A day out and a Dear John

Chapter 4- A day out and a Dear John
June 1, 2008
Hermione and Harry entered the Leaky Cauldron as Hermione's parents parked the car. It wasn't as full as it usually was. There were no Hogwarts students coming to get their supplies just yet. Harry did his best to hide his face as Hermione drug him into the back alley, and opened up the path to Diagon Alley.

They stepped into the Alley to find Dumbledore's death hadn't affected things that much. Wizards and Witches where still moving about from shop to shop. Harry noticed several shops he never noticed before on their way to Gringotts. The one that interested him the most was Ogdoad's Odds and Oddities.

They continued on reaching Gringotts. One angry goblin and a cart ride later. Harry scooped a bunch of Galleons and some muggle pounds into his money bag. He laughed as he saw Hermione's face. He knew he had never talked about how rich he was to her. Once he was back into the main part of Gringotts, he grabbed Robert and Jane not letting them get any money exchanged.

His first stop, of course, was the Owl shop. He told the Grangers to wait for him at Florish and Blotts knowing this would keep Hermione busy. He looked around for the perfect Owls for Hermione, and unknown to anyone one for the Grangers too. He finally settled on a barred owl for Hermione and a common barn owl for the Grangers. He picked up a ton of owl treats for the two new owls and Hedwig back at the Granger's. He had the owls covered as he paid for them and the treats.

When Harry stepped into Flourish and Blotts, he laughed at the Grangers telling Hermione that they hadn't gotten a chance to get any wizard money. Hermione had an armful of books. Harry walked up behind the Grangers and cleared his throat handing them the bag of owl treats and the two owls.

"Don't worry, Hermione. I planned on buying everything today. No peaking until later." Harry said grabbing the books form Hermione and paying for them.

They walked out several books heavier. Harry led them to his favorite place to relax the ice cream shop. They sat there eating their ice cream, and in Harry's case his milkshake. Harry grabbed up the two cages.

"Ok first up is for you, Robert and Jane. I know you don't have your own owl to write Hermione so I got you one." Harry explained.

"Harry, you didn't have to! We could always use the Owl Post here!" Jane exclaimed looking at Robert.

"I won't have it! You shouldn't have to come to London just to mail Hermione! I insist, and I won't take no for an answer." Harry told them in no uncertain terms.

Jane looked to Hermione for support, but found none. Hermione simply shrugged. Hermione knew once Harry's mind was made up that was the end of that. She watched as Harry uncovered the cage to reveal the brown and white barred owl.

"It’s your turn Hermione. I got this one for you and I have already named her." Harry said with a huge grin.

Harry uncovered Hermione's owl. It was a white and brown barn owl, and was about the same size as Hedwig. Harry watched Hermione's face light up with joy.

"Hermione meet Miranda. I chose the name from the Shakespeare play The Tempest. It means 'one to be admired'. I thought it would fit since I have always admired you." Harry rambled on.

"Thank you, Harry. I love it. You even got me books. What’s next?" Hermione said with a smile despite herself.

"Next is getting Harry some decent clothes." Robert and Jane said in unison.

Hermione and her parents pulled Harry to a muggle clothes shop. Harry didn't even know where to begin as he never went clothes shopping. Hermione and Jane took instant pity on him and sat him down next to Robert. Before they were done, they had gotten Harry a month’s worth of clothes almost all emerald or light green to match his eyes.

Harry breathed a sigh of relief when they left. He had them stop at a dinner, and treated them to a fancy diner. He refused to let them pay for anything that day. They went home having finished all the shopping.

Jane and Robert left Harry and Hermione home, and went to work. Harry went to his room, and just took a nap leaving Hermione to write her letter to Ron. She had been waiting to write the letter all day. She knew she had to be careful what she wrote so she didn't get Harry in trouble.

'Ron,

There’s no easy way to say this. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and soul searching since Dumbledore’s death. I’ve come to realize things between us are never going to work. You’ve been a great person in my life, but you’re not the person I can see myself waking up next to every day for the rest of my life. I need someone who can enjoy the same things I do. Our lives are heading in two very different directions. You have your Quidditch, and your dream of being an Auror. Then there’s me who wants to change the world by creating equal rights for all creatures. Also Ronald, I’ve come to realize that we both settled for each other. We deserve a chance to be with the people we really want instead of what we think we can get. Furthermore, I think for the time being it is better if we don’t speak to each other. We may need to go our separate ways. I know that will be difficult at school.

Your ex-girlfriend.

Hermione'

Hermione reread the letter several times to make sure it was perfect. It didn't contain what she really wanted to say, but it would have to do. She couldn’t let him know that she knew about Lavender. If she did, Ron would have thought Harry had told her.

She smiled as she attached the letter to Miranda's leg. Her only thought was how thoughtful Harry had been. It had gotten late, and she had a long day ahead of her. She couldn't wait to spend tomorrow with Harry.
