Spell Master

Remus ran to through the empty halls and caught up with Harry. It wasn’t hard, being a werewolf he was faster than any human. He reached out and grabbed the boy by the wrist, making Harry whip around and face him.

“Leave me alone!” The boy raged, as he yanked his arm out the grasp and continued to run away.

“Harry, please!” Remus pleaded as he grabbed him again. “Please just listen to me!”

“Why? So you can tell me more lies?” Harry seethed while pushing the man away. Unknowingly, his innate power crackled around him .However, what the boy didn’t know was that the power he was unconsciously generating put an extra ‘umph’ in that shove and it sent Lupin reeling back against the wall.

“Hey! Watch it!” A Slytherin portrait griped after the DADA professor slammed against the wall. “You almost hit me!”

“Harry...” Remus coughed out, as he tried to regain some of the breath that was knocked out of him.

“No! I’m tired of listening to you! ” The boy interrupted, loudly. “I’m tired of believing in all of your lies and half truths! I’m tired of listening to your excuses and— ”

“Harry…” The man pleaded, as he balanced himself against the wall. “Please believe me, I wanted to tell you!”

“Then why *didn’t* you!?” Was the questioning and hysterical scream. Unknown to Harry, was that in his rage, his no longer-hidden power started taking on the colors of blue and green.

Lupin glanced around. Unsure of what to do next. He had never seen anything like this in his entire life.

Harry’s unique display of raw power was also gaining the attention of the portraits. Some of whom where very loyal to the pureblood cause.

Remus knew that he had to get them out of there, before one of those painted Slytherins reported this to someone who could, and would, report this to Voldemort.

“Harry, come with me.” He gently grabbed the boy’s elbow and tried to lead him somewhere more private.

But Harry wrenched his arm away and demanded. “Either you tell me now or forget it!”

“Harry, please try to understand…”

“Understand what!? Why you felt the need to lie to me, all these years?!” The boy choked out, as hurt and angry emerald eyes pierced into amber.

“Harry..”

But the boy put his hand in a stop position, to end the excuse.

Remus’s eyes widened fearfully, Not because he was afraid that he had lost his chance, though that did play a part. But mostly because a small, loosely threaded ball of energy started forming in front of Harry’s palm.

“If you ever cared for me…” Potter pleaded, solemnly, as he let his arm fall to his side. “You’ll tell me the truth now.”

“Well you heard the boy!” A female portrait exclaimed, nosily. “Tell him what he wants to know!”

“Yes, tell him! “Another heckled. “What are you afraid of, Gryffindor?”

But Remus hesitated as he glanced around at the officious portraits.

And Harry took his silence as a refusal.

“Fine! Be that way!” The boy spat out as he turned and walked away from the man he once trusted almost as much as he, once, trusted Dumbledore. “I‘ll find out from somewhere else! From one of those bastards in Slytherin!”

“Hey, we resemble that!” A portrait yelled.

“Yeah!” Another agreed.

But the boy ignored them as he stormed down the hall.

“Harry!” Lupin called out toward the retreating figure. “Do you really want to know why I didn’t tell you that Lily was a Slytherin?”

The boy spun around and faced him. He didn’t need to *say* yes. The answer was written all over his face.

Remus forced himself not to fear the angry, and powerful, wizard before him. But it was a feat.

“It was because…Because... when I first met you… in your third year..” He sighed sadly. “You *hated* Slytherins *so* much.”

“So!” Harry shot back. “I still hate them! They‘re a bunch of arse holes!”

“Well, I never!” A random portrait huffed angrily, but he was ignored by the two occupants in the hallway, as well.

“Yes…well… that’s why I didn’t tell you...” Remus admitted softly, regrettably. “I didn’t want you to hate her too.”

Harry glared. Instead of being moved into forgiveness by that statement, his eyed *glowed* a brilliant green in his fury. “Are you saying that it’s *my* fault that you let me believe lies about my own *mother*?”

Remus shook his head. “No. That’s not what I’m saying, at all.”

“Then what are you saying?” Was the heated reply.

“I’m saying that…” He sighed. “I’m... sorry.”

Harry laughed bitterly. “You know… you’re the second person who has told me that today. However, the first apology sounded more sincere.”

“Harry--”

But Harry stopped whatever Remus was going to say with an angry shake of the head. “Why didn’t you just tell me the truth? I thought you cared about me?!”

“I did! God! I do!” Lupin quickly corrected. “Harry I love you as if you’re my own son! I *didn’t* want to lie to you!”

“Then why dammit?!” Harry yelled and balled his hands into fist. “Will you at least tell me that? Tell me the *truth* just once! The *whole* truth!”

Amber eyes pinched shut with shame. “Because.... I am a coward.”

