What Nonsense!!

Chapter 4

What Nonsense!!

“Sir? Did you hear me? Dumbledore thinks that you might hav—“

“I heard you!!!” Snape roared. “There’s no need to repeat it”

Snape’s ears were ringing. He ran his long fingers through his sweat soaked hair. The hair at the nape of his neck was matted with dried blood. He had forgotten about his wound. Having no time to clean the scrape, he tried to cover it up with the rest of his hair. Snape was feeling feverish and all of the objects in his room began to blur together into one giant mess.

“Professor, it was…”

“Get in here! There’s no sense in you yelling through my door.”

Filch, wheezing, entered Snape’s chambers.

“You said they were rumors.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Well… who started them?”

“That’s just it Professor, I don’t know? The corridors are full of talking students. Just as I heard what was going on I was summoned by McGonagall to take you to the headmaster. It’s best we be on our way now.”

Filtch walked close behind Snape.

“I don’t need you to take me there. I know where his chambers are.” He hissed. He placed his knee high leather boots on over his pants. His black over coat was unbuttoned all the way down showing his white loose flowing shirt hanging over his pants. He looked a mess but didn’t care. His mind wouldn’t stop buzzing.

How the hell was this happening? He didn’t bloody touch her except to help. It was Hermione that was coming on to him in the first place. I bet it WAS Hermione who came up with this ridiculous story. That mudblood bitch. She was giving him payback, and it’s going to be hell.

His mind lingered on every excuse and every lie he could come up with. It was late morning and the air was sweet but Snape didn’t notice. All he could hear were his footsteps banging though his head as he made his way to the headmaster’s chambers.

What seemed like a long walk through Azkaban prison, he reached Dumbledore’s office. He placed his hand on the chilled door and licked his lips. They were very dry and still stained with blood.

“Come in, Severus.” Said a cool and calm voice from behind the door.

‘Damn it, how does he do that?’ Thought Snape annoyingly.

Snape reluctantly opened the door and walked inside. Snape was dumbfounded. Pomfrey was fidgeting with a handkerchief that was clutched in her white hands. She glared at Snape with much animosity. Then he knew.

Pomfrey was always the one to interfere in matters which were not her own. She had been curious of the situation the very minute he had brought Miss Granger into her hospital wing. Granted, the very scene of it all was very convincing. Hermione’s buttons ripped off. The blood shared on their lips. Snape growled. He didn’t like this.

Snape’s glance made its way to meet Dumbledore’s.

“Sit down, professor.” Commanded Dumbledore while he manifested a chair from mid air.

“Thank you, headmaster, but I prefer to stand. And might I ask what this meeting for? I’m sure you are well aware that I have a class that will not teach itself. And that is saying a lot, considering Neville is enrolled in that class.”

“Sit down, please, Severus.”

Snape knew that when Dumbldore used his name, he was in trouble. Snape sat down despite his own wishes to stand. Snape always preferred to stand than sit. Still a trained ex-death eater, standing allowed one to exit quickly. And at this very moment, he would rather leave swiftly than to sit and stay for what he knew would be a very bad conference, indeed.

“I’m sure Mr. Filch relayed to you my request as to why you are being summoned here. And I am quite positive this whole situation is just a misunderstanding. But being that it may, I, none the less, must still investigate this indiscretion.”

Snape was getting angry. Why won’t he just come out with it already? Hermione, not knowing the full details or her illness, squealed to Pomfey what she had believed happened, and oh yeah, he was on a one-way ticket to Azkaban.

“Well, let’s get on with this then.” Snapped Severus, directing it more toward Pomfrey than to Dumbledore.

“I will begin as soon as everyone I summoned arrives, Severus. I do not appreciate your impatience towards something as serious as this. When it comes to my students I do not take such accusations as lightly as you would. You might remember what I stated when you first entered my office. I am giving you a benefit of a doubt regarding Miss Granger, so I would be as professional and as charming as I could be, wouldn’t you say, Severus?”

Dumbledore peered from behind his half moon glasses at Snape. Snape knowing this couldn’t get much worse stared back at him in perfect silence. He would not agree with Dumbledore on this matter. He was already upset that he had to be apart of this, and now he was being lectured like he was a student. That was going too far in Snape’s book.

Just as Snape began to open his mouth to speak there was a knock on the chamber door.

“Ahh, that must be him.” Stated Dumbledore as he sat up in his chair.

The large wooden door slowly opened and in walked none other than…Harry Potter.

Snape’s mouth when dry at the very sight of him. It was all becoming clear. This was a plot against him. His head was now aching, and the whole room began to spin. Severus felt very ill had to control his urge to vomit. Bright girl, this Miss Granger. Betting she had planned this the entire time, Snape stood up.

“I don’t have time for his childish antics!” He said as he made his way to the door.

“ SEVERUS! SIT DOWN!” Bellowed Dumbledore.

Snape remained standing.

“Harry was the witness to the account which took place with Miss Granger, so I’d suggest you stay where you are and hear him out.”

Dumbledore motioned for Harry to sit.

Harry looked just about as bad as Snape did. His eyes were baggy and red and his breathing was very shallow.

“Well, Potter, come out with it.” Hissed Snape as he slowly came to stand beside Harry. Snape was very intimidating at this moment. He towered over Potter with an air of hierarchy that threatened the very testimony of Potter’s accounts.

