The sky was pitch black, even at 8 o clock at night, the wind blew in menacing gusts causing the trees to shiver in the pale moonlight. Severus Snape listened to the almost silent crunch of twigs under his foot as he combed the forbidden forest for her, she was supposed to be back hours ago, the headmaster was pale with worry and his eyes held no sparkle to them. He, Minerva, and the headmaster had been searching for her for the last half hour. Dumbledore was afraid that she might not have had the energy to walk back had something unspeakable happened.
And as much as Snape would hate to admit it, he was frightened, Hermione Granger was not by any means a dense girl. She was more than capable of taking care of herself, she was brilliant and beautiful and kind, he would do anything in his power to protect her. He held back the inappropriate snort while thinking about the fact that no one would ever believe that he, Severus Snape, greasy bat of the dungeons would fall in love with the woman that was Hermione Granger, Gryffindor know-it-all.
The search was ,with grim feelings, ceased at 10 when Snape decided on a whim to walk out to Hogsmeade again, it had been previously searched many times over and they found nothing but cobblestone streets and the occasional drunk. Nevertheless Snape walked to the festive town again, searching it tiredly and finding nothing. He saw a heap of a person on the side of the road covered in dirt and when he heard a moan he merely assumed it to be a drunk or somebody of that sort, that is, until he heard a rasped ‘Professor’. He knew it was her.
She was bruised and beaten, bleeding and with a black eye to top it all off. She was covered in mud and dirt and grime and her hair was askew. She looked like a wild animal had tried to rip her to pieces, said animal would have seemed to accomplished his goal pretty thoroughly. Snape had a feeling that the alleged animal was a death eater, most likely quite few death eaters.
Her voice cracked as she spoke softly to him , “ Could you possibly reach in my pocket for me? My cloak is somewhere over there and I can’t even remain sitting.” She tried to crack a smile at him but grimaced in the pain instead. Snape practically sprinted towards her cloak and found a glass vial in her pocket, he brought it over to her slowly and she nodded to him as he lifted her chin to let her down the liquids. Once she had drank it she propped herself up and blinked several times before talking in a soft but more natural manner for herself. She stopped bleeding and most of the tiny cuts disappeared leaving some large one’s and a number of bruises left.
“Sorry Professor, usually my cloak doesn’t land 10 feet from where I’m standing after I apparate, I don’t really know how it happened in such a manner. You were all worried weren’t you? I could swear I heard you about an hour ago, but I thought it was a dream… or maybe it was.” She looked questioningly at him before calmly continuing.
“We were ambushed…or rather I was, we both were. The first time they were after me the second they were after the Minister.”
“Miss Granger, you are horribly late, why is that?”
‘stupid! That was very very very stupid! You know why she’s late, she was ambushed you fool, she was beaten to a bloody pulp lying in a state of half consciousness on the ground!’
She blinked several times before she replied carefully in a controlled voice, “Ex...excuse me?”
‘oh, now you’ve done it Snape-ol-boy, no choice but to follow through now.’
With a cold look of indifference he calmly stated, “I asked why you are late, you were to be due back at 6:22, or do you not understand time?”
“I understand time perfectly well professor”, she said icily,”I believe is it time for me to get back, so if you will just hand me my cloak there I will be going.” She stood swiftly before swaying and slumping towards the ground, she probably would have been caused a considerable amount of pain had it not been for the strong arms of her professor that caught her.
“My apologies Miss.Granger, I admit, and I will only admit this once, that I may not always fully think through what I say. I surmise that all did not go well today?”
Had she been able to snort she would have but instead all she could form was a scathing reply that her mind only would allow her to say in such a condition., “All did not go well? That would be under-emphasizing it just the tiniest bit professor.” She felt foggy suddenly, it seemed the stress that had caused her body to temporarily be out of business was starting to catch up with her head ,and she was getting a splitting headache to just top the cake. Grimacing she tried to ignore the pain but instead muttered something incoherently, she could swear she heard the professor telling her that she would be fine, though she could have been delusional.
“Miss.Granger…Miss.Granger…HERMIONE!!” He looked down at her silentlyle sle she struggled to hear him through the fog of her mind, for all she knew this was a dream.
“mmmph?”She resorted to what anyone would during a time like this, disjointed mumbling.