“You’re a Gryffindor.” Harry reminded bitterly. His tone clearly stated that he believed Lupin to be a liar, once again.

“The ability to be selflessly brave doesn’t mean....” Remus shook his head and took a shuddering breath. He didn’t know how to explain. Moreover, he didn’t want to try and make an excuse for his actions. For his lies. Bowing his head until his bangs shaded, and hid his eyes, Lupin tried to hide his shame, but his actions did nothing to mask the tears which trickled down his cheek.

“Ever since... I got bitten...” He rubbed his hand and a faded scar. It was in the shape of a bite, and it was almost invisible to the naked eye. However, it was the scar which would forever remind him of his lupine curse. His exile from humanity. “I just wanted to be normal. I wanted to...belong. Sometimes... I want it so much...I go along with things that I don’t agree with... because...I‘m afraid.”

“Afraid of what?” The question was ask more gently this time. “That they would tell your secret?”

Remus shook his head no. “I am afraid… to be alone.”

Harry looked at the man in front of him. He was angry, but not as angry as he was a second ago. It was almost bitterly ironic that the man in front of him longed to be human, while Draco felt that being mistaken for one was an insult to his person.

Nevertheless, Harry knew what it felt like to “bend with the wind” just to survive. It was what he had been doing for the last few years. Moreover, Harry knew that Remus cared for him. Really cared and would never *purposely* hurt him.

But dammit, he *still* hurt him!!

The lies hurt a 100x worse, than the truth ever would. Because it was a lie about his *mother.* Finding out the truth now, just proved that he never knew her and would *never* know her. Because now, all the images he had created about her, and her personality, were no more real than the images he created when he was a child, living in the cupboard under the stairs. And now, he doubted *all* the stories which were ever told to him, because, now, he doesn‘t know what‘s the truth from a lie.

And it hurt dammit!

It hurt a lot!

Because these LIES were told to him by the people he trusted the MOST. And if they lied about his own parents, then what else have they lied to him about?

It hurt so damn much because *Slytherins*, the lying, cheating bastards, were the ones who told him the TRUTH.

Harry wanted to be angry with them too. The Slytherins. Draco. And Snape. He wanted to hate them, for they all knew about his Slytherin legacy. But....

He couldn’t.

Because really, why would they share it with him. Harry certainly gave them no reason to. He was hateful to them from the beginning.

But it wasn’t really his fault.

He was taught to hate them. Taught by the noble Gryffindors, to hate Slytherins, since practically the same day he learned of the wizarding world. Yes, he was taught to hate, by the people he trusted the most. Gryffindors who were supposedly too noble to lie, deceive, for pre-judge but actually wrote the book when it came to hypocrisy.

Harry, wasn’t sure what to believe anymore, and he wondered if it was all some sort of elaborate plan to keep him *out* Slytherin.

So he wouldn’t find out the truth.

Now, Harry wondered what else he was tricked into not knowing.

It was a never ending cycle of hurt.

“Remus…” The boy choked out, though his eyes were still narrowed with distrust.

The man looked up and was happy, and surprised, to see that the boy’s aura of power had disappeared. He had an inkling of an idea to what it was, but only because he knew James’s parents. But it really made no sense that Harry would be able to summon it… But… he decided to worry about it later. “Yes, Harry?”

“Will you please tell me about my mother? Will you tell me the truth?”

The brown haired man looked at the boy gratefully. Harry was giving him another chance. “I’ll tell you everything I know.”

“Good or bad?” He wanted to make sure.

Lupin nodded as he wiped away a tear with the back of his hand. “Good or bad....but..I want you to know that... I didn’t know her all that well.”

Harry looked skeptical.

Remus sighed. “I mean... your father didn’t start dating her until the end of their sixth year.” He gave the boy in front of him a sheepish and apologetic closed-lipped grin. “She wouldn’t even give him the time of day before then. She thought he was a jerk.” He softened that bit of truth with a loving wink.

A few years ago, after Harry had found out how cruel his own father was, Lupin tried to explain it away. Tried to make excuses for his father’s and Sirius’ actions, so he wouldn’t think poorly of them. But the truth was out, and no matter what Remus said, Harry couldn’t forget the truth.

“Yeah... but you were still friends right?” Harry prodded after he banished that memory.

Lupin nodded then shrugged as he sheepishly scratched the back of his head “Yeah... but you know… I was your *father’s* friend.... And Lily and I were friends by association.” He gave Harry a pleading look. As if he was trying to will the boy to understand his plight. Unfortunately, it wasn’t working, so he pressed on with his explanation. “It’s like if Ron, I mean…I mean Neville. You’re his friend right?”

“Yes.” Harry agreed readily as he tried to hide the hurt at that little slip-of-the- tongue.

