Chapter 5: Memories Good and Bad

Draco sat in a dark corner of the staff room replaying the events of the week before. Was he so like Lucius that Neville confused him with his father? Was he tainted the short time he had spent in Voldemort’s inner circle? Draco absently began to rub his forearm where the Dark Mark had once been magically burned into his flesh. It was just before the beginning of his seventh and final year at Hogwarts, he had just turned eighteen and his father had been talking of nothing else for weeks. Lucius brought Draco before Voldemort and he had prostrated himself before the barely human thing. It had taken everything in him not to retch on the Dark Lord’s shoes when the Dark Mark began to burn itself into his skin. He could remember the pain he had felt that night, Lucius had been so proud of him. Draco had basked in that pride for weeks until his first Dark Revel a month later.

A family of muggles had been brought to Malfoy Manor; a man, his wife and their young daughter and son. All the things that he had said over the years to Potter, Weasley and most of all Granger came crashing down around his ears that night, as every taunt about using muggles for sport happened that night before his eyes. At one point Voldemort had commanded him to prove his loyalty. Even now behind his closed eyes he could see the fear in the eyes of the girl who was just a year or two younger than he, the fear that over took her as he stepped up and raped her along with the others. He knew that night and even over the ensuing days shuld uld be put to worse things than repeated rape. Pity, remorse and shame overcame him and he did the only merciful thing he could think of. With tears of shame running down his cheeks he took her head in his hands kissed her gently on the forehead and with a quick jerk he snapped her neck. Before anyone could react he whipped out his wand and had fired off 3 killing curses effectively ending the torment of the entire family much to Voldemort’s and his father’s displeasure.

He had paid dearly for his act of mercy that night. Almost immediately his own father had cast the Cruciatus and Draco fell to the floor in an agony all of his own. It was then he knew he had to speak with Dumbledor as soon as he got to school. For the remaining days before school he was kept locked in his rooms seeing no one but the house elf that brought him his meals. On the way to King’s Cross his father had lectured him that he and the Dark Lord expected better from him and that at the upcoming revel at the Christmas holidays he was expected to behave as he should. During the term he was also given a few tasks, least of all was to cause Potter and his friends to distrust and ultimately hate one another. Voldemort had seen time and time again that the trio were stronger together and the way to finally defeat the brat Potter was to destroy that friendship.

Going to Dumbledor the beginning of that term was the best thing he had ever done. He had unburdened himself to the headmaster with every intention that he should be handed over to the dementors at Azcaban for the final kiss but to his surprise his head of house had entered and had offered redemption another way. Severus Snape had explained about spying for the Order of the Phoenix for the last twenty years. There it was his redemption as a spy for the light, Snape had spent extra time helping him to assume the role and to help him devise a plan to make it look as if he was working to complete his task. Potter and his friends were in on the plot and had acted accordingly so that by the Christmas holidays the three of them were the object of every gossip in the school and even staged a few very convincing arguments during mealtimes and one fist fight that had left Harry and Ron bloody and in the hospital wing. Weekly reports were sent to Lucius and Draco received glowing praise for completing his mission with such success. Draco remembered the surprise on Voldemort’s and his father’s faces when the ‘Golden Trio’ had faced them as one and the further fury when he and Snape joined them at their side. Draco had the pleasure of disarming and placing his father in a full body bind. Draco had smiled serenely as the Aurors had taken his father to Azcaban.

Draco contemplated the things that were missing from his own life now. He needed love in his life. Not love from the silly girls that pursued him every where he went, he knew that they wanted nothing more than his money and the power of the Malfoy name. He needed someone who could look past his crimes to see the goodness inside. He wanted someone to love him just for whom he was. Someone who would love him just for being Draco, “does such a person really exist?” Draco mused to himself with his head in his hands.

“Does who really exist?”

Startled, Draco glanced up and looked in to startling green eyes. “What?”

“You said ‘does such a person really exist’. I was asking what you meant.” Ginny explained setting a teacup down in front of her as she took a seat next to Draco.