“What shall I tell the headmaster?” He stared at her questioningly, hoping she would be able to formulate an articulate reply.
Don’t let him see…” was all she could say before she fell into the darkness, losing all touch with reality, leaving Snape to carry an unconscious girl who wanted to hide her pain from those who loved her. They neared the school and he quickly waved his wand a few times causing most of her remaining cuts and bruises to disapeer, the black eye stayed though. He doubted that the headmaster would be so daft as to believe she came away spotless. Especially since she wasn’t even conscious to tell him what had happened.

“How did you find her Severus? How was she?” The concerned gaze of Albus Dumbledore locked with the curiously calm gaze of Professor Snape. How could he lie to this man? How could he not?
“She called out to me, she was on the side of a street, it seemed that she was exhausted, that is it.” He carefully put on a face of indifference as his gaze bore into the headmasters. He could sense Madame Pompfrey staring at him doubtingly but with a silent nod she slowly shook her head at Dumbledore, warily eyeing Snape, it seemed the future promised him a lovely chat with the wonderful nurse. How grand.
The strict nurse took this time to start to usher Albus out of the infirmary claiming that Hermione needed her sleep and that she’d see him in the morning. As she shut the door she glared frostily at Severus.
“What is the meaning of this Severus? I do not like lying to the headmaster! If you do not explain yourself this very minute I will find him and alert him that Hermione is suffering from more than exhaustion!”
Severus held up a hand to silence her before sighing heavily, “She was ambushed, she will no doubt inform the headmaster in the morning Poppy, she was badly beaten. I imagine that she did not want to burden Albus, as he is her adopted father. She asked me to hide her injuries from him, I merely honored her wishes. I healed her cuts, so don’t start on me about how wrong I was.” He arched an eyebrow at her, daring her to challenge him when Hermione cautiously sat up. She squinted her eyes and spoke delicately as she had earlier in the evening.
“ I need to speak to him immediately.”
“No dearie, you will talk to the headmaster in the morning, you need your rest now.” Poppy walked over to the cabinet and took out a vile of liquid, prepared to hand it to Hermione when she spoke up calmly.
“ I really need to talk to him, it is very important.” Hermione pleaded with her.
“NO young lady, I will not have you over exerting yourself after such a trying day! I will not be responsible for such things, now drink this.” She shot her hand out and tried to hand it to Hermione again.
“No, I will not drink that Madame. Seeing as that potion will make me sleep for more hours than I care to. I need to speak the headmaster, immediately!”

His body was drenched in sweat as he shot up from his four poster bed, he looked frantically around before he remembered that it was just a dream. Hermione was not in the infirmary, not anymore. Hermione was not lying on the side of the road bleeding, no, she was sleeping in her head girls for what would be one of the last times. She had agreed to take early Newts so that she could further help the order, he didn’t want to think about what that meant for her, especially with Voldermort becoming increasingly interested with her. If only she had been kept safe that summer.
He got up from his bed and looked at the clock, today was the day that Susan and Jim would meet again, they planned to meet 5:13 this morning. It wouldn’t be the first instance they met at unusual times, once they met at 12:12 at night, it was always interesting to think about when and where they would meet the next time.
He took a quick shower, brushed his teeth, and had a cup of tea in record time, leaving him 45 minutes to spare before they would meet in the room of requirement. He decided to get an early start and arrive earlier than he usually did.

A bright light exploded through the skies as Hermione Granger was propelled backwards into a large ditch filled with mud and thorny plants. She felt her skin being ripped with tiny gashes and her body ached from the fall. She looked around her, alarmed by the sudden attack, they had been inside, in a building, and then, the whole thing was gone. Just like that.
She jumped up, searching the sky quickly when she saw it, hovering above what used to be the building they were in. The skull, the same skull she had seen over her parents house when she came home that summer… the same skull that seemed to follow her. The deatheaters would not succeed, no, she would never let them.
She heard a sudden shriek and she saw the American minister splayed on the ground with a death eater perched over him. The minister was shrieking like a girl unmoving.
“Hello brother, have you forgotten about me? I didn’t even receive a Christmas card this year, tsk tsk, that’s no way to treat family brother.” He unexpectedly felt a wand at the back of his head and heard a livid feminine voice speak.
