Chapter 4 Dreamless
Hermione showered and dressed quickly. She wanted to go to the hospital wing and wait for Professor Snape. She\'d sat and cried long enough. Crookshanks followed her around the entire time she was in her room. He knew that something was very wrong with his mistress, and he wanted her to feel better.
\"Thanks Crookshanks;\" she said, \"but you can\'t help me with this.\"
\"Brrrrt!\" The cat answered, and padded over to her bed, wiggling his behind before he jumped up and settled himself.
She smiled sadly in his direction and put a set of clean robes on. \"I\'ll be back later.\" She said absently, and left her rooms.
She tried to get out of the common room without being noticed; but unfortunately she ran right into Ron.
\"Moine! What happened to your face?\" He asked in shock. She had seen the bruise in the mirror and she knew it looked terrible.
Everyone in the common room was staring at the livid purple mark on the head girls cheek.
She sighed, \"Look Ron, why don\'t you and Harry come with me to the hospital wing and I\'ll tell you what happened.\"
Harry got over his shock and followed them out of the portrait hole. \"Mione, did Malfoy do that to you? I\'ll get that little piece of...\"
\"No Harry, it wasn\'t Malfoy,\" she interrupted quietly. \"We need someplace a little more private than the hallway to discuss this. Let\'s just leave it until we get to the hospital wing.\"
They followed her there and waited while Madam Pomfrey made a fuss over her. \"Oh, the headmaster told me what happened! You poor girl! I know Professor Snape doesn\'t have any briuse potions left down there, and Oh! How awful!\" She gently probed Hermiones\' cheek. \"I\'ll have to do a scan to make sure your cheekbone isn\'t broken.\"
She bustled off and left Hermione sitting on a cot with her two staring best friends.
\"Okay Hermione, what gives?\" Asked Ron. \"Snape? What\'s he got to do with this?\"
She could tell what Ron was thinking and she got very angry for some reason. \"Ronald Weasly! Professor Snape did not do this to me! He saved my life, actually.\"
She rather enjoyed the looks of disbelief on both Harry and Rons\' faces.
\"Look, I was down at Hagrids helping him with an injured owl. He noticed it was getting late and sent me back up here. I was on my way when I was attacked by a death eater.\"
Ron and Harry were looking even more scandalized than before.
\"Here?\" Whispered Harry loudly. \"But...but....\"
\"Relax, Harry. Dumbledore and Professor Snape both think he was only testing the wards. They\'ll be putting up better ones I\'m sure. Honestly, it\'s not the first time one\'s been here and I\'m certain it won\'t be the last.\"
Madam pomfrey came back with a jar of salve and a goblet of clear potion for Hermione. Hermione drank the potion while Madam Pomfrey put the salve on her bruise.
Ron and Harry watched as the purple mark faded away slowly. When it was gone, Madam Pomfrey set the jar and Goblet aside.
\"Allright dear, I need you to be very still. The potion you just took will allow me to find any broken areas in your bones.\"
Hermione sat still while Madam Pomfrey ran her wand over Hermiones cheek and then the rest of her body to be safe. She found nothing broken to her and Hermiones\' relief.
\"Allright dear, Professor Dumbledore asked that you remain here until he returns from the Ministry.\"
Hermione nodded. \"Allright. Thank you, Madam Pomfrey.\"
The woman nodded and went off to deal with a few students who had just come in sporting a few hexes.
Ron and Harry waited until she was on the other side of the room before pouncing with their questions.
Hermione silenced them and then went through the series of events that she was comfortable with them knowing.
When she was done they were both looking a bit peaked. \"Wow Mione!\" Said Ron. \"I\'m glad you\'re okay.\"
\"Me too,\" said Harry.
They were discussing it further when Dumbledore and Snape walked into the hospital wing.
\"Ah, Miss Granger! You are looking better, my dear,\" Dumbledore said.
Snape, she noticed was not looking entirely pleased to see Ron and Harry. He looked at her and nodded slightly. Her lips turned up at the corners, knowing the man had been punished.
Dumbledore asked that Ron and Harry wait for her outside in the hallway so that he could speak to her privately.
They protested; but relented when she told them to do as he asked.
When they were gone, she let out a sigh of relief and looked at the headmaster. \"What\'s happening?\"
He smiled at her. \"Aurors will be sent out tomorrow morning to assist me in placing more wards. Also some of them will be staying at the castle to patroll after dark.\"
She nodded and looked at Snape. \"What happened, sir?\"
He sighed, \"We were right in assuming that he was not ordered to come here. He did it on his own. He was being punished before I arrived,and I assume far after I was allowed to leave.\"
She nodded. She was extremely tired. \"I think I\'d like to go to bed now.\"
\"Miss Granger, would you like some dreamless potion?\" Asked Professor Snape.
\"Yes sir, I think I would. Thank you.\"
\"I\'ll go and fetch you some then. Wait down in the entrance hall would you?\"
She nodded, and he breezed out of the hospital wing. She watched him go and Dumbledore watched her.
\"He\'s being so nice to me,\" she muttered to no one in particular.
Dumbledore smiled. \"Severus is capable of being nice, my dear.\"
She smiled back at him. \"You\'d never know.\"
He chuckled and shooed her off. \"Best not to keep him waiting.\"
She told Ron and Harry she was going down to the entrance hall to wait for Snape to give her some dreamless potion,and they insisted on going with her.
Instead of arguing,she let them play protectors and allowed them to escort her.
Snape rolled his eyes when he saw her entourage and handed her the vial of dreamless potion. \"Only about a spoonfull Miss Granger,\" he warned.
\"Thanks sir.\" She gave him a smile, and he whirled on his heel and left her and the boys standing there.
AN: Whew. Okay now I\'ve got that over with, the romance should start up in the next few chapters. I\'m gonna try and take it slow; but I am quite impatient, so I might just give it a kick in the ass. I hate waiting!
