Shrinking back

38. Shrinking back

“How did you know that I was pregnant?” Harry asked getting a little more comfortable.

“Do you remember the monthly tests where Dribble checked if your potions worked properly? He also performed a general examination then and routinely checked for a pregnancy. These tests are not very reliable though, therefore we had to cut our trip to Bali short- I would not take the risk of having you carry our child unsupervised.”

Harry was quiet for a while. “Are you really okay with my decision?”

Severus sighed. “I have to be,” he finally stated and when Harry wanted to reply something, he leaned down and kissed him. “No more questions,” he purred.

It was two weeks later and Harry had only told Hermione and Ron about his pregnancy, both of them very supportive. Of course Dumbledore knew as well but he refrained from voicing his opinion.

Severus was out, getting some new potion ingredients and so he had stretched out on the bed, snuggling into the sheet that smelt of his lover.

He was two month along and he felt surprisingly good, maybe a bit tired and sometimes he threw up in the mornings. As promised Severus supported his decision but these days he rarely let him alone and it had taken the whole morning to convince Severus that it was okay to go and fetch his order.

Last week he had asked Dribble if it was a boy or a girl and to his delight he had learnt that he carried a girl. Even Severus had been thrilled by these news, both agreeing that they would name her Lilly.

During that examination Dribble had said something about Harry's magic getting unstable and so he refrained from using it.

Getting a bit thirsty he rose from the bed and got himself a glass of water. On his way to the kitchen he felt a tremor cursing through his body that almost toppled him to the ground. Gripping the table he wanted to wait until it was gone when another pain , this time in his belly, shot through his body.

He tried to keep himself upright but sank to the ground curling into a tight ball. The pain did not lessen and so he tried to concentrate on breathing, praying that the baby was okay.

Another bolt of pain swept through his body but this time it started in the belly and went through the rest of his body, almost exploding in his head.

From far away he heard the front door opening, somebody called his name and then he heart steps getting closer. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Severus' face twisted with horror. And then... nothing.

When he awoke in a hospital room for the fourth time in two years he would have chuckled darkly, if he had not felt so rotten. His body was hurting everywhere and he felt it hard to move but the worst was that his head throbbed with a pulsating pain driving him crazy.

Next to his bed there was a commotion and then he heard Severus' voice, anguished.

“How am I supposed to explain it to him Albus?”

“Severus, I would have made the same decision and if I understood mediwzard Dribble correctly, there was no way to save both. It is a tragedy but in time he will understand.”

Opening his eyes Harry saw Severus sitting on a chair by the window and Dumbledore leaning against the wall.

“What happened?” he muttered feeling a little groggy.

In two steps his lover was by his bed, relief showing in his black eyes.

“Harry, thank god you are all right,” he whispered leaning down to place a gentle kiss on Harry's cheek.

Waiting for him to answer his question Harry frowned when he did not.

“Severus, what happened to the baby? Is she all right?”

Kneeling down next to the bed Severus gently cupped his cheek, his black eyes burning with despair.

“No, she is not.”

Feeling as if he had been kicked into his guts Harry felt tears brimming in his eyes.

“But, I have been doing fine,” he whispered. “I felt good most of the time.”

“It was not only your body who rejected her but your magic,” Severus said quietly. “It must have something to do with the spell Riddle threw at you.”

Now tears were slowly running down Harry's cheek, already feeling the loss dreadfully in his heart. Once again Voldemort had managed to destroy his life, even from his grave.

Severus wanted embrace him but Harry shrank back not understanding why he felt sick with the thought of Severus touching him. He saw the hurt in the elder wizard's eyes before they returned to his usual indifference.

Dumbledore cleared his throat but thankfully refrained from giving Harry a stupid remark that everything would be all right and only shortly squeezed his shoulder.

“I am so sorry for your loss,” he quietly said his blue eyes for once not twinkling. “I will give you some privacy but know that you can always approach me if you need somebody to talk. Both of you.”

After he had left Harry avoided to look into his lover's face, the feeling of loss strangely changing into anger at Severus. It was not his fault, Harry was aware of that but he had never wanted the child, all too willing to give her up and in that moment of anguish he hated him for that.

Severus rose from the ground gracefully moving into the direction of the door and without another word left, the door closing after him leaving Harry to his pain.

He curled into a ball and hid his face in the protection of his pillow.

I told you not to get too excited with Harry's pregnancy... Now I wonder if it will bring both closer together or tear them apart? Tell me what you think, will you?