“The door swings both ways. I believe you should lower your wand, that is unless you prefer death, I can arrange that as well.” She waved her wand, causing the mans wand to land purposely in her outstretched hand. She pocketed the wand, speaking in almost amused tones.
“Good thing I chose for you, though I am sure the American ministry will no doubt condemn you to certain death when they arrive her in about oh… 5 seconds.” She smirked as sudden pops filled the air and the shoulders of the rough man slumped almost unnoticeably. It was the aurors from the ministry, they grabbed the minister, who seemed to have noticeably wet his pants, and dusted him off, waving there wands a couple of times. With a pop they all apparated off, leaving a very disgruntled Hermione Granger behind them.
The death eater used this moment to reach for a spare wand in his pocket, pointing it between Hermione’s eyes as he laughed menacingly.
“Seems you’ve been distracted! You know, I do so prefer you when you are vulnerable and surprised like this, it’s almost as good as watching you tied up on the ground, writhing under my touch.” She could imagine he was sneering in an almost Lucius Malfoy way, thinking himself to be so elegant, well somebody should inform him that he was nothing close to elegant.
“You are a pathetic bastard.”
He waved his wand unexpectedly causing her to fly from the ground, hitting the hard dirt once again in a painful landing. Hermione quickly jumped up, brandishing her wand again, ready to strike. He tried to curse her again but she deflected it, they went on dueling, flinging curses at each other and promptly deflecting them until Hermione in blind rage pierced the arm with a menacing scream that flinged the man backwards, with a flick of her wand he was unconscious and twitching on the ground. She smiled triumphantly, she hated death eaters with a passion, and this one was no exception. It was then, as she was casting the body bind on the man, that with a resounding ‘pop’ about 20 men in black cloaks and masks apparated, Hermione’s back stiffened and she knew that whoever it was, they were not here to help.
Before she could turn around she crumpled to the ground in agony, at least 5 men had run off to retrieve there fellow death eater but the rest, the rest stood above her laughing menacingly, casting crucio and just laughing. They talked about how they could not kill her, though they wished to, because master had said so. It made Hermione want to be sick, and as she lie there twitching spasmodically on the ground all she thought about was apparating, instead she blacked out.

Hermione Granger looked around the room alarmingly before settling down into bed again, it had been a dream, it was all a dream, well at least tonight it had. Unfortunately, nights ago it hadn’t. She looked at the clock on her nightstand, this was the morning that the secret couple would meet. So, with that for initiative, Hermione roused herself from a state of half-sleep, took a shower, brushed her teeth, and set down for a cup of tea. With forty minutes to spare she decided to walk there early, to the room of requirement that is, it would be tricky to hide in there, but she could try.
She walked through the halls peacefully, a good morning walk was just what she needed, it was something so grand after such a stuffy night. She was deep in thought that she never noticed the swift steps of the figure walking straight towards her, he himself enjoying an early morning walk.
Snape looked up just in time to see himself collide with the tiny Miss.Granger, who had not grown all that much in size since her third year. They both fell in a heap to the floor, Hermione on top of him with her head and hands on his chest. She looked horrified, but then again who wouldn’t?
That was not the exact thought of Hermione however, at this exact moment Hermione was amazed at the hard muscle she felt beneath her hands as she fell on top of him in what would have normally been a compromising position. Though no one would ever accuse Hermione ger ger and Severus Snape of performing lewd poses in a corridor without having to physically be pushed together by another.
Here sae savored this feeling for a second before jumping up exceeding fast and offering a hand to her professor who gruffly pushed himself off, scowling at Hermione.
“I thought we discussed meeting in a much better fashion than this Her- Miss.Granger?”
‘oh that was smart Severus, almost call her by her first name, she’s right there!’
“What are you doing about this early anyway?” he said, arching an eyebrow at her and crossing his arms over his chest, not expecting in any way to hear what spilled out of her mouth.
“Well, ah, you see, it’s morning sir and I…I was…I was hoping to find you! Yes, that’s it, I needed to talk to you, it’s very important.” She stated triumphantly, almost as if she needed to prove she had good reason to be out.
“Talk …to me? Pray tell why Miss.Granger.” He stood his stance, watching her facial expression discreetly.
She sighed heavily before hanging her head low and saying in the softest tone possible, “ I am coned ned about Draco.”
