Challenge
Less than two hours after being sent to her room, Hermione was summoned to Draco’s study.
It was her first time in the room, since he always kept the door locked. And ever since her wand had been taken from her—it was the right of a veela to deprive a witch of her wand if she was deemed to be a possible ‘runaway—she had no way of entering. Not that she wanted to.
But now that she was inside she was reminded of the place he took her when he first…took advantage of her.
It made her shiver.
Even now those memories were enough to upset her. She doubted she would ever get over them.
Draco was leaning against the desk. She had a bad feeling.
‘I was thinking. It’s been hard for you, hasn’t it?’
Hermione shifted uncomfortably, now sure where he was going with this.
‘Poor Hermione. She’s had it hard.’ He smiled, and again, she felt uncomfortable. ‘She’s been forced to live with the big bad veela. Boo-hoo.’
If not for her fear of being treated in kind, she would have slapped him.
‘You think I’m evil, you hate me, and you want nothing to do with me. Fine. I have a propostion.’
She waited. This was not going to be good.
‘I’m going to let you go.’
Did she hear correctly?
There was a catch. There was no way he would just let her go.
‘I think this is a trick,’ she managed.
He shrugged, still smiling, ‘Think what you want. But I am going to send you out into the world. Go back home. Go to the Weasley’s. Do whatever you want.’ He paused, waiting for his words to sink in, ‘And I’ll give you…let’s say a month. One month. If you want to stay away, then I will let you stay away.’
She was on pins and needles.
‘I will be near, of course. I have to be. We would die. But you would be free to do whatever you want.’
She narrowed her eyes. ‘Why?’
He laughed, ‘I want you to be happy. Clearly you are not happy here.’
She didn’t believe that for a single moment. She knew that he could tell she was skeptical.
So he confessed, ‘Fine, I think that you might begin to see that maybe this situation, however inconvenient or unpleasent, is perhaps the best.’
She stared at him.
‘Fine. I accept. But if that’s the truth—and I’m not sure I entirely believe you—then don’t be surprised when I don’t come back.’
‘You sound confident. I guess you won’t be back here.’
‘No, I won’t.’ She was afraid of what he might do, but any opportunity to leave was better than nothing.
