Midnight

Lucius returned to his ‘home’ though in truth it was not a home.  It was more of a hideaway.  A convenient retreat.

He frowned, because in all his memory, this was the first time that he returned to the sounds of his children crying.

That was unlike her.  Ginny was carefully attuned to his needs, and she was well aware that any loud sound, especially crying, irritated him.

He came inside.

And he froze.

Sniffing the air, he detected the scents of his children…but not Ginny.

His heart quite literally stopped.  All sound faded, and a loud ringing filled his ears as he screamed ‘Ginny!’

He flung tores open, finding empty rooms.  She was not in bed.  The ringing grew louder and leader so that by the time he entered the twins room, he was in a rage.

They were standing in their cribs, crying.  He ignored them, could care less about them, it was their mother who was his main concern.  If anything should happen to her…

He looked around wildly, and then froze.

He saw an envelope.

And everything went black.

__

Hermione and Draco were able to locate Ginny in a matter of minutes.  He expressed irritation over having to carry her, because he did not know the area—there could be flying predators—but she insisted.  It would go faster.

And it did.

She was sitting beneath a tree, looking morose.

Hermione suspected she had come here, and just like her, had become lost.

But her face lit up at the site of her.

Ginny!

Hermione ran to her, embraced her.

‘Where were you?!  What happened?! Were you hurt, I am so happy to see you!  I am so happy you are alive!’

Ginny was shaking from the force of her tears, and Hermione pulled back, took the time to examine her.

Her hair had grown much longer.  It was half-way down her bac.  She looked older.  Her body more feminine.  She had…grown up.

Of course she would have.  She was sixteen the last time anyone saw her.

Draco was impatiently pulling her elbow, ‘We must leave, now.  We found her.’

Ginny turned white the moment she saw Draco.  She probably was wondering why he was here, since the last time she was around, he was serving the Dark Lord.

Hermione cast him a sullen look, but obeyed. She had made a promise, and so he had.  This was his end of the bargain.

‘It’s alright Ginny.  Draco was pardoned.  You won’t have to worry about him.’  Like me.

The walked, Draco refusing to carry both of them.  But it was not very far until they were outside of the forest.

Her wand was lost, and Ginny did not seem to have one either.  So Draco lit the way, using a spell neither girl had heard of.

‘What happened?’ She anxiously asked.

Ginny was still crying, more so than Hermione.

‘We have to hurry.  I-I was k-kidnapped.’  She cast a nervous glance at Draco, ‘Hermione, I-I’m afraid that I may have createed some trouble.’

She glanced at Draco, then back at her.  ‘What do you me—‘

‘Hold,’ Draco suddenly spun on his heel, and looked at Ginny.

His eyes widened in something like surprise.

‘Hermione, get away from her, now!—‘

One minute she was standing, the next she was on the ground.

Feeling…like she would die…

She looked down at herself but there were no injuries.

Why then…

She looked around, and gasped.

Draco had been cut, diagonally, from hip to shoulder.

He was bleeding profusely, and doubled over.

In front of them.

Oh god.

In front of them was Lucius Malfoy.  In full veela form.  He had Ginny in his arms, and was shaking her, screaming, hissing: ‘LYING, DECEIVING, WHORE!’

He released her, only to backhandher.  She stumbled away, nearly falling.

She was terrified, ‘Hermione, RUN!’

She wanted to, but she couldn’t.  Because she could hardly move.

Wait.

What was it about mates?

They were connected.  After the ritual, their lives were…

She turned a wild eyed look to Draco.  She was going to die with him!

She felt a very real fear come over her.

She tried to stand, to go help him, but it was hard,

And you touch what is mine?!!!’

Lucius stalked towards Draco,  who was standing to meet him, claws extended—

They moved to quickly for her to see, but she knew one thing:

Draco was losing.

He was on the forest ground.

Bleeding..

There was so much blood.

Hermione began to crawl towards him.

In the distance she could hear Ginny scream.

Hermione hated Draco, she really did—

But she couldn’t let him die.

Not now.

She had a baby inside of her.

She collapsed, finding it difficult to move.  It was an awful pain, as if it were her who had been cut.

She blinked dizzily.

She felt someone take hold of her hand.

Draco was holding her hand.

Behind her, without having to look, Hermione knew..she knew something equally awful was happening to Ginny.

I am going to kill him…’ He pressed his face into her breasts.

So this is how it ends? She thought sadly.  In the middle of nowwhere, not by the dark lord but by Lucius Malfoy?

…and then I am going to punish you…for your foolishness….’

She squeezed his hand back.

She truly, truly hated him.

But if he died, her baby died, because she died.

And maybe…just maybe…she might feel bad if he died here.

What was the matter with her?

Lucius’s entire body was covered in blood, and Hermione could not escape the horrifying feeling that something truly awaful had befallen Ginny.

Steal MY woman?’

He raised his hand—

She hoped that it did not hurt...
