Wanting You

Chapter 4-Wanting You

Once the delicious kiss ended, Severus had a war with himself. Should he ask her to stay the night or encourage her to find her way back home? The latter won out this time, even though his body was screaming “No!” He knew that there would be another time to express his desire, but this was not the night. Willing his erection to go down, he walked slowly back to the castle. The cold night air served to chill his blood enough that he would not have those god awful night time emissions, that is not to say that he still did that, but he remembered those times all too clearly, and did not wish to repeat the experience.

Even though his body was beginning to recover from the evening, his mind had not. Sure, he had been the one to do most of the talking, but the little Hermione had said about her past had him reeling. Not to say that it was completely awful because he knew of people that had it much worse, but how the girl handled it was beyond him. She had divorced her best friend and the other abandoned her. If he had heard it from anyone else’s mouth, he would have told him that they were out of their tree. He knew that war changed people, but it really must have done a number on the Boy Who Lived. He among many others had thought that Harry and Hermione would stay close their entire lives because of the sibling-like quality their friendship had taken, but apparently not. The boy had to have his head stuck in his arse to ignore Hermione because of the divorce. Maybe there was something else going on, but he had to ask himself, did he really care enough to find out? He could not care less about the man who had been a menace in his school days, but he did care about how Harry’s behaviour affected Hermione. He initially thought it would be best to stay out of it, but his curiosity was rising.

Severus rose early the next morning and readied himself for his full day of classes, but the day would end early. He had a mission to fulfil, and thus decided to give his last class, the seventh years, a break. This would be his first time to cancel a class without assigning something or having a test the following meeting time. This would shock all of them, but they really did deserve a rest, for they were great students and worked hard. His day flew by, and when he finally checked the time, he was running late. If he was going to catch Potter, he would have to do so shortly. He attached a note to his classroom door and left. Once outside of the grounds, he apparated to the Ministry then walked straight to Kingsley’s office. He knocked a couple of times and the door opened on its own. He did not expect to witness the scene before him. Kingsley was standing and looking heated and there in his face stood Potter, who had his fists clenched, and looked as though he was going to take a swing at the Minister. Apparently, he arrived just in time. Severus cleared his throat loudly to draw attention away from the situation.

“Mr. Potter, step away from the Minister, and sit your arse down.” Harry was looking daggers at him, but he was not afraid, he could take the twit faster than someone could say quidditch. “Now, would someone like to tell me what is going on here?”

“Nothing that is your business, Snape,” said Harry, who was still glaring at him.

Severus chose that moment to crack his knuckles threateningly. “It is my business when someone is obviously threatening the Minister. Now, let me reiterate for you, sit your arse down before I make you.” Pure venom was dripping from his voice, and he was getting ready to strike if he had to.

Harry went to sit down in the corner chair which so happened to be the furthest away from Severus and Kingsley. Sure, he was angry and had seriously thought about taking a swing at Kingsley, but would not dare whilst Snape was there. He may not like the man, but he knew he was highly dangerous; his days as a Death Eater had proven that much.

“Thanks, Severus, but I assure you things are fine. Harry and I were just discussing something that had us both a little angry.”

“Do give me a little credit, Minister; I figured that much, but it appeared as though things were about to come to fisticuffs, so I intervened. It would not be prudent for the Minister of Magic to be seen fighting with his head auror. Now, tell me why the two of you were fighting.”

“Very well. We were talking about Hermione, and I was attempting to knock some sense into the boy and to get him to listen to her instead of returning her letters in cinders.”

It was obvious that Hermione had conveniently left out that piece of information the other night. So not only was the idiot not talking to her, but he was also burning her letters? Surely, whatever she had to say could not be that offensive. He had to find the underlying cause of this before something worse happened.

“Potter, is this true? Are you really that idiotic that you will not even listen to her for a few minutes of your time?”

“Look, Snape, I don't owe you or Kingsley an explanation for my behaviour. This is a private matter between me and Hermione.”

“Apparently it is true because you did not deny it.”

“I never denied burning her letters. I fail to see how my actions towards her are either of your business.”

“Potter, it is our business because we are both her friends, and obviously care more for her than you do. Why won't you hear her out? No one is saying that you have to continue being her friend, but with all she has been through with you and the weasel, you owe it to her, you dolt!”

“You are out of line, Snape! Do not call my best friend a weasel. I don't care what you call me because I am here to defend myself, but Ron is not and he does not deserve that name.”

“I will call him whatever I choose. I cannot believe that you are defending that idiot after what he did to Hermione. How could you possibly believe him and continue befriending him after all that he has done? I will never understand it!”

“What are you talking about, Snape?”

“You don’t... you mean to tell me you don’t know? How could you not know?”

All Kingsley could do was just stand there looking shocked. How could Harry not know, when clearly everyone else did? Many did not believe Hermione, but still, it was common knowledge in their circle of friends. How much had Ron lied to cover his own arse?

“Harry, if you had read any of Hermione’s letters or listened to your wife, you would have known,” said Kingsley.

“That may be true, but she was the one to screw over Ron and betray all of us. I don't owe her anything but my silence. She ought to feel gifted with that, instead of me hexing her like I want to.”

“Betrayal, Harry? How did she betray you and others? This is my first time hearing this one.”