Draco flushed a bit. “No one. I was just thinking and didn’t realize I said anything out loud. So, what brings you here?”

“Well, this is the staff room and I am staff.” Ginny smiled at the uncomfortable man. “I have a free hour now before my next class. Speaking of classes how are your potions classes going?”

“They are going well though every class seems to have someone who feels the need to blow their cauldron up.” Draco answered with a smirk. “Actually your nieces and nephews are all doing quite well. Charles is doing quite well in Advanced Potions if he keeps it up I want to recommend him to the Ministry for their Potions Research Department. I have already talked it over with McGonagall. As soon as midterm exams are in we will know for sure.”

“Oh wow. Draco that is wonderful.” Draco watched with amusement as the red-haired beauty quivered with excitement. “I don’t suppose that I could tell my mother could I?”

“Not yet. I shouldn’t have even told you. During the Yule holiday Charlie’s parents will be getting a letter from McGonagall.” Suddenly Ginny swept up and enveloped a very surprised Draco in a rib crushing hug. Before letting go completely Ginny raised a hand to Draco’s cheek and looked searchingly into his soft blue eyes.

“Thank you Draco,” she said simply. What she did next surprised Draco beyond anything he could imagine. She leaned down and put her lips softly to his. Smiling wide Ginny stepped away and left the staff room but not before looking back and giving Draco another small smile prior to letting the door shut behind her.

Draco raised his hand to his lips where he could still feel the press of her kiss. Never had such a chaste kiss affected him.

Ginny marveled at her own daring as she walked back to her class room. She hadn’t planned on kissing Draco but now that she had she couldn’t get the silly grin off her face. It was as if she was a young girl again who had just gotten her first kiss or some idiot had cast a Cheering Charm on her when she wasn’t looking. She was sure that her students thought she was a candidate for St. Mungo’s by the end of classes that afternoon

Later that evening before dinner in the great hall Ginny was in her sitting room enjoying a glass of sherry when her thoughts strayed to the past. Ginny thought back and remembered that her first kiss had been from the blonde, blue eyed Head of Slytherin House. He had snatched her in to an alcove while she was on her way to charms class in her sixth year. He had pressed her back to the stone wall with his Quidditch hardened body pressed into hers. He searched her eyes for a long moment and then dipped his head. He kissed her lightly, his mouth opened and his tongue licked her lower lip questing entrance to hers. She had parted her lips for him and the kiss deepened, their tongues had seemed to dance. When they parted he had looked deeply in to her eyes again almost searchingly. He gave her one last kiss, not more than a brush of his lips to hers, before he slipped away into the still busy hallway. He never looked at her again that term or at all before he graduated along with Ron, Harry and Hermione. After all these years she wondered why he never even spoke to her after that kiss. Ginny sunk down into an over stuffed armchair in front of her fireplace after she realized that she had been pacing the length of her sitting room for the last 10 minutes and gazed into the flames as if they could give her the answers she needed to questions she didn’t know how to ask.

After a few minutes Ginny gave her self a shake finishing off her sherry and prepared herself for the Dueling Club meeting that night. She dearly hoped that it would turn out better than Gilderoy Lockhart’s did in her first year. She shivered at the thought of her first year. How Tom Riddle’s diary had seduced her. How it felt like she had been raped over and over again that year. She had had nightmares for years afterwards that Riddle would come for her again, that she would once again fall under his spell. The nightmares didn’t come anymore, they hadn’t since she had heard about Harry’s victory. Ginny smiled at the thought of Harry. She had had a crush on him for so long but as crushes go it didn’t last long but the time that he spent in the Camber of Secrets gave them a special bond and she knew that if she ever needed anything from him that he would move heaven and earth for her.

“Ok Virginia Weasley, enough maudlin thoughts. Get your arse in gear and show these children what is is to duel.” Ginny giggled at her own pep talk but she was sure of one thing. She intended to knock Draco on his hot Slytherin ass just for fun. Ginny smirked all the way through dinner that night.
