Synopsis: This story takes place after my previous story “The Lion and The Serpent”. In this story Harry and Draco are on their way back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when they are ambushed by Death Eaters, leaving Draco half dead. So distraught over Draco’s possible death Harry wishes he was never born . . . but will his wish actually come true?
His hands were still warm to the touch, even though he was barely alive. The moments after he was attacked all seemed a blur, and now Harry found himself at Dracbedsbedside at St. Mungo’s. In the middle of the battle with the Death Eaters, all the noise they made attracted the people from the near by Hogsmead. With the crowd steadily approaching the shack the Death Eaters fled, leaving their unconscious brethren behind. Everything after that happened in almost a flash. Tonks, Harry and Draco were taken to St. Mungo’s, where Harry now sat, next to his unconscious body. The healers had already done all they could, but by the looks in their eyes, Harry knew the prospects weren’t good.
Even if by miracle Draco did wake up, Neville’s parents were driven insane by the curse, and now most likely, so would Draco. Draco’s face looked peaceful as he lay there, almost of if he were just sleeping. Harry bit down on his lips as he sat there, looking into his face, trying to hold back the tears of rage and sadness he felt. Another person he had grown to love was almost destroyed, and now he could only sit, powerless, as htchetched them die. Suddenly the door opened and Harry found himself in a tight in brace.
“Oh Harry are you alright?!? I came as soon as Dumbledore told us what happened.
Harry remained silent, not having the words to say what he was feeling. Behind Mrs. Weasley stood Mr. Weasley, along with Professor McGonagall, Professor Snape, Tonks, and Dumbledore himself.
“Harry, I’m afraid we need to talk to you about what happened on the bus” Dumbledore declared.
“Can’t thait ait until tomorrow? He’s had quite a shock” Mrs. Weasley asked.
“We must get this out of the way now I’m afraid, while his mind is still fresh on what happened. Now Harry, Tonks has told me there was someone else there who helped you fight the Death Eaters, but she only saw him as he vanished.”
“Yeah,” Harry said as he slowly looked around at everyone watching him.
“Can you tell us what he looked like Potter?” Professor McGonagall inquired.
“I only saw him for a moment”
“Anything you could tell us would be helpful Harry” Dumbledore declared, calling back Harry’s attention.
“He wore a hooded cape that covered his head, but he was also wearing some kind of mask, it looked like silver” Harry answered dryly.
“Do you remember anything else?” Dumbledore asked, looking Harry directly in the eyes.
“There was something on his chest, some kind of symbol. I couldn’t really make it out from so far away but it looked like some kind of bird.”
Harry didn’t know anymore than that, no matter how much they pressed him with more questions. When they were finally satisfied, Dumbledore told Tonks to take Harry to the cafeteria for something to eat while they talked to the healers about Draco’s condition. It felt as if he was being ripped in two as Tonks practically dragged him out of the room.
“Come on Harry, Lupin is waiting for us up stairs and I know he really wants to see you” Tonks said as she guided Harry to the elevator.
The words that came out of Tonks’ mouth gave little comfort as the elevator rose upwards. It all just seemed to be happening again. Who else was going to die? First, it was his parents, then Sirius, and now . . . and now Malfoy. He promised Draco he would be safe, and now he would either die or lose his mind. Harry followed Tonks out of the elevator to the cafeteria, and saw Lupin pacing back and forth along near other members of the Order.
“H tha thank goodness your alright!” Lupin said as he saw them
Lupin came over and hugged Harry, and tried to comfort him as well. But Harry couldn’t be comforted as a new feeling of guilt washed over him. He wouldn’t speak; or rather he couldn’t as pit in his stomach rose into his throat whenever he tried to speak. Then, as Lupin and Tonks turned their backs to talk to the other members, Harry took his chance and walked out of the cafeteria. A door just outside the cafeteria was marked for the roof, and before Harry knew it, he was climbing the stairs upward. The cool air seemed godsend as it swept by in soft breezes. Clouds and stars began to litter the sky as the sun began to set on the horizon.
Harry looked up into the coming night and could hold his tears back no longer. Removing his glasses, Harry could only feel his heart began to break as the tears ran down his face. His face soon became cold as the wind swept over his wet face, but he he could think of was Malfoy. He would gladraderade places with Draco, if it meant saving his life.
“Why does everyone that comes close to me die?” Harry asked out to the darkening sky. “If this is all that’s meant for me than I wish I had never been born at all!”
The tears he shed became more bitter at these words, more hallow. Suddenly, Harry turned around as he felt someone nd hnd him, only to find no one at all. . .