Remus gave an apologetic smile before he continued. “But he’s dating Zabini right?”

“Yeah, but still...” The boy interrupted, even though he knew where Lupin was going with his explanation.

“She was a Slytherin, Harry.” Remus stressed, regrettably and looked even more apologetic.

“But...”

“And by that time...things had changed within the Marauders. You know, after the *incident* with Snape, Sirius and I had a serious falling out....” He trailed off hoping that Harry would catch the hint.

Harry silently remembered Draco telling him about Lupin’s and Black’s relationship and how it ended because Remus had a crush on Snape, and Sirius trying to punish them both with the “prank.”

“And after that year…” Lupin continued. “Your father changed...For the better, I might add.” He gave a proud smile and tried to comfort Harry by putting a hand on his shoulder. “He spent most of his time with your mom, …and Sirius...You know...since they were the closest within the Marauders and a year ahead of me...”

Harry shut his mind off from the memory of Sirius moaning out his father’s name. He didn’t even want to speculate how close they were. Harry sighed dismally. “Friends through association...Yeah… I get it now.”

“And then they went into hiding soon after leaving Hogwarts…I’m so sorry, Harry.”

“Me too.” The boy sighed woefully, then asked hopefully. “Do you at least have any pictures, letters or anything?”

The man shook his head. “I’m sorry. But...the Marauders were specifically targeted by Death Eaters.” Remus always wondered if that was due to Severus’s and Lucius’s hate for them or because of Peter‘s. “Our homes were destroyed in the war. All but Siruis’s, but that was only because his parents were in allegiance with the Dark Lord.”

“So there’s nothing…” Harry murmured. His shoulder’s sagged as if they carried the woe’s of the entire world.

“I’m sorry.” He truly was.

The two walked out of the Trophy Hall, in silence, with Lupin leading because he was the only one who knew the way out.

Right before they reached the exit, Remus put his arm around the boy’s shoulder and tried to make amends. “I’ll still tell you anything you want to know about your dad. Good or bad, I promise.”

“Thanks.” Harry gave the man a wan smile, but in truth, he didn’t want to hear fanciful stories about how they used to harass unfortunate and unsuspecting students. He had been a victim too long to find any joy in hearing it. In his opinion, Dumbledore should have stopped them. Punished them for their antics, long before the episode with Snape. Because maybe if discipline was enforced *before* the “pranks” got out of hand then…maybe things would not have turned out so dreadful for everyone involved.

Remus’s thoughts turned inward as he chewed on his bottom lip. He stopped in his tracks once he remembered something. “You know….” He smiled brightly at Harry. “I know who would know a lot about your mother!”

At this, Potter perked up but fiercely warned “If you say Dumbledore, I’m going to hex you.” It was a very disrespectful thing to say, to not only an adult but a teacher as well, but he meant it. With every fiber of his being, he meant it.

Remus chuckled nervously and shook his head no. “I was thinking more about Pagan. He probably knows her better than anyone.”

“Pagan?” Harry asked as his brow pinched in confusion.

“Yeah…” “Lupin smiled out. “On our last day as students, your father even convinced us into trying to steal him from the school.” When Harry’s eyes widened in alarm, he quickly added. “As a present to your mom… They were practically best friends, you know? Talked all the time.”

“Pagan’s *here*?” Harry asked excitedly, while pointing at ground, yet meaning something much more vast. His head whipped around as if the person or thing was in sight.

Remus nodded. “The bastard hexed us for our efforts, too.” He laughed at the memory. “Who knew a guardian, could do that, but...he *is* as old as the school. Older probably. So I guess he would know a few tricks.”

“Where?” Harry begged excitedly. “Where is he?”

Unfortunately, this was where Remus sobered up. “He guards Malfoy’s chambers.”

Harry choked. “What?”

“The snake... which guards Malfoy’s chambers…” Remus explained. “The one who sits on that ghastly dagger. It has guarded all Head Persons chambers...I think it’s a kind of a tradition, of sorts. I think it belonged to Salazar himself.”

“But it’s a snake!” Harry asked, really confused now. “How could she speak to him? I mean, of course, *she* could speak to him, but why would she...It’s not like she could understand what he said back to her! ”

Lupin shifted his gaze away from the boy and admitted softly. “She could.”

“Could what?”

“Understand him.” Remus shyly admitted. Then summoned up his courage and clarified himself even more. “She was a parselmouth too, Harry.”

“W…wh.. WHAT!”

Lupin bit his lip, unsure if he should go on.

“But...but...but I always thought that I could speak parseltounge because of Voldemort.” He implored. His tone begging for the truth “I thought this was part of my curse?!?”