“Headmaster, I…” Harry squeaked so quietly that only Snape heard.

“So Potter, mudblood got your tongue?”

He moved closer to Harry.

Potter glanced up to Snape. Harry was somewhat taken a back at how quietly Snape had come to be so close to him. Severus was like a snake. Silent and deadly.

“Severus, another comment like that and I will have no choice than to reprimand you.”

Snape’s lip curled and there was a slight growl that escaped his lips.

Now, Harry…how exactly did you come to conclusion of Hermione’s rape?”

Dumbledore’s expression changed. He seemed to be focusing himself on Harry so that he wouldn’t miss a word. Though he remained intent on his attention of Harry, Snape couldn’t help but think Dumbledore was also watching him.

“My class had just ended and I was making my way up to the astronomy tower when I heard Snape calling out Hermione’s name. I wasn’t meaning to spy but I was curious. When I found them…I saw…I saw…Professor Snape. He had Hermione on his lap and he was tearing the buttons off her blouse.”

Harry’s eyes began to well with tears. His eyes were peering into the cold stone floor as if he was trying to look down into the next level. He was having difficulties putting his words together.

Snape’s jaw was clenched. He felt the blood begin to trickle down the back of his neck again and wondered how he could control the bleeding without it being terribly noticeable. Slowly and discreetly he moved his hand to the back of his head. The bump that was there last night had now doubled in size. His skin was cold but he felt hot, and was now thankful he had not buttoned his robes. Wishing he hadn’t refused to sit, he tried to keep himself from swaying to the rhythm of the spinning room.

“Harry…” whispered Dumbledore. “It’s okay, please continue.

“His hand was around her waist, Professor!” He turned to Snape, Harry’s face was reddened with rage and he was convinced it would be a good idea to tell his story directly to Snape. Wrong again, Potter.

“ He was writhing against her. Then he put his hand into his pants and then…well, you can imagine!!! She was on top of him and he was forcing himself into her. He wouldn’t let her go. It looked like she was trying to flee but he held onto her wrist and her hips and…”

Harry paused and Snape stepped ever so closer to Harry. They were now so close that they could feel their breathes on each other.

“Is that what you think, Potter?” He leaned into Harry forgetting where he was and who was in the room with him. “You might be careful on your choice of words, lest you not forget who some of my friends are.” Snape spoke softly and clearly. “You know who I am talking about…death eaters…. Voldemort…”

Harry jumped up so fast it made his chair topple over. He looked at Dumbledore then back at Snape. He didn’t know what to do or say. Dumbledore in the midst of the argument had stood up and his wand was in his hand.

“Professor, I’d suggest you take your distance from Harry. Now…it would seem as if this is getting us nowhere. Madame Pomfrey, how is the child?”

“She will be out for a couple of days, at least. The remedy I gave her is meant to put her into a comma so that she may gain her strength back. Why do you ask?”

Pomfrey seemed to be the more uncomfortable to be there than anyone else. Dumbledore sensing this decided to send her on her way.

“Thank you Pomfrey. You may tend to your patients. But might I ask that you not speak a word of this to anyone until it has been investigated in more detail. Also would you be so kind as to take Harry to his dormitory.”

“On my honor as a healer, my mouth is sealed.”

On Pomfey\'s way out she gave a kind word to Potter and told him that if he need, she had something that would help him sleep through the night. She looked up at Snape as if to say something but decided against it as she hobbled her way out the door with Potter and disappeared.

There was a deafening silence. Dumbledore stared into Snape’s eyes and Snape stared into Dumbledore’s. For what seemed and eternity no one spoke. Snape then took it upon himself to defend his actions.

“Headmaster, though I hate to say it Potter is right. But only HALF right. I was trying to allow Hermione to get more air by releasing her blouse. And as my hand…well in Hermione’s desperate struggle for air she had bounced on my…myself and I had to adjust to help protect against farther damage. As for the rest, it is nonsense. I’m sure Pomfrey let you know the circumstance in which she entered my class and there for I am not responsible for her being taken ill. You can accuse me or not, but I stand firm in my rescue of Miss Granger from herself.”

Dumbledore remained silent. He seemed to be trying to read Snape. He thought it silly to try to be read. Dumbledore well knows of his talent in legilimency and to even attempt to read him would prove futile.

“I am not accusing you Severus. But under the present circumstance, as I said before I have no choice. Until Miss Granger is well and able to communicate what really happened it is left up to me to decipher the truth. But until that time comes, you must forgive me, I have to restrain you until further information has been divulged on this matter. I do hope you understand.”

“Restrain me….Headmaster?” Snape asked in a hiss.

Dumbledore didn’t speak. He knew that Snape got the jist of what was about to take place and felt no need to interpret his intentions farther.

“Restrain ME?

Just as his words were spoken, huge iron cuffs appeared around his wrists and were locked in place. Snape struggled against them but it was no use.

Having felt feverish already, this seemed to be the breaking point for his body. His head was pounding harder than it had in years and his skin seemed to seer from the heat that was rising within him. He could barely make out Dumbledore. He seemed to be speaking to him but his lips made no sound. He felt like he was being washed away into an ocean and with out warning he collapsed onto the hard cold floor in his headmaster’s office.
