Not my Fault

Originally this was meant to be smut, pure smut but in the end it had plot, and what a plot. Thanks for the lovely reviews, I am glad some of you are enjoying this.

danniperson: I like some of his stories and poems too. In fact this semester I have written a term paper about the tell-tale heart.
secretedness: Oh, there will be something even better than just dreams, just wait and see.

4. Not my Fault

Snape's office had not changed much during the years to what Harry had seen the only time he had been in here, at the beginning of their second year.

Snape had left several minutes ago through a door on the left leaving Harry alone wondering how it was possible to suppress an unconsciously used ability. After what felt like hours but was probably only a couple of minutes, Snape returned his pensieve in hand.

Guiltily Harry looked away as Snape placed it on the desk. With his wand he extracted some memories and stored them inside and once he was done he sat down.

“I am afraid there is not much you can do about accessing my dreams without years of practise but there is a way to leave them at will once you are inside. However to learn the technique you need to glimpse a memory of mine. I should have placed most of what I do not want you to see in this pensieve and I want you to try accessing my mind now.”

When it was clear he was not going to say more Harry wanted to close his eyes when Snape shook his head.

“You can only use legillimency with your eyes open. Focus on me and form the want to access my mind in your head.”

Nodding Harry stared into Snape's expressionless face feeling strange when he had to face his black eyes without looking away. His skin was surprisingly smooth only crinkling around his eyes and if you looked into his black eyes long enough there were little white spots in his iris-

Suddenly Harry felt an insistent prodding on his thoughts that he tried to shake off but before long he found himself being knocked out of his seat his eyes wet with the memory of the first beating he had received from Dudley.

Snape's black eyes blazed with anger and impatience.

“You are getting distracted easily Mr Potter but you need to focus to use either legillemency or occlumency. So do me the favour and do not dwell on my eye colour.”

His cheeks flushing red with guilt Harry inhaled and stared into Snape's eyes trying to focus on entering his mind. For a moment nothing happened but then suddenly he felt himself being pulled into Snape's thoughts, seeing himself sitting opposite the potion master and feeling a strange mix of irritability and annoyance.

'I am feeling Snape's emotions', Harry wondered in awe but quick as lightning he felt something forcefully pushing him away and Snape's thoughts were sealed tightly shut.

Opening his eyes Harry slumped back in his seat feeling fatigue from the effort it took to concentrate.

“Well done Mr Potter,” Snape said uneasily, clearly not comfortable with complimenting the boy.

Harry's thoughts were swimming with the sensation of being in his mind and in Snape's at the same time. It was as if he had trouble to focus on his own thoughts.

“Exhaustion is to be expected Potter,” Snape said evenly giving Harry the time to tidy up his thoughts.

When he felt in control of his own mind again Harry sat up again and faced his teacher, nodding to indicate he was ready to try again.

“Now try again but this time when you are inside I want you to form the wish to leave again.”

Suddenly Harry remembered the first dream he had shared with Snape when he had been able to leave after some effort. Focusing on his teacher's eyes he felt himself pulled in once again now standing in front of a black manor that was partly concealed in fog experiencing a feeling of unease.

For a moment he wanted to delve deeper to find out what place this was and why Snape felt such an emotion upon being here but a warning tug on his mind reminded him what he was trying to do.

In his mind he formed the wish to leave but instead he was pulled deeper, the pictures spinning forward until he sprinted away from the house, hurt and desperation filling him. He felt a tugging but it was easy to shrug it off and change the memory. Now he was in Hogwarts in front of the whomping willow with the intent to enter it when he felt somebody holding him back.

Spinning around he found James Potter and anger rose in his chest as he easily remembered all the times he had caused him grief and shame.

“I would not go inside Snape,” James said his voice flat.

Once again there was a desperate attempt to kick him out but he was no longer Harry Potter but Severus Snape and these thoughts were his. Beginning to loose himself in further memories he finally felt walls being slammed down making pain explode in his head as he was lifted out of his seat and made impact with the wall in his back with a nasty crack.

Tears were swimming in Harry's eyes as he tried to keep conscious, keep track of his own thoughts and slowly he succeeded, focusing on being Harry and shaking off the unfamiliar emotions.