The man shuddered at the name, but shook his head in shame. “I’m sorry… I let you believe that.... I would have told you sooner but...” He shook his head, for he wasn’t going to make any excuse. “I’m sorry.”

“So she was a parselmouth too!” Harry said flabbergasted. Happily flabbergasted. This knowledge made him feel closer to her. It made him want to speak the language all the time. Who cared if everyone else thought it was evil. Fuck them! Fuck them all! His mom was a parselmouth too! He inherited this gift from her, not Voldemort.

“If it makes you feel better…” Lupin said timidly and unaware of Harry’s inner rejoicing. “You’re mom..she didn’t call herself a parselmouth... She called herself an apple eater.”

Harry looked confused but also happy. “Apple Eater... Why?”

“After Eve. You know... She spoke to the snake and ate the fruit of knowledge. So perhaps Eve was a parselmouth too.” He shrugged because he was just speculating. His assumption had no solid fact to prove it.

“Oh.” Harry laughed. He wondered why he had never thought of that. It would have saved him a lot of grief about thinking it was some kind of evil tongue. “So Pagan knows her?”

“Yes, he does. ” Lupin nodded eagerly. “I remember your father saying that it discovered she could speak the language in her 2nd year..He said, she told him that it used to follow her all the time before it spoke to her…. Like he was trying to figure something out.” ” Remus shrugged. “So…Well, you know… they became good friends. It even became a confidant even.”

“But Pagan’s a racist!” Harry clarified. His short discussion with the creature was enough to prove that. “He can’t stand muggleborns. Why would he even take the time to notice her?”

Remus shrugged. “Maybe it’s because parselmouths are so few and far between. Or maybe it’s because she was one of the few muggleborns sorted into Slytherin..” Remus shrugged again. “Or maybe it just felt like making an exception. I don’t know, Harry.”

“So you think it will tell me about her?” The boy asked eagerly. Hopefully.

“It’s worth a shot.” He gave Harry an encouraging wink and squeeze. “It’s supposed to be honored bound to the Head Person, though, but I sort of remember Lily mentioning that it was a bit of a blabbermouth and a gossip monger when it could find someone to talk too. So who knows… Maybe he’ll be so glad to find another who speaks his language that he’ll bend the rules for you. I mean, he did it for her.” He clapped Harry on the shoulder and encouraged. “Either way, it’s worth a shot, isn’t it? The worst he can say is no. ”

Harry nodded in agreement and smiled happily.

This day turned out to be a total emotional roller coaster. But it was turning out to be a damn good day.

Well, at least for him it was.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A.N. Ahhh finally this day is OVER! It only took what…a whole lot of chapters? ^_~
Things are going to speed up! In the furture I have things I want to cover but time is going to move ~forward~ Skipping a few weeks. And such
zaspan (asleep), umren (dead), Macedonian
Magija (black magic)
Okay, I know you’re probably wondering how in the world are they going to defeat the Dark Lord now? With Harry being under the Curse.
Well I’ll tell you what I have discovered in my life. There is no “I” in team and there is *no* such thing as an army of ONE. But don’t worry, Harry will be an integral part of the defeat. However, it takes a lot cooperation, and many people, to scheme, manipulate, and do amoral things to overthrow a tyrant like Voldemort.
And well….
That’s what Slytherins do best ^_~
Never forget. The Sorting Hat said that by any means necessary they will accomplish their goal.
And you will see that ~everyone~ has their own agenda. But the same goal. ^_~ And that is to get rid of Voldemort.
So Draco is growing up. But don’t fear, he is not this all-knowing, all-powerful super wizard. You could propably tell that already though, Yes, he is extremely powerful, and extremely smart, but he is also *young* and he has no idea what the hell he is doing. I love him though.
And as vengeful as he maybe, and he is VENGEFUL, make no doubt about that, he is also *very* innocent because he has been sheltered his whole life. Remember he is the Dark Master who doesn’t even know the killing curse ^_~ LOL
He needs Harry’s wisdom. Just as Harry needs his innocence.
Harry’s very powerful too! But he’s not all powerful either. Though he is more powerful than most, but like Draco I’m not going to make him some Super Wizard. His powers have It more to do with his family and what they *are* You’ll understand more when I talk more about Slytherins and there magical bloodlines. ^_~
Sooooo sorry about the delay in this chapter. Life is kicking my ARSE!!! I hope you enjoyed the read, though.
I’ve been so busy lately, I figure I better force myself to do something fun before I have a nervous breakdown.
Writing his my therapy.
God knows I need it.
Oh I left ~all kinds~ of hints in this chapter. I hope you saw some. ^____^ I had a hard time writing this chapter so I hope you enjoyed it!!
Please review if you can. I ~really~ want to know what you think of my fic. Your input helps me write better. Thank you.
Lots of love