“I am shocked that you and Snape did not hear it. Yeah, she cheated on Ron, started telling lies on him, me, and the rest of the Weasley’s, and when he confronted her on it, she snapped and said that she did not want anything more to do with him or any of us. I wanted to go and talk to Hermione about all of this, but Ron stopped me and told me that she isn't worth it, and I sided with him. If she could do that to her husband and her best friends, what would she do to anyone else?”

“If any of that were true, Harry, then we would not blame you for being angry, but as it stands, what Ron told you is a pure lie. You should have gone to talk to her and gotten the whole picture before deciding whom to believe. Wasn’t there a part of you that contained any doubt about the situation? It should be part of your instincts as an auror to question what you are told.”

“I guess I should have, but I was tired. There has been too much warring in the world and amongst my friends, I just couldn't take it anymore. So I take it that both of you know what has happened?”

“Oh, we do, but we think you need to go and talk to her yourself. There has been enough interference as it is. You do not need us trying to make your mind up for you. Now, I suggest you go talk to her. Just do one thing, keep your temper in check. She has already been hurt enough in this situation, and she does not need your issues doing further damage.”

After Harry left, they both breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe he would do what is right after all. That went better than they both thought.

Harry went back to work but gave what Kingsley and Snape had to say some thought. He never once thought that Ron might be wrong. He could not even figure out why he would not have doubted any part of what was said to him. Kingsley was right, how could he have set aside an essential part of auror training in favour of one friend over the other? He had to go listen to her side of the story and see any evidence, if she had any. He sent an owl to Ginny and left to find Hermione. He apparated to The Witching Hour now that it was open and took a seat at the bar. Maybe he would find her here, after all, it was her business.

Hermione came downstairs and onto the stage to announce tonight’s live act. It was Seamus’ band--The Aces; it was a good band. Hermione walked off stage and towards the bar where Harry was sitting. She saw him and wondered why he chose tonight of all the others available to make his presence known. She really was in two minds about him being there; a part of her wanted to see him, but then there was the other part that said it had been so long that she no longer cared. She continued her on her way, and sidled up next to him.

“Hullo, Hermione.”

“Hi, Harry” Hermione said, trying to keep the emotion out of her voice.

He turned to face her and really looked at her for the first time in over a year. She looked tired, happy, but there was a slight sadness behind her eyes, and he couldn’t help but to think that he was part of the reason for it.

“Listen, Hermione, would it be okay if we went somewhere to talk?”

“Sure. We can go to my flat upstairs.”

She led the way through the club and up the stairs. Once inside she told him to take a seat on the couch whilst she got drinks.

“’Mione, I was wondering what exactly happened with you and Ron? I got to thinking about this whole situation and realized that there was something missing.”

“It took you a whole damned year to come up with that much? I thought that you would have caught on quicker. My question to you is, Harry, why now? You seemed content in your silence, and I got used to you being out of my life.”

“I am sorry for not coming sooner. Please, I just want you to tell me so I can decide for myself who I believe without any other interference.”

“Maybe. I really don’t feel as though I owe this to you anymore, but I will tell you because we used to be friends. It started with him being distant, I was aware that most couples encounter that at some point so I was not worried, but when I talked you about it, I started to be concerned. Then the rumours began flying and I came home one night to find him in our bed with someone else. At that point, it was just over for me Harry, I knew that we would not recover from that. After we split, there were more lies spread and I just had to check out of the situation. You can choose to believe me or him, it is up to you.”

“That is the story that Ron gave in reverse. He made you out to be the devil in this. He even said that you never wanted to see any of us again. That hurt like hell too.”

“His mum and dad said something similar.”

“I can’t believe that Ron would do that to you. It is sickening the way he lied to cover himself, and what is worse is that he did his best to hurt you. He should pay for this, ‘Mione. He should not be allowed to continue to spread lies on you and ruin your reputation.”

“Just let it go, Harry, I have. I have moved on to another, and made a reputation outside of the ministry. He will pay for his lies somewhere in this life because of the rule. You get what you give, and he will.”

“Say you will forgive me for having my head in my arse?”

“I do. However, promise me that you will give us time to get close again. There has been a lot to go on in such a short span of time. A lot that you were not there for.”

Soon enough the conversation was over and Harry left as they both had nothing more to say. Sure, she had forgiven him, but they would not go back to what they had anytime soon. There was just too much that he had done, and that he never bothered to let her explain. This was not going to be something that she could let go of overnight, and he had to know that. Harry could not have come there expecting her to treat him as she used to before all of this began. They both needed to heal before they could be close again.

Severus and Hermione’s date had since come and gone and they had been on at least five others since then. At the end of each date he gave her drugging kisses that made her want him more than anything. There was one night in particular that she had to use all of the resolve that she possessed to not jump the man. They were standing just outside of the door to her flat and he had her pushed up against the wall and was kissing the living daylights out of her. His tongue was thrusting into her mouth and every now and again he would nip at her bottom lip and make her moan. He was hard as a rock and she found herself grinding into him. Whenever she did this, he would thrust up and growl into her mouth, making her hotter than hellfire. There were many times that she wanted him to come in, but he would always leave at that point, even before she had the opportunity to ask. He always left her wanting more.
