A Drink of Potion

Chapter 4: A Drink of Potion

Potions class the next morning was buzzing with the exciting events of the night before. As usual news traveled fast among the students and by the time the first class convened, everyone knew what had happened.

Apparently a first year got Malfoy in such a rage he turned the poor boy into a toad. Professor McGonagall had to rush over to help with the change-back and Professor Snape was called to help and mete out the punishment. Malfoy got detention, but everyone knew with Snape he’d get off easy. The student was changed back but there were rumors he had several warts that were not present before.

Hermione ignored the whisperings in the class and pushed her long brown locks away from her face. She pulled her homework out of her notebook and waited for Professor Snape to collect it. To her left Harry and Ron were conferring over something of which she was not part of. She stared at them hard, but they wouldn’t acknowledge her.

“Homework, Miss Granger?”

Startled, she looked up to see Snape staring down at her. She managed a half smile and handed the parchment to him. He glanced at it and she swore he returned her smile with one of his own. She flushed slightly and looked down.

“Potter and Weasley, I hope the events of last evening will not distract you from today’s important assignment. Have you homework to turn in?”

Hermione watched as Harry and Ron handed over their parchments. Snape weighed them in his hand.

“A little light, wouldn’t you say?” he said icily. But before they could reply, he turned on his heel, robes swishing and walked briskly to the front of the classroom.

“Students, today we are going to mix a simple but effective potion to remove warts.”

Snickers were heard all through the classroom. Hermione stole a look at Malfoy who was turning pink all the way to the roots of his blond hair.

Snape ignored them and went on: “Please prepare your cauldrons and turn your books to page 278.”

Hermione got her cauldron ready as Snape led them through the exercise. Eventually the murmurs and snickers died down as the students began to work on the potion. As usual she followed everything to the letter, but when Snape walked by to check her progress her cauldron suddenly cracked.

“Oh!” she cried out.

“Looks like you added too much salamander tongue. Common mistake,” Snape said, but without his usual sarcastic tone. “I’ve got one partially mixed, you can finish with it.”

Hermione exchanged curious looks with Harry and Ron as Snape presented her with his potion. A thrill went through her as Harry actually looked at her for once. Snape presented her with a cauldron and a strange smile.

“Ok, students,” he said turning away from her. “Finish up and we will test it.”

Snape went back to the front of the room. “If you mixed it right, you will see any warts disappear. If you mixed it wrong you may turn green for a few hours. Any questions?”

Some of the students seemed apprehensive about drinking the potion, but they knew better in Snape’s class. Since Hermione got a potion that was mixed by Snape himself, she drank down a gulp or two without hesitation. But the entire time she was acutely aware of the professor’s hard stare. She wondered why she was under such scrutiny.

After everyone had drunk the potions a few people turned green, including Neville Longbottom. Snape chewed him out as usual. A few more people reported that they lost a wart or two. Hermione didn’t experience any effect other than a strange tingling sensation along her spine.

“Very well, students, here is tonight’s homework.” Snape gave out the assignment and the class filed out of the dungeon.

The green students got ribbed about their mistake. Malfoy, who did not turn green, redeemed himself by rubbing it in to Longbottom. Hermione sighed and tried to catch up with Harry, but he was a fast walker and he and Ron were putting some distance between her.