When he opened his eyes and looked up to face Snape he saw a deep scowl in his face.

“If you ever try to force memories from me again Potter I am going to be the one who makes you suffer,” Snape hissed clearly livid.

Slowly getting to his feet Harry had to lean on the wall to keep upright. Sweat was on his face and he felt the room spinning around him.

Hearing Snape getting up he inhaled harshly not understanding what was happening to him, why the temptation to lose himself into Severus- no Snape- and his thoughts was so appealing. Somebody gripped his chin forcefully and forced Harry to look into deep black eyes as he was pulled inside again.

Once again standing in front of the manor he felt a tug on his thoughts. This time giving in he slowly faded from the scene finding himself in Snape's office again.

“What happened?” he asked clearly shaken to the core.

Snape let go of him and returned to his place behind the desk. Carefully Harry let go of the reassuring wall and made the few steps back to his own seat, only to gratefully sink down there.

“I was forced to use a rather unpleasant way to throw you out of my mind,” Snape said crossing his arms in front of his chest. “What you experienced after that was your mind trying to regain control of yourself.”

A glass of water was pushed into Harry's hands and he greedily downed it in one go.

“I feel as if you pull me inside,” Harry said accusingly. “It is not my fault.”

Snape huffed clearly not impressed. “I can assure Mr Potter that I do no such thing. You are simply not focused enough to extricate yourself from my thoughts which is entirely your fault.”

Suddenly angry Harry started into Snape's blank face. his own showing his dislike.

“That's so you Snape. If something does not work it is always somebody's else fault, is it not. Like in your fifth year when your cauldron exploded, you shifted the blame on your lab partner instead of figuring out what really went wrong.”

Snape narrowed his eyes. “Do not ever think that by glimpsing into fleeting memories of me you know the truth Potter. I fear our lesson has come to an end.”

Having risen the tall frame of the potion master walked over to the door that lead somewhere else.

“We continue tomorrow after supper. And now get out of my sight!”

Not sparing one moment more Harry spun around and silently fuming with rage, he made his way to the Gryffindor tower.

The feeling of losing himself in another person was unsettling to say the least and he did not look forward to another lesson but felt he had no choice. When he entered the room he rudely pushed some fellow students to the side marching into the sixth year's dormitory. Not taking the time to change he flopped on his bed, closed the curtains with a wave of his wand and lay in the darkness until he drifted off into sleep.

This time he found himself at the lake where he spotted Snape sitting near the water, his face in a book. Carefully Harry trudged over and after a moment's hesitation he sat down to stare at the lake.

“That is a weird dream,” Harry muttered.

Snape huffed and placed the book to the side.

“I am sorry it does not please you Mr Potter but it took me two hours to create this dream with the force of my mind.”

Turning to his teacher Harry frowned.

“How can you create dreams?” he asked.

“I have considerably more control over both my thoughts and emotions than you and it is possible to stay partly awake to force my mind to stay here.”

Sighing Harry let himself fall onto his back trying to get comfortable. It was rather nice, the birds singing and the sun was tickling his face.

“This cannot be very relaxing,” he easily said.

“It is not,” Snape answered crisply clearly annoyed. “Now would you try to leave my dream?”

Sighing Harry closed his eyes and willed himself away but nothing happened. After a couple of moments he opened his eyes once again to look up to his teacher.

“It's not working.”

Once again Snape huffed. “That is not surprising considering who you are. You enjoy plaguing my dreams, take delight in seeing my most personal thoughts.”

Now annoyed too Harry pushed himself up and glared at his teacher.

“Oh come on Snape, I have no interest in seeing you have sex or anything else, But if you had not been too offended with me being sucked into your thoughts, maybe you could have taught me how to actually do it.”

“There is no such thing as being pulled into one's mind,” Snape insisted.

Harry shrugged. “Well, it happened to me twice. I know next to nothing about these things so maybe I am making mistakes but I am not doing it purposely.”

For a moment nothing was said until Snape sighed.

“You need to visualize to leave, you need to want it not only pretending to. Try to close your eyes and concentrate.”

After a moment's hesitation Harry closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on leaving until he felt himself being pulled away into darkness and sleep.
