they did all know that she ended her marriage to Harry, and Ron certainly voiced an opinion of her to his family. Hermione wanted to stand in the window of the Astronomy Tower and yell it to all of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade that she, bookish Hermione Granger, was madly in love with Severus Snape. She sighed. She doubted Severus would be pleased with that sort of behavior. She smiled wistfully and continued on her way.
Severus stopped inside the door to the lab. He looked inside at the pristine marble counters and the perfectly ordered equipment. A smile crossed his lips as he thought of his time spent there with Hermione. He couldn’t imagine the room without some sign of her presence. He looked nd and and found it, a hair band on one of the countertops. He was tired, though. He was tired of feeling like he was sneaking about with a married woman. She hadn’t been married in months. When she was at St Damien’s, they were freer than they were with her at Hogwarts. At Hogwarts, propriety was expected. There were days when he longed to have everyone know about their relationship, when he wanted to wake up with her and not have to slip back to her quarters via the floo or vice versa. He would love to be able to walk the gardens hand in hand with her without having to ensure that there were no students present. He wanted Hermione in his life forever, and having had the life he had, he knew how short and unexpected it could be. >Wha>What was he waiting for?” he thought. His future was a wavy haired beauty with warm brown eyes and a smile that could light up the darkest recesses of the dungeons. The worst she could do was say no. The worst she could say was wait. The worst she could do was break his heart. And his heart had been broken before. Severus sighed and opened the small hidden panel in his desk. He pulled out the small blue box that he had been holding onto since April. The symbol of his undying love and hope for the future was contained in the box. Tonight, over dinner in his quarters, he would ask Hermione Granger to consider spending the rest of her days with him.
